The Calm Before The Storm

"Wake up, everyone! We'll get to the other side soon..." I informed the group, trailing off when my eyes landed on a trio of sleeping beauties in the back of the Humvee. Shifting my gaze and looking up, they instead set their sights on Saya's legs, which were in front of my face as I turned my head back to look at them.2

Chuckling to myself, I refocused my attention back onto the path ahead, which was mostly just water at the moment. I needed to wait for the proper time and place for... that.

Fortunately, it slowly began to change as we all got closer to land.

Parking the Humvee, I got out and walked to the front, which is where Kohta was holding a couple firearms in his hands. My eyes quickly focused on the longbow he was carrying as well.

"Thanks for holding onto it for me." I said before Kohta handed over the weapon with a smile. "Sure thing, man. Honestly, I was kind of shocked when you told me that you knew how to use one of those. It's just that... you don't really look like the kind of person that would in the first place."

Raising an eyebrow in curiosity, I was confused by what he meant. "What do you mean?"

Sheepishly fiddling with his glasses, the big guy released an awkward laugh. "I didn't mean anything by it if that's what you're wondering. What I meant to say is, you're fucking jacked and can probably beat up anyone in our school pretty easily, at least before they turned into freakish monsters that is. You seem more like the type to just grab a wooden stake and recklessly jump into a group of vampires or something... God, I'm probably not even making any sense right now."

I set a gentle hand on his shoulder, which immediately stopped the beginning of his non-coherent rambling. "No, that actually made a lot of sense, in my opinion. I understand exactly what you mean by that. I actually kind of agree with you, but the impulsive route isn't always the best decision to take, especially when there's the option of taking them out from a safe distance. It's good to learn new things every now and again."

That seemed to settle his nerves as he arranged all of the guns on the hood of the Humvee just as the girls caught our attention. "I brought my girlfriend's clothes so pick the ones you like!" Shizuka giggled, which caused the others to cheer as they all flocked towards her in excitement.

"... What's the matter?" Rei asked, somewhat concerned as to why I was acting strangely. Internally, the brunette hoped that there wasn't anything she had done to upset me. Fortunately, my girlfriend had nothing to worry about on her end.

Shrugging my shoulders, I motioned towards our surroundings as the two of us sat on top of the Humvee that Shizuka was now driving down an empty street. "Nothing, really. It's just that I've noticed a difference compared to yesterday when it came to the presence of military. The city just feels a lot less chaotic right now, you know?"

There was a clear understanding between the two of us as she quickly nodded. "Yeah, I know what you mean. I didn't really want to say anything, though, just to prevent it somehow jinxing us or something."

That's when it decided to ruin the tranquil moment.

Kohta, who had been using a pair of binoculars to survey the land as we traveled along the desolate roads, suddenly exclaimed in an urgent tone of voice that immediately caught the group's attention.

"We're approaching a bunch of undead! They're about 300 meters away!"

Breathing out a sigh of resignation, I analyzed the situation with a stoic facial expression as the Humvee began turning corners at a dangerously high speed. Rei and I held onto the roof for dear life, struggling to stay in place as the Humvee constantly swung from side to side in an attempt to avoid areas that were packed full of zombies, which would increase the risk of possibly getting ourselves stuck in the middle of a horde.

When there was one way forward left, the only option was to start going through them, which is what Shizuka did with the Humvee. However, I quickly grew alarmed once my eyes landed on the wire that was blocking us from going any further up ahead.

"STOP THE CAR!" I yelled, hoping that at least someone inside of the Humvee actually heard me trying to get them to press on the brakes.

Fortunately, Saeko also caught onto the reason for my alarm and echoed what I had just said. However, before Shizuka could even do anything about it, a large broken piece of asphalt concrete came flying towards the Humvee.

As a result, it hit the left rear corner of the Humvee and flung both Rei and I off of the roof, as well as threw the vehicle itself onto it's right side in a violent manner.

Shit. That was definitely going to cause some damage.

When Rei and I were both suddenly launched off of the Humvee, we essentially followed the same path towards the ground, which allowed me to quickly grab the brunette at the last second and use myself as a cushion for her fall.

Between the two of us, I was able to take a lot more physical punishment, after all.

Of course, it wasn't going to negate the fact that it still hurt like a bitch.
