C51 Chapter 51
My hands were shaking and my heart was throbbing faster. The sweat had flooded my back and temple. Their glare sent fright to my brain. With a bit of courage, I swallowed the fear that had risen to my throat.
The tallest man with a pistol in his hand and sneer on his face scared me by lifting that deadly gun to the air. Shortly, he hauled Kevin's collar and thrust the muzzle of the pistol on his forehead, then shooting me with an ominous look. That boy surrendered under the man's threat.
"So, you want to know how to finish one's life with one shot?" That ruthless tattooed man demonstrated his arrogance.
"Please, it won't bring any pride even you killed that spoiled boy many times. He is just a truant, lazy, and stupid boy." Kevin's eyes rounded. He did not expect that I threw such words. "I bet your life would be full of bad luck if you are around him." His anger might have been exploded out if only he was not in the worst situation.
"Do you think your nonsense can affect me?"
"It definitely can if you listen to my next information."
"Don't try to instigate me, little girl! Ha ha ha..."
"He suffers an infectious disease. Nobody at school has a gut just to be near him. His illness was not only contagious but also lethal." My explanation made all those men stared at me in bewilderment. Only Kevin fired me with a furious gaze. The big man with curly shoulder-length hair who clamped Kevin's hands released his grip. In an instant, Kevin snatched the pistol from the man and wrapped his hand around the neck of the man closed to him. With agility, he imposed that gun on his head with his forefinger on its trigger. With his gutsy and towering body, that skinny guy was powerless in Kevin's arm-twist.
"Leave! Otherwise, he will die," he declared.
"You can't bluff me, boy!" He was still pursuing to control the situation.
"All of you get lost if you want your friend alive!" Kevin snarled.
"Take it easy...put the gun down because you don't even know how to fire." That man with a mustache calmed Kevin down.
"Should I inform you that I took a shooting class when I was just twelve years old?"
"Don't fool me, boy. You don't have an idea about how to hold the gun properly."
"Do you want me to demonstrate my shooting skill? I'll do it right away."
"No...Please, Charlie let him go. I have a family. I want to live longer." The man with his body in Kevin's arm begged.
"Alright, you may be safe this time but, I will always hunt you. And you girl, if we meet again, I promise that you won't witness the sunrise and the sunset again. Let's go." Kevin shoved the man. They all took their steps away yet in a flash, the tallest one who seemed their leader swiveled back.
"Kevin, watch out!" Realizing that he was in danger, Kevin hasted toward me and grabbed my hand with him. We ran away from them who were trying to chase us. I escaped again.
"Don't ever look back when you are running from something." Reno's face flashed in my mind. It was Reno, the one who said that sentence under the moonlight that night on our way to Mrs. Ali's house. Why did my heart pulse every time his name emerged on my head? Why did his shadow stay even when he physically had gone away? He might live somewhere. But, we probably would not see each other again. It was better, isn't it?
"I think we're already safe now." Kevin let my hand go of his clasp. He was breathing. And he finally managed to settle himself. In a hurry, he walked closer to the big trash bin and put the pistol into it after ensuring the area was clear. "How can you be so powerful? How do you get that power?" We rushed our pace and glanced back once in a while.
"I have run in my whole life," I blurt out
"It's no wonder that you can run that far even though you are a girl," he commented. "Why did you help me? I have ruined your life, embarrassing you both in the real and cyber world." He referred to what he did to me in the library. That memory stabbed my heart like a knife every time it popped up on my mind.
"I did it spontaneously. There is something in me that triggered me to do so. What’s done is done.” I comforted myself. “After all, keeping the bad things in your remembrance will only fill your life with pains. I have to forgive those who have hurt me not for their sake, but my benefit."
Not a single word slid out of his lips. He might contemplate something in his silence. I chose to shut my mouth up as well. We drowned in our own world for a moment.
"Ilana..." Kevin suddenly pulled my body into his arm and twirl to the other side so that my body pressed against the wall of a narrow hidden place in one side of the passageway. He was safeguarding me. Those goons were still chasing us.
"Where do those kids go? They are too agile like squirrels," remarked one of the criminals.
"I think it’s that way! Let's get that way'" another man instructed.
Their voice had vanished along with the wind that blew. We were still in our position; Kevin's right hand was still on my waist, while the other cupped my head, protecting it from the crash with the wall. I could hear Kevin's heartbeat, his perfume, and the aroma of his breath. We were too close. Kevin's eyes locked mine for a moment before finally, he jerked his body away.
"They have disappeared," he said after scanning around
"Why do they ambush and have an urge to kill you?" I asked hesitantly. It was none of my business. However, I got myself involved since the first time deciding to intervene.
They were the people who have kidnapped Reno and me when we were children. My father imprisoned them. They were trying to take a revenge." He paused. 'I'm sorry." I knew well what he meant. "I don't know how to compensate for all the bad things you have experienced because of me. You are right that I don't deserve your forgiveness." Gilt was seen vividly in his eyes. Yet, could I trust him this time after all that he had done? He had ever jabbed me, would he do the same thing next time?0
"I have buried my past," I muttered.
"Would you be my friend?" His question left me with a surprise. Before an answer was uttered, a jeep stopped. Two tall and manly figures in black jackets got off from the car. I could read Kevin's uncomfortable expression. Those men were different from those who picked Reno up that night. I was worried they were not Mr. Wijaya's men
