C64 Chapter 64

"Eva...." Someone shrieked at the girl whose foot still set on my book. Surprised, she turned around to see Angeline who had been there a few meters at the back. I cleaned the book from the dirt. I was wondering why Angeline stood for me this time. I knew the answer after I glanced back. Kevin idly existed with his hands in his pants' pockets. "Let her go. Can't you hear me?"0

"It seems suspicious that you even snap at me just because of her," Eva grumbled when they had stood face to face. Her eyebrows arched. "Has Angeline, the bully changed now?" She scrutinized around. "Kevin is the reason why you do this, right?" She spoke in a very low tone.

"I don't care what you are going to think of me."

I walked past those girls, Eva and Angeline. I did not let myself get involved with them. Galloping, I arrived in the classroom before having another class. Angeline and Kevin got to the classroom five minutes later. Angeline confidently requested Kevin's partner to move to another chair so that she could sit beside him. That curly-haired boy did what Angeline asked him to do. She looked annoyed when Kevin avoided her by taking a seat at the back row not long after that. That girl stared at me with a threatening face. I did not know why she always threw all her hate at me. The way Kevin treated her had nothing to do with me.

Getting rid of Angeline out of my mind, I put all my focus on the lessons during the classes, to pass the exam and reach my goal. Studying and reading in the library apart from the classroom were my activities a few weeks later. I avoided whoever distracting my attention. So, the only places I went to were the classroom and library.

We would face a state exam in one month. All students were busy preparing for that event. Even Angeline and her gangs did not have time to bully me. I spent more time at school, joining additional classes, or studying in the library with Vera. Those who had more money took classes outside of school or paid for the teacher to teach them at home.

The day came. It was a pounding moment for all third graders. This examination was the most important part of my life. If I could not make it this year, I had to retake the exam next year. That would only leave me with long-suffering. If it was not Angeline who turned my life into hell in this school, Eva and her gangs would do that to me. She was still in the second grade now. Whatever it took, passing this exam was something I could not compromise. It was a must.

The test had started an hour ago and would end an hour later. I rechecked the sheet and reassured that all questions had been answered correctly. Before the supervisor said five minutes left, I proceeded toward the supervisor's desk and put my answer sheet there. I let out of relief as the questions were not that difficult.

The exam lasted for three days; it might not take so long. However, these three days measured our capacity whether or not we could graduate from senior high school. Vera treated me lunch in the canteen to do a small celebration for we had been through the challenging days. She nudged a brochure to me after she ordered the food for us. I thought it was her bulletin program or what. My heart was filled with excitement as soon as I read what it was about. It was the information about the Government Scholarship for an undergraduate degree. This information was like the door for me to get to the next stage of education. Studying at the university was something I never imagined before. And today Vera brought the good news that I had long dreamed of. It would probably become reality. I could imagine how thrilled my mother was, if I told her this.

"You should apply for this. This is a full-scholarship. So, you don't have to think about the fee. What you have to do now, study hard to prepare for the test. And I know you can do it. I am very optimistic." Vera's words were so convincing and supportive.

"I will. I will surely take this opportunity," I said convincingly. "Thank God," I whispered.

"Great! I'll be supporting you. So, have you decided on the major and the university?"

"Not yet." I got confused when it came to talking about a major or university. I was not good at any field.

"Here are the lists of universities and the majors they offered that you can take a look at." Vera showed me other papers, not a brochure, just printouts. She printed the lists for me.

"Thank you. I will read this at home and soon tell you what major I am going to take," I concluded.

"Yes. Take your time."

"Hi, girls...guess what? I have been accepted in one of the UK's universities." Angeline announced openly with her big voice that all the canteen visitors could hear. Her friends clapped their hands, cheering on her.

"Congratulations, Angeline. I know you are the most intelligent student." The student in ponytails commented. Angeline was always in the top ten in this school. Her accomplishments were awesome, being selected for students' exchange, winning many competitions. Not only she had a good record in academic but she was also great in the sport. She was a swimming athlete. It was undoubtedly that she was easily accepted in universities with her achievement.

"Thank you, Sara. Guys, you can eat and drink anything you want and I'll pay for that," she declared. The students excitedly ordered whatever they wanted. The canteen became full of students in few minutes.

We left the canteen after Vera paid for the bill. The situation got more crowded. It made us uncomfortable. We had to pass the narrow path since the students stood here and there, not even giving us space to proceed out.

"Excuse me," I muttered. That girl gave me space that I could cut through.

"Ups....sorry..." Angelina spilled her food on my skirt. I immediately ran out toward the toilet to clean it. But, her foot slid mine. I stumbled and it stimulated others to laugh at me. Vera swiftly helped me get up.

"I can't believe that Angeline, the most favorite intelligent student in this school did the things only done by stupid students. If it is possible, I suggest the university revoke their decision to accept you on their campus," Vera said provokingly. Angelina was going to slap her yet she did not manage to do that, Vera caught her hand. "You are nothing, just a parasite." That blonde girl had an urge to explode out her wrath. Hand clapping thundered the room. And Kevin walked confidently while clapping his hand.

"Wow...what's this? I never thought that you are finally defeated," he sneered. That girl could not stay any longer. She and her gang paced out of the canteen.

"Let's go from here Ilana!" I followed Vera. Before I reached the door, Kevin's hands caught mine.

"Where are you going? Don't you need to thank me?"
