Ji Yao's gaze shifted back to the bowl in front of him before saying, "You weren't excessive but if you cared for my feelings you should have listened to me. I guess I shouldn't have expected much considering you left me alone since the day I was born."

Qilin Hao's hand holding the pair of chopsticks paused her heart twisting painfully but she didn't dare look at him. "Do you want to talk about this right now?"

Ji Yao didn't reply immediately as though carefully considering her question. He always wanted to ask this question but when he had the chance he was dealing with the pain of losing Rui Fei so he never asked. Now that they unknowingly started this conversation he wasn't willing to let it go.

"If not now then when?" he replied with his fingers rubbing the handle of his porcelain spoon playfully.

Qilin Hao sighed as she sat up straight. This conversation was necessary but the timing was a little off. Since Ji Yao was ready to talk she could only accept it and spill it.

"I, I left because your grandfather tried to kill you while I was pregnant. He tormented my aether and if it was to shatter I wouldn't be able to keep you. Those deep caves were set up like that because it was the only place he couldn't reach me while I was pregnant...," she said recalling the nightmares she had as her aether was constantly burnt by her father's eternal flames. Countless times she had woken up fearing to find blood in between her legs and finding out there was no life in her womb.

Her fingers trembled slightly so she clenched her fist to stop it. "When I held you in my arms for the first time I remember you holding on to my finger with your tiny hand refusing to let go," she said as a radiant smile appeared on her face before it froze abruptly, "I also didn't want to let go but... that night my aether was cracked down at the middle with a little of my seraphic energy seeping out. Your grandfather truly intended to kill me that day but I fought back even though it wasn't enough to prevent further damage."

"That's when he told me that since you were born and contained his blood as his descended I wasn't needed anymore. Once he kills me he would torment you and make you do his bidding. If I died then his attacks would be directed to you?"

"I initially planned on accepting death and living out the rest of my days taking care of the both of you before I died but..... once he said that I knew death was no longer an option. I promised to get him the keystones and moved to a place he couldn't get to me."

Qilin Hao fell into silence for a while as though trying to calm down the emotions threatening to spill over. After a minute or two of calming down, she said, "I took your father away back then because I wanted to stop the both of you from looking for the keystones as I didn't want either of you to be involved in such but... who would have thought I would only push you towards it."

"Now that things were like this I could only leave my lair and find you. Because I grew up knowing the Huishe are the enemy I didn't hesitate to fight him. My protective instincts kicked in and..... I disregarded your feelings and hit him. I know I am a terrible mother and I don't expect you to understand but one thing is for certain..... I love you and I will do anything for you."

When she said this her gaze was fixed on Ji Yao's side profile. She had a shitty father and her mother was deceased hence she lacked a good role model of what a parent should act like. But she loved her son and could only show her love for him the way she understood it. Her son could blame her, scold her or even hate her but one thing she wanted him to know was that she loved him.

Ji Yao didn't speak for a very long time with his fingers still rubbing the porcelain spoon. He didn't know what to think nor did he know how to respond. He knew his mother loved him and that was the only thing he was certain of but he wished she could have raised him. Yes, circumstances didn't permit it but that didn't stop him from hoping.

He was about to respond to her and tell her he understood when he heard light snoring coming from his shoulder. His father who had been lying comfortably on his shoulder had passed out cold. It turns out that the serpent's kiss finally kicked in.

"Well, you finally achieved your goal. He is dead drunk. *Sigh..... it seems tonight I am not going to get any rest. I better drink some elixir to boost my energy," she said while looking for something in her storage ring.

Ji Yao's brow arched with a look of confusion. What could his father possibly do when drunk such that his mother would need an elixir to boost her energy. He scrutinized her for a second and his eyes widened when he realised her meaning.

What else could it be but drunk sex? Ji Wen would transform from an Autobot to a Decepticon, from Optimus Prime to Megatron. In other words, his good-guy facade would fall apart and he would turn into a villain in bed. In essence, he would fuck her senseless until she was worn out. That version of Ji Wen would do it anywhere in their room. The bed was basically for decoration when he was drunk.

"Too much information," complained Ji Yao.

"What?..... I didn't say anything," she replied before downing the contents of the crystal bottle.

Ji Yao gulped down the liquor left in Ji Wen's cup hoping to forget her words. As he tilted his head back he felt a heated gaze boring into his skin so he slammed the cup on the table and looked in that direction.

They locked gazes, Rui Fei's intense amber eyes boring through him. Rui Fei's finger tapped the table thrice and Ji Yao understood he wanted him to do something. Rui Fei leisurely rested his back on the backrest of the chair and signalled with his eyes to go outside.

Ji Yao lightly bit the inside of his cheek as his eyes indicated to the person resting on his shoulder. Rui Fei's eyes lowered like he was pouting. Picking his lover over his father he tried to get up only for the door in the main hall to be slammed open with a bang.....

It seemed trouble had found its way over.
