19 The Past Reappears

Nuri’s POV

I felt as if I had fallen into an abyss.

The darkness around me. I was standing in the middle of a dark sea. The water was calm, not a ripple in it. The sky seemed to wrap everything around it, and some green fluorescent stars hung in the sky like twinkling eyes on a black canvas.

“Who are you?” I shouted into the air, holding the Vulcan Bow in my hand.

I must find the Dragon Scale quickly. Sibyl is waiting for me at home.

“Ha Ha Ha Ha, you guess who I am?” A burst of strange laughter sounded. The green stars suddenly turned into bloodshot eyes.

“Oh, Nuri Rodriguez, the hero of the mainland. Let's play a game.”

The voice was androgynous, like that of a blood-sucking monster who had lived in a cave for a long time.

“I'm not in the mood to play any silly games with you.” I drew my Vulcan Bow and aimed it at one of the eyes.

The eye I was aiming at immediately closed, but the other eyes seemed more active.

“Oh, no, no, no. Knight Nuri Rodriguez. You can't kill me. I have many eyes, and you only have one chance. If you choose the right eye, you will leave here. On the contrary, if you make the wrong choice, you will be stuck here forever.”

“Your vision will not last long. I will kill you.”

“Oh, don't say such terrible things. My vision has something you like best. You'll love it.”

The sound died away. An eye in the sky grows large, my reflection disappears into his pupil, and his eye becomes a battlefield image.

“Dad...” I was surprised to see the man struggling to kill the enemy. He is the tall father that I remember.

My father was wounded. His arm was bleeding, but he kept on gritting his teeth and killing one enemy after another with his sword.

“My warriors, the King's reinforcements will be here soon. Please hold on a little longer,” my father shouted, comforting his man.

I clenched my fists. I knew my father couldn't wait for reinforcements any longer. His king betrayed him.

My brother has just come of age. He went to war with my father, excited to be the next hero.

But now, with his armor broken and 10 enemies surrounding him, he was too exhausted to deal with them.

A high-ranking knight from the enemy approached my brother from behind. He raised his sword at my brother's back.

That's where the heart is.

“Watch out!” My father lunged at his son, exposing his own back to the enemy.

“Dad!” My brother shouted desperately. He held my father in one hand and his sword in the other against the attacking enemy.

“Dad, I'll take you home.” My always strong brother is crying.

My chest heaved with anger. I gritted my teeth and tried to calm myself down.

The enemy's sword pierced my father's body and entered my brother's heart. He and my father embraced and died.

They fought to the last minute and they didn't flinch.

I have spent countless sleepless nights thinking about what my father and brother were like at the end of their lives. I think they must have been very brave to defend the honor of the Rodriguez family with their blood.

I can't imagine their despair and pain before they die. But today I saw it.

“Nuri, calm down. This is an illusion, this is not real.” My mind told me this was just a vision and that the monster was trying to confuse me.

In war, a knight cannot lose control of his temper no matter what happens to him. To lose control means to show weakness.

That's what my father taught me.

I closed my eyes and took a few deep breaths. My hand, which held the Vulcan bow, was veined with force.

I can't be impulsive.

I only have one chance.

The second eye got bigger, too, and I saw my dying mother in it. She lay on the bed, holding my hand. As she wept, she said, “Nuri, you must remember, your father was a hero. From the day I met him, he was a man who put loyalty and honor before life. He's a great father, too. He's always been there for us. He loves us.”

I knelt before my mother, “I know, mom.”

My mother was so weak that she lay in bed and closed her eyes. Her tears had run out so that her eyes were bleeding. “Nuri, I have never regretted marrying your father. I'm sorry, but I'm going to heaven to be with your father and brother. You have to live your life. I'm sorry, my son. If God hears my prayer, we will be family in the next life.”

My mother stopped breathing. A month after my father and brother died, my mother left me.

These were things that happened five years ago. I have gone from being the son of a hero to an orphan.

No, I'm not an orphan. I have my grandmother.

Another eye grew larger, its pupil showing the funeral of my family.

The funeral was grand. Residents of the capital lit a white candle at the door to mourn my father and thank him for keeping the country safe. It was dusk, and the candlelight of the whole city formed a long path of light.

According to legend, the spirit of a dead man would return to the place where he once lived at night to bid farewell to those he knew.

Father, mother, brother, look, the city is bright enough at night that you won't get lost tonight.

I knelt in front of the funeral hall and said the last goodbye to my family.

My grandmother came to me, and she held me in her arms, just like she did when I was little. “You can cry, my child.”

I buried my head in her arms and wept silently.

“Nuri, grandma is here. Grandma is always with you.”

I only have my grandmother. If it weren't for her, I can't imagine how I would have spent that time 5 years ago.

I looked at the memories from five years ago, and the pain overwhelmed me again.

The eyes in the sky are getting bigger. They fill the sky, making the already strange sky even more frightening. Each eye plays a past event.

In one eye, I saw the Queen 5 years ago. She was looking up at a girl kneeling under the steps.

"Why do you think our royal family should raise a princess born of a concubine like you?"

"You are just girls born to lowly women. Your existence is a mistake. Do you really think you are a princess? Do you think I let you live in the palace as a princess out of kindness?"

"Now it's your turn, the so-called princess, to repay the emperor and me."

"The king of the Werebear country needs a concubine."

"You know, our country is at war with them. As a princess, you need to take your responsibilities."

The girl's eyes were full of fear. She had been begging the queen, but she was scolded.

I know she is the princess who was forced to marry a werebear 5 years ago. A princess is forced to make sacrifices for her country. 0

Suddenly, I found a little girl covering her mouth in horror behind a curtain in a corner of the palace.

It was Sibyl five years ago. She was only a 13-year-old girl, but she saw how her royal family would sacrifice a princess.

Oh, Sibyl, is this how the Queen forced you to marry me?

Don't be afraid, Sibyl.

Just as I reached out to touch Sibyl's 13-year-old face, the sight disappeared.

An eye rolled in front of me. I saw the king, who had not been ill five years before, throwing a fit. “I ordered the people to put out all the candles tonight. What are they doing? Are they honoring the Rodriguez family? Do they want to challenge the throne? A knight is only a knight. I am the Emperor. They can only light candles for royalty, not knights.”

All the candles went out that night. Under pressure from the royal family, people are afraid to talk about my father in public.

My father and my brother gave their lives for their country. But their king forbade the people to mourn them.

How Pathetic!

I closed my eyes and didn't let the images cloud my judgment. Every eye is a memory or a story. I have to find that key eye and shoot it to get out of here.

I have to calm down.

“Nuri.” A gentle woman's voice.

I opened my eyes and Sibyl stood in front of me.

She was not an image in those giant eyes, but a person standing in front of me.
