18 I Am His Weakness

I quickly adjusted my mood and began to study the news about the Dragon Scale.

Two days later, I began to see a pattern. Almost every news had a word that was repeated from another one. Some of these words are about time and place, some about the size and color of the Dragon Scale, and some even about the name, occupation, and age of the speaker.

I remembered that I had read a book about arithmetic in ancient Rome. When we have 10 letters, we can arrange an infinite number of words theoretically. That is, someone made up some words and then put them together into hundreds of fake messages.

So, as long as I can find the message that doesn't contain the repetition, that's the real message.

I asked the servant to bring a large piece of paper and spread it on the floor. I leaned over the paper and wrote down each message with a pen. When I see the same word, I put a false sign after it to indicate that it is a false message.

Gradually, there were more and more false signs on the paper, which meant I was getting closer and closer to the right answer.

The sun went down and the candles in the house lit up. I was so caught up in the wordplay that I forgot to eat.

“What are you doing?” Nuri stood in the doorway and watched me write on a large piece of paper.

“I found a way. Look,” I explained excitedly.

He raised an eyebrow at my words. Although he didn't praise me, I saw the affirmation in his eyes.

“Let me help you,” he said, taking off his shoes and working with me on the news.

Fake news, fake news, other fake news...

Late at night, we finally eliminated all the wrong answers and found the only correct message.

“The Dark Valley,” Nuri repeated the correct message.

I remembered. Meggie once told the story of the Dark Valley. The Dark Valley is also known as the Death Valley, and it is said that none of those who entered the valley ever made it out. Legend has it that it is a place full of bones, where vampire bats and Vipers live.

Just as I was about to speak, Nuri looked me in the eye. “I will go there tomorrow with Roth to look for the Dragon Scale. You will wait for me at home.”

“But it's too slow. If I go there with you, I can tell right away whether the Dragon Scale is real or not.”

“There is no room for negotiation,” Nuri said stubbornly.

“All right.” I pouted.

“You did a great job today. I didn't know you were so smart. I can give you a promise, except to go to the Dark Valley.”

I seldom hear Nuri praise me. I felt a sense of accomplishment. “I don't know what I want yet. Can you keep that promise? When I have something I want to do, I'll find you.”

“Yes. You deserve it.”

I hugged him happily. This is the happiest I've been in 18 years. I solved a problem with my wisdom and got praise. I am a valuable person, not a princess who can only be forced to marry.

“Well, my princess. It's late at night. If we don't get some sleep, I'll be sleepy and eaten by vampire bats tomorrow.”

“You're not going to get eaten. You're a hero.”

Nuri smiled. He carried me to bed and tucked me in. “Okay, I'm your hero. I'll only be eaten by you, not by anything else, okay?”

What's he talking about?

The next morning, Nuri took some knights to the dark valley, while Manolo, Wayde, and I stayed in the garden and waited for their news.

In order not to alarm the vampire bats, they can only take a few knights into the valley. If they are in danger, we need to back them up on time.

“Don't worry,” Manolo told me. “I tied Nuri's hair to a Linking Paper Man. If he's in danger, we'll know right away.”

“Are you talking about the Linking Paper Man?” I was surprised.

I've only read about Linking Paper Man in books. The wizard soaked a special paper in a magic potion, cut it into human shapes, and tied a person's hair so that there was a link between them. When the owner of the hair is injured, the corresponding part of the paper man will show the wound.

Manolo opens a box and a yellow paper man lies in it. A strand of Nuri's hair was wrapped around his foot. “You see, the Linking Paper Man is still intact, which proves that Nuri is not in danger.”

I nodded, but my heart still felt uneasy, as if something bad was about to happen.

God, I hope I'm just nervous.

Wayde looked at the paper man with surprise. “Manolo is the only person on the entire continent who can make Linking Paper Man, except the witches.”

But Wayde laments, “If only the head witch were still here. Then you could inherit all the witchcraft of the witches.”

“Why? Manolo's not a witch,” I wondered.

Manolo pursed his lips and lowered his eyes.

Wayde explains: “Forty years ago, the leader of the mermaid clan, the grandfather of Manolo, and the head of the witch clan, made a marriage contract before they died. They promised that their grandson and granddaughter would marry.”

I asked curiously, “Manolo is the groom, so where is the bride?”

“No Bride,” Manolo said sadly. “The present chief witch has been missing for almost 20 years, and no one knows if she has a daughter.”

Wayde sighed. “If the present chief witch could get married and have children, her daughter would be the bride of Manolo. It would be a great power if the mermaids and witches were to unite. What a pity.”

Manolo, regaining his gentleness and warmth, “I have always valued what fate has brought me. If God's will is for me to have no bride, then I accept it without complaint.”

I smiled at Manolo. “God won't be so heartless. You are such a wonderful person, God will make a beautiful bride for you.”

“Really?” Manolo looked at me.

“Of course it's true.” I smiled and gave him a small pep talk.

I had just finished this sentence when the Paper Man in the box suddenly moved, and there was a blood-like fluid in the place of the man's heart.

“What's going on?” I suddenly got scared.

“Nuri is in danger.”

Wayde picked up the saber. “I'll take some men to back him up.”

Manolo whistles and a huge white-feathered eagle hovers in the sky and lands on Manolo's arm.

Manolo takes out a white arrow. The eagle put it in its mouth and then, with another whistle, it flew away.

“This is an arrow made from a vampire's leg bone. It can be used against vampire bats. Don't worry, Nuri has the Vulcan Bow. He won't lose.”

Fear was like an invisible hand around my throat. I felt like I couldn't even breathe.

Nuri, my hero, how could he be hurt?

I paced back and forth restlessly in the garden, praying to God, “Oh God, please keep my husband safe, I would give anything.” 2

After a long time, there was a noise at the door. A group of knights in broken armor, smelling of blood, came in carrying a tall man.

“Out of the way! Out of the way!” Shouted the knight standing in front.

“What's going on?” I ran up.

Oh, Nuri gritted his teeth, frowning in pain.

There was blood running from under his armor.

My lips quivered and I could not speak.

“You're the princess the Royal Family married to atone for their sins? Get out of Here!” A knight shouted at me.

“Don't be rude,” Wayde said sternly. “She's Mrs. Rodriguez. If you don't respect her, you don't respect Sir Rodriguez.”

The Knight was silent.

Wayde quickly instructed the knights, “You put Knight Rodriguez in the bedroom. You guard the yard. Manolo, Roth, and Mrs. Rodriguez, please come with me to the bedroom.”

……

“What the hell is going on?” Wayde asked Roth as soon as we entered the bedroom, while Manolo and I examined Nuri's wounds.

“We could have won,” Roth said indignantly. “But vampire bats release a kind of hallucinogenic fog. Knight Rodriguez stood in front of us to protect us. He inhaled the gas, and in his hallucinations, he called out the princess's name, and then he was hit by the Bat King's poison needle.”

Roth glared at me.

Did Nuri get shot because he saw me in the vision?

Oh, God. Why?

Why am I his weakness?
