35 Brother-in-law

Nuri’s POV

Every time I come to the palace, everyone is agitated.

I stood in the hospital of the palace, slowly turning over the medical books in my hands.

The house was very quiet, only birds and insects could be heard.

The doctors were kneeling on the floor. Cold sweat was dripping from their foreheads and some of the cowards were already shivering a little.

Nothing scares people more than inscrutable silence.

I put down the book in my hand and asked casually, “I heard someone was sick yesterday?”

The doctors looked at each other, not knowing who I was talking about.

An old doctor cleared his throat and replied carefully, “We received several calls yesterday. Most of the doctors were on duty at His Majesty's Palace. The queen called other doctors because of a headache...”

The Queen?

I sneer. The queen is always “sick” at the right time.

“Weren't there any doctors here yesterday?” I asked.

The doctor paused and replied, “There was a doctor here yesterday for an emergency.”

“Who?” I glanced at the doctors in front of me.

“Me,” a young doctor replied in a trembling voice. “I was on duty here yesterday. I'm sorry, Sir, I was wrong.”

I glanced at him. “Tell me what you did wrong.”

The doctor was so frightened that he almost fell to the ground. “I. . . I. . .”

Well, he doesn't know that.

“Did you know Prince Doyle was ill yesterday?” My voice was calm and showed no emotion.

Nobody answered me.

“He was almost dead yesterday.” I looked at them. They kept their heads down, avoiding my eyes.

I pointed to the oldest doctor and asked him, “Do you think it is your duty, as doctors in the service of the royal family, to treat him?”

“We... We...” the doctor couldn't read my mind and didn't know how to answer me.

The young doctor on duty yesterday suddenly interjected, “Prince Doyle has been weak since birth. He is often ill, and it is natural that he should die from some minor ailment.”

The Doctor looked at me with a flattering smile. If I nodded, he was ready to let Doyle die in an unobtrusive manner.

In everyone's eyes, I was probably the one who wanted Doyle dead the most.

I walked up to him step by step. There was a gleam of excitement in his eyes.

I put my hands around his neck and his face turned red from breathing. His face was full of surprise and confusion, his eyes were bloodshot and he struggled to get more air.

“Please, please leave him alone, Sir Rodriguez,” the old doctor pleaded.

“Sir, if you kill in the palace, you'll cause a lot of trouble,” Wayde whispered in my ear.

My sanity returned. Yes, Wayde is right. I can punish a doctor in the palace, but I can't kill a doctor. There is a big difference.

I let him go before he suffocated to death. He fell to the ground, breathing heavily.

“Listen,” I shouted in a cold voice, “Prince Doyle fell ill yesterday, and none of you are willing to treat him. If this happens again in the future, I will not let you off. I need Prince Doyle to be safe. This is my order. Do you understand?”

“I see,” said the doctors, their heads bowed.

I took one look at them and left the hospital with a cold grunt.

……

To tell the truth, I don't know what Doyle looks like. As a weak underage prince, I didn't think he was a threat, so I never paid attention to him.

I promised Sibyl that I'd help him last night, so I decided to meet him.

I was led to his house by a servant.

I frowned when I entered his room. This humble little room is the Crown Prince's house? It's not even as good as my servant's bedroom.

Did Sibyl used to live in a house like this?

I went into the bedroom and heard a laugh.

Manolo is playing a game with a boy.

The boy is thin and has a lovely smile.

I let out a deliberate cough to remind them that I was coming.

Manolo's face became tense when he saw me. He stood up and blocked my way to keep me away from Doyle. “He was sick yesterday and he's recovering.”

“I know.”

Manolo lowered his voice. “He's just a kid. Sibyl will be sad if you hurt him.”

I sneer. Everyone thinks I want to hurt Doyle. I pushed Manolo aside and walked over to Doyle.

Doyle doesn't know me. He looks up at me with his big eyes.

His eyes are as pretty as Sibyl's.

He looked weaker because of his illness. His cheeks were red and his lips a little pale.

Boys like him are destined to be laughed at in our country. The boy wanted to be healthy and strong, to ride horses and shoot arrows, but he was as weak as a girl.

“Who are you?” He sounded like a girl, too.

“I'm Nuri Rodriguez.”

He gave me a big smile, “You are my brother-in-law, the hero!”

The word brother-in-law pleases me.

“I'm sorry I worried you, but I'm getting better,” Doyle said, looking into my eyes with joy.

I wasn't worried about him, but I didn't want to say anything to upset him, so I simply nodded.

Manolo comes over and rubs his hair. “You have to exercise and be strong, or your sister will worry about you every time you get sick.”

Sister? Did Sibyl stay with Manolo yesterday to take care of Doyle? 0

“You were here yesterday?” I looked at Manolo.

“Yes, yesterday Sibyl was crying in the rain and I met her,” Manolo said calmly to me.

But my heart became restless.

When my wife was at her most helpless, it was other men who helped her.

And I don't like it when he calls my wife by name.

“I want to be as strong as you.” Doyle looks at me admiringly.

“Then don't stay in the room all the time. Boys should ride in the sun.” I looked around the dark room. The light and air were not conducive to a patient's recovery.

I patted him on the shoulder. “Come with me to the horse farm.”

“Really?” He was so happy that he almost jumped up.

“Get your coat on, quickly.”

My patience was limited, and a few minutes later I carried him to my horse.

He is lighter than I thought.

We soon arrived at the stable.

“I'll take you to the track for a ride.” I carried him to my horse.

Doyle was nervous and excited. He was as afraid of horseback riding as Sibyl, but he gritted his teeth to make no noise.

I taught him the basics of horseback riding at the track. I can't imagine that a 10-year-old boy can't ride a horse yet.

The king doesn't care about his son at all.

“Hold the reins, grab the horse's belly between your legs, and try to steer the horse,” I instructed him.

His face was red with sweat, but he listened to me carefully and with great concentration.

“Doyle!” Sibyl hurried to the horse farm. He was relieved to see us.

“How are you feeling?” Sibyl wiped Doyle's sweat. “Take a rest. Don't be too tired.”

There's sweat on my forehead, too, but Sibyl doesn't seem to see it.

“Boys need exercise.” I patted the horse hard on the body. The horse began to run.

“Doyle can't ride.” Sibyl tried to stop the horse.

“He's learning now,” I told Sibyl. “If you don't let him practice, he'll never learn it.”

“But --” Sibyl is like an anxious mother.

“I've chosen the most docile horse, don't worry,” I said.

Sibyl looked at me with a worried look on her face.

“I have reprimanded the doctors today. Doyle will be safe in the palace.”

“Thank you,” Sibyl looked at me and wiped the sweat from my forehead with a handkerchief.

I smelled her and looked at Doyle on horseback, shouting at him, “Take the reins and remember what I taught you.”

Doyle wobbled on the horse's back and gradually gained control of its speed.

He shouted at us, “I did it.”

His happiness was so obvious.

Sibyl waved to him happily.

I breathed a sigh of relief. This morning, I was wondering how to treat the prince, but now I feel he is just a child.

He's Sibyl's brother. For Sibyl's sake, I can accept him.

A year ago, I never thought I'd marry a princess and teach a prince how to ride a horse. My life has changed a lot since I married Sibyl.

More importantly, I am aware of them and willing to make these changes.
