Chapter 112 – The history of Sabrina, Robin, and Zayla
"I'm sorry for…" He was about to apologize when Matilda cut him off.1
"No, please don't apologize. I just thought I'd never hear those words from you."
Her voice was teary, and she clung to him as if her world was dependent on it. Devin was now the confused one.
"I don't get it," he said honestly. Matilda was about to confess but wondered when he began to feel this way about her.
"How long have you kept this in your heart?" She asked curiously, breaking from the hug and leaning back in her seat.
Devin wanted to pull her closer, but he had not gotten her response and felt it was wrong to just do as he felt. He began to recall the past with a thin smile,
"Ever since I saw you with Sabrina the first time. She had kicked Zayla out of her life after seeing her with Robin, right after confessing how much she loved Robin to Zayla and telling Zayla that Robin was sick and she wanted to save him."
As Devin recalled the story, his anger boiled towards Robin for how much Sabrina had gone through because of him. He continued to say,
"She told Zayla that Robin had a rare blood group and was not going to get a kidney donor, but she had checked and realized that she was a match.
She had the same blood group as Robin, AB negative. Zayla asked about her plans, and she said she did not want Robin to love her because she gave him her kidney."
"That she would wait until Robin fell in love with her even before knowing. When she saw Zayla with Robin, she was broken, and I told her not to do it. I even told my father not to approve of it because she was just fifteen. But my father loved Robin's father so much, just as I love Martin. He signed the papers, and Sabrina anonymously donated her kidney."
Tears formed in Devin's eyes as he continued to recount the details of the story to Matilda. He knew that Matilda already knew about the kidney transplant but without the details.
"In her time of recovery, your father bought a house close to ours, and you became our neighbor. You ran into our house and said you were lonely and wanted to play."
Matilda smiled when she recalled that part. She was fourteen going on fifteen, and Devin was almost an adult. He was strikingly handsome, but by then, she did not have any intention of a relationship.
She just needed a friend to play with because she was bored.
"You said you'd play with me, and I said that you are a boy. I wanted to play with a girl. Then you brought Lizzy, and I said she was so full of herself," Matilda took the words from his mouth. Devin smiled and took it back.
"Then I told you she was just going through a moment because our sister had just undergone surgery. You insisted on seeing her, and you slept by her bedside that day. Your father came looking for you everywhere, and my dad said no girl had come to our house because he had not seen you. So, I told him you were in Sabrina's room."
"My dad came? Then why did I wake up by Sabrina's side? He would have carried me home because he never liked me going to people's houses. He always feared that I would get into trouble one day," Matilda recalled.
Devin smiled and explained further,
"When your dad saw you sleeping beside Sabrina and holding her hand tightly, he left with tears in his eyes, saying that you wanted a sibling, but he could not give you one because your mother had died, and he did not plan to marry again."
Matilda wiped a tear from her eyes at the knowledge that her father had come to look for her that day. When she woke up, she thought he was angry with her and had not bothered to look for her. Now she realized how wrong she was and instantly missed him. Devin continued to say,
"That was when I fell in love with you."
"Why did you not tell me?" Matilda asked, realizing that he even loved her longer than she thought all these years.
Whereas she thought she was the only one suffering. If one of them had been bold enough, it would have ended their years of agony, and Matilda would not have fallen into the likes of Stanley's hands.
"At first, we were both young, so I thought that I just loved you like I loved my sisters. Then you both went to the same college. You were a woman, but I was afraid that you only saw me as a brother, and I didn't want to destroy your friendship with Sabrina, just in case you ran away because you didn't want to see me again. I was scared," Devin face-palmed, feeling ashamed.
He never felt so vulnerable in the presence of any woman, not even Lindsay, whom he thought he loved.
Matilda was feeling strange. She could not believe that this was happening, but seeing how Devin had turned out, he could not lie about this.
"Hahaha, I can't believe that a violent man like you would be scared of a skittish girl like me," she cracked a joke to loosen the atmosphere.
Devin chuckled and was not ashamed to feel that way. For the fact that she was not upset, his heart was gladdened.
"I tried to date other women, tried to make myself believe that what I felt for you was familial love. I tried to love them, but it didn't work until I met Lindsay. I thought I was in love with her because she was so much like you, and I felt that she was the right woman."
"Lindsay, the actress?" Matilda asked, feeling surprised. Lindsay was now a superstar, and from how two years of Matilda's life had been locked away, she felt intimidated.
