Bow to the King
Rui Fei's heartbeat accelerated as he stared down at those slender fingers interlocked with his from under the table. When he was a child he had always thought of this very scene and even dreamt of it countless times but like a wisp of light hidden within the darkness, he knew it was just an illusion. 2
In that cold place, he imagined his body being embraced in a soothing warmth by a faceless person. He imagined himself calling out mum softly while expressing his grievances. His mother would kiss his forehead and whisper, "It's okay. Mum is here with you."
But in the end, he would open his eyes and find that it was only just a dream. The day Ji Yao opened the door to the dungeon and freed him he had a different kind of yearning.
He knew he could never receive maternal warmth and that his mother would never be able to save him but he could also get a different kind of warmth from that person who came to his rescue. Thus his yearning for Ji Yao blossomed.
From that day onwards he pursued Ji Yao relentlessly and he was extremely possessive of him as though afraid someone would rob him of his light. For a moment he didn't even think of his mother as his heart and soul were set on Ji Yao. If it weren't for his uncle he might have forgotten her entirely as a coping mechanism.
Now that she was here holding his hand he felt the emotions he had as a kid sprung up again. Like raging waters restrained by a dam wall, his emotions gushed forth as the wall crumbled. He swallowed down his emotions relieving the sting in his eyes.
"Ah-..... Ah-Fei," she whispered prompting Rui Fei to raise his head. When he saw her face his emotions burst forth and the dam wall collapsed completely. His lips quivered involuntarily and he lowered his head again with his fingers clutching his robe tightly.
Ji Yao could feel his change of emotions from across the table. Anxious and a little ill at ease he made a move like he was about to get up but Qilin Hao pulled him back. His eyes bloodshot he reluctantly turned his face to look at her.
Qilin Hao lightly massaged his arm and whispered, "Don't interfere. Let him handle it his own way." Ji Yao knew she was right but it was easier said than done. He sat there clenching his fists with his emotions clearly written on his face.
"I am sorry to interrupt this emotional reunion. It is beautiful and all but we have a very important matter to address," said one of the Qilin elders who had been fairly nervous ever since Ji Yao became their clan leader slash King of the Nocru.
"Speaking of that.... since His Majesty is the rightful King of all Nocru shouldn't all of you be bowing down," said one of the Qilin elders only for the Huishe to counterattack.
"Nocru never bow to anyone," said one of the Huishe warriors standing tall with pride. Who could blame him for saying this when he grew up being taught that in his clan.
Huishe Nan glared at his clan warrior causing him to wilt like a plucked spinach leaf left in the sun to dry. "Except before the King," he corrected in a dry tone. The concept of being ruled by a king in the future had been scrapped by the Huishe clan hence conversations like these never happened.
"Yes, but even he hasn't acknowledged his position as King so technically we aren't violating any laws," said the Kunpeng clan leader resulting in the entire main hall breaking into a conversation. The entire crowd was in an uproar causing a ruckus.
Ji Yao who was hungry and couldn't give a rat's arse right now about being king or not got up. A loud slashing sound of a whip sword being cracked in the air releasing blazing flames above their heads followed and the room descended into silence.
Ji Yao wasn't only hungry, he was also hangry and moody because he couldn't sit next to Rui Fei so yes, he grabbed his mother's sword and shut them up. "Let's eat first," he said as he sat back down with a stern overbearing expression that had the others terrified out of their minds.
When the blaze swept past them they felt like the flames were seeping into their aetherial veins and searing through to their cores. Goosebumps appeared on their skins as layers of cold sweat formed on their backs. That was a hair raising experience.
Ji Yao returned Qilin Hao's sword. She sheathed it her expression still that of shock. The fact that her son had used her sword was something deemed impossible.
Don't get her wrong, Ji Yao could swing her sword but in truth, he shouldn't be able to inject his seraphic energy into it.
That meant it shouldn't be able to extend into a whip sword nor should it accept his Qilin flame. Likewise, Qilin Hao couldn't do that with Ji Yao's sword but right now he just did exactly that.
To say she was surprised would be an understatement. She was shaken to the core in astonishment. Ji Yao didn't seem to notice the unusual look on her face. He just focused on the food that was being served on the table. After a night of being tossed around on the bed and a day of messing around with Rui Fei he was so hungry, he could eat an entire cow-like Huishe Shushi said.
While a large feast was being set up in the main hall, Qilin Kai who had been hiding in the deserted buildings of the imperial city finally snuck into the imperial palace. After seeing the way Ji Yao whipped his uncle that day he was both delighted and scared.
Delighted because his uncle finally got his just deserves, scared because he could be next and punished by association. Thus he had to get his family out of the imperial city and find a place to restart their lives.
He skillfully manoeuvred his way through the halls and passageways. In less than ten minutes he arrived at the door he had been looking for and checked the coast before opening it with a click.
Surprisingly it wasn't guarded nor was it locked. Thinking it was because he had told his parents to run away with Tong Tong he closed the door behind him and attempted to seek them out with his seraphic energy. In the past few days, he had tried to do just that but he always felt their presence in the imperial palace.
Now that he was here in an empty room his heart couldn't help but feel unease. 'Maybe they have really left,' he thought as he engaged his aether to sense their location. But before he could even send forth his seraphic energy his body was suddenly slammed by someone to the ground.
