Ambush

I pulled Jing Tian away, ignoring the rude curses coming from behind me.1

We took the car to come here. When we arrived, we told the drivers to go back because we realized the distance wasn't that far. We would walk home.

The stone paths on the island were very simple. It looked quite retro.

It was quite pleasant to walk around with my boyfriend on my arm.

Mai Qi clicked her tongue. "Wasn't that just spectacular?"

Jing Tian touched my head apologetically. "You were scared, weren't you? I'm sorry."

He had accompanied me here because he was worried about me. I didn't expect that things would turn out like this.

"You were here to help me but how come it felt like I've saved you instead?" I asked.

Jing Tian smiled helplessly. "Because you did. I have to surrender myself to repay you for saving my life. I'll give myself to you."

I like hearing this.

Jing Ni sighed. "Seventh uncle, when did you turn into someone like this? You're giving me goosebumps."

I was proud of myself.

Mai Qi patted Mr. Tong Le. "Did you hear that? Watch and learn!"

Mr. Tong Le gave us a sidelong glance. "He is just coaxing her. Once he gets her, he won't be so gentle anymore! Every man is like that!"

Mai Qi asked, "Then, how come you never once coaxed me?"

Tong Le blurted out, "I never have the need to!"

"Tong Le!" Mai Qi stopped in her tracks and stared at Mr. Tong Le with her round eyes.

Jing Tian, Jing Ni, and I couldn't help but laugh.

Mr. Tong Le ran to Maggie's side in small steps. "I meant I'm not one of those men who have to rely on these sweet talks."

"So, you mean you're not a man?" Mai Qi pressed.

Mr. Tong Le was displeased. "Hey! How can you scold me like that? Do you want me to prove to you what kind of a man I am? Hmm?"

Mai Qi's face turned red with anger. She raised her fist and punched him. "What nonsense are you talking about?"

Tong Le grimaced. "Jing Tian, this is all your fault. Why did you need to start spreading dogfood for no reason?!"

Jing Tian hugged me and turned around. "Ignore him. He's crazy!"

I pulled at Jing Ni with a smile.

"Get down!" The sound of Tong Le's scream came from behind me.

Before I could react, Jing Tian pushed me to the ground.

The gunshot rang in my ears.

I was about to raise my head when Jing Tian pressed me down. His hand was so strong that I couldn't break free at all.

"Nanxing, don't move!" His voice was very steady, which gave me a bad premonition.

"Tong Le, do you have a weapon?" Jing Tian asked.

"No! I'm here to meet my in-laws. Why would I bring that? What's wrong with you? What's going on?" Tong Le countered.

While they were talking, we had already gotten up from the rain of bullets and hid in the entrance of a narrow alley. My little uncle was with Mai Qi, and Jing Ni was with us.

Jing Tian shielded us behind him. He looked out cautiously.

"I don't recognize these people. Are they your enemy?" Jing Tian asked.

My little uncle was speechless, "Why can't they be your enemy?"

A series of bullets hit the wall opposite us. There were holes in the wall, and dust filled the air.

Jing Ni and I started coughing due to the dust.

Jing Tian buried my head in front of his chest and patted my back. Then he pushed Jing Ni and me further into the alley. "Hide carefully and don't come out."

After saying that, he got up two stones from the ground and bent down to move outside. "Tong Le, eight o'clock!"

Then Mai Qi was pushed over to our side.

"You three, stay here!" Tong Le warned, and the two of them rushed out.
