The two year deal

The lady dressed in all white walked around him with a gaze as though studying a strange phenomenon that is Rui Fei. When the Celestial in charge of this plain failed to do his duty and caused the entire system to fail she was called upon as the fixer.1

Why her? It was because her methods were unconventional but fairly effective that she was called upon. Unlike the council of Celestials, she had a better grasp of the situation. It's not that the Lord of the Celestials in this plain failed his duty. It's just that he was dealing with people stubborn in nature.

For instance, if he were to kill Ji Yao the moment he awakened as king then Rui Fei and the Qilin wouldn't take it lying down. Based on his personality and the power harboured in his body Rui Fei would completely blacken and slaughter senselessly.

With the backing of the Huishe clan and a Huishe mother, he would undoubtedly make things difficult and the end result will be distraction. This pair was the key to the collapse or success of this plain. 

Forced to pick between the two, Lord Tiāntǐ chose the most plausible but difficult path. He chose for the worlds to flourish.

The only problem was that the union of this pair and unification of the two worlds had attracted something sinister. Thus she was here to fix everything.

After studying him carefully she lay sideways on her chaise again and said, "You two are complicating this unnecessarily..... Most people would grieve properly if their loved ones die but you two. You two seek the distraction of the entire world just because you lost someone. Isn't that a bit selfish?"

"Yes sure, you haven't done that exactly but according to our various predictions eliminating either of you brings the same results over and over again... Since you are the least sensible of the two I had to speak to you so we can come to some sort of agreement. If you are willing to have a civilised conversation then nod your head."

Rui Fei could barely make sense of this conversation but he could only nod his head to agree otherwise he would be stuck frozen in place and won't be able to speak up for Ji Yao.

A satisfied smile showed up on her face as she stared at her pearl white fingernails. With a soft thud, Rui Fei's body collapsed to the floor as the force restraining him abruptly let go of him.

His mind in a haze he clenched his fist tightly trying to clear the fog in his eyes. The pain from his fingers digging into his skin made him regain a moment of clarity. He raised his head his chest heaving before saying, "What is it that you want?" in a hoarse voice as blood trickled from the corner of his eye.

"You two decided to join these two worlds because you want to be together, right? Sure you have justified your decision by saying that there are families split on either side of the world but I know why you are really doing this. Like I said you are both extremely selfish and self-centred. It's not about what's best for everyone but what best suits the two of you."

Rui Fei clenched his jaw tightly hearing this but he wasn't perturbed in the slightest. Given the same options, he would make the same decision. All he wanted was to be with his lover and be able to protect him. Everything else was secondary.

"So now that we are here..... I thought it would be important to let you know that your actions have attracted a nasty being that feeds on the essence of worlds. It waits until the worlds have reached their peak amount of essence then it slowly devours it and everything in it restoring balance."

"Now it will come for you.... it will come for the both of you. The outcome is inevitable but..... I can buy you some time," she said as she raised her eyes to look at him.

Rui Fei sensed her gaze so he raised his head to look at her. After staring at each other wordlessly for a second she leaned her upper body forward with her elbows resting on her thighs.

"Should I be grateful for that," asked Rui Fei with the corner of his lips quirked up with a sneer.

The smile on the woman's face froze for a second thoughts unknown. With a raised brow she straightened her back and said,

"Yes, in fact, you should. That's because I am giving you the opportunity to enjoy your short-lived happiness a little longer."

"When the devourer comes no one can stop it. Two worlds will be paying the price for the decision you made. If it weren't because I need a powerful figure like Ji Yao I would have killed you both right now!"

By the end of that sentence, she had completely lost her composure. Based on her reaction after throwing such a fit she had never lost her composure before. She exhaled deeply while reorganizing her thoughts.

"It's rather too late for me to kill you. The domino pieces have been laid out and the first piece has fallen..... the rest will fall one after the other. The devourer isn't omnipotent it can be defeated. It will put each and every one of you in a dream like state as it slowly sucks the life out of you."

Rui Fei lowered his head thoughts unknown but his chin was suddenly raised by that woman before she let him go. "You have a way out. One of you has to be able to overcome that dream state and bring everyone out of it..... then kill the devourer while it's in its feeding state."

"The devourer is something us Celestials had to deal with. It's just a mindless creature that gets attracted to the world with high-grade essence so it consumes them to its heart's content killing innocent lives."

"But now that it's attracted to your world then it gives us the opportunity to get rid of it. That is why I can't just eliminate you or your boyfriend."

"Husband.....," whispered Rui Fei but she didn't seem to hear him.

A little vexed she tilted her head to the side and asked, "Sorry, what did you say?"

Rui Fei stared straight at her and repeated his words, "Husband..... he is my husband."

She moved backwards her expression that of fascination.

"Fine.... that is why I can't just eliminate you or your husband. Just remember if you fail then you and your husband will be done for. I will buy you one..... no two, I will buy you two years. Spend these two years with your lover maybe that would motivate either of you enough when the devourer puts you in a dream like state."

After a moment of silence, she asked, "Are we in agreement?"

Rui Fei who had very little choice nodded his head in consensus. He was certain that no matter what that devourer puts them through he would be able to succeed and defeat it. He was willing to do anything to be with Ji Yao. If he defeats the devourer then they could be together and spend the rest of their lives in peace.

"Yes," he said exhaling a long breath in exhaustion.

The celestial smiled before saying, "Then we have a deal. Be sure to tell your husband that you have two years. Spend them wisely."

After saying this she snapped her fingers and the white walls collapsed revealing the tragedy that is reality. Ji Yao was no longer being attacked but whatever he was doing to split the curtain between the two worlds it was almost killing him.

Frightened half to death Rui Fei got up and ran towards him but before he could reach him the energy Ji Yao was generating pushed him backwards. He was like a laser drill violently digging through the earth as though trying to rip the planet apart.

The amount of energy he was producing was taking an extreme toll on his body but the person himself wasn't aware of it. He was at a point where he wouldn't stop until he achieves his goal.

Rui Fei who had been pushed away by that powerful force couldn't give up easily. He got up again and rushed forth but like before he was swept back again. This cycle of getting back up only to be pushed back to the ground again continued several times.

After failing so many times Rui Fei decided to transform into his true form and force Ji Yao out of his trance. He gathered all his strength and stood up again while engaging his aether. With his energy flowing through his aetherial veins, he transformed to his true form and rushed in Ji Yao's direction.

This time he got closer than before.

But just as he was about to reach the circle of eternal flames a massive explosion pushed him back as the veil that was separating two worlds together ripped apart with dust rising high up in the sky.

Ji Yao had done it. He had finally unified the two worlds as one but he had also sealed their fate. The fate for both worlds.
