Wen He scowled at him. Under Gu Jinzhi's encouraging gaze, she replied slowly, "I am just worried for him."

She had to see him with her own eyes to believe that he was truly safe.

"As for whether he will acknowledge my feelings is his own business and none of mine."

Gu Jinzhi rested his head on one hand and crossed his legs like a dandy millionaire, belying the gears moving inside his head.

He teased gently, "How touching. Huo Chen doesn't want you, and yet you want to go to him despite the dangers in the road ahead. Shall I give you a war flag before you enter battle?"

Her sentimental mood was gone. Wen He narrowed her eyes and laughed good-naturedly.

"What about you? You know exactly how dangerous it is and yet you chose to follow me. Gu Jinzhi, honestly speaking, are you my secret admirer?"

Gu Jinzhi coughed midway through his drink .

Luckily, Wen He moved fast enough to avoid getting wet. She eyed him with ridicule.

The man simply pulled a face and looked like he was greatly offended by her suggestion. He did not even deign to reply to her.

Satisfied, Wen He pulled out her eye mask and said, "Enough talking, I'm catching some shut-eye."

The scoundrel had to be treated like one, or he would push her buttons even more.

Wen He was keen to get some rest and she fell asleep very quickly.

By the time she woke up, they had arrived in South City.

They alighted the plane and were greeted by a car waiting for them.

Wen He was pleased by the arrangements and thought it was a great idea for bringing Gu Jinzhi along.

If she had come here by herself, there would be a lot more hassle.

Gu Jinzhi seemed to have noticed her thoughts. He took a side glance at her and looked utterly pleased with himself as well.

"Now you know what I am good for, right?"

"It's the only thing you are good for," Wen He replied with characteristic sarcasm.

After a few hours of driving, the scenery outside grew wild and desolate.

Gu Jinzhi studied their surroundings and said, "We are now at the defense front line. Another two hours and we will be able to see the border. Huo Chen's army should be camped there, but we will be passing through many customs stations and lookout posts before you see him."

"I see."

Wen He felt anxiety creeping onto her. After a long silence, she looked at Gu Jinzhi with unusual gravity.

"Gu Jinzhi?"

"Hmm?"

"You should go back."

Wen He sounded resolute. "I am very grateful that you sent me all the way here, but the front line is a very dangerous place. I'm not even sure if I will survive this, much less keep you safe. Besides, there is really no reason for you to be dragged down with me."

"You're right."

Gu Jinzhi stared into her eyes for a few moments before saying, "Here it comes."

"What?"

Before Gu Jinzhi could explain himself, a bullet hit the rear windshield with a loud thud.

Fortunately, their 4WD was specially modified to navigate uneven terrain and survive bullets and shells.

The rear windshield spotted a shallow scratch but was otherwise fully intact.

"What's that?!" Wen He was taken by surprise. "This is still Z Country territory, why are the enemies here?"

Even as she was speaking, men dressed like locals came out from both sides of the roads, armed with guns.

They aimed at their car's tyres and started shooting.
