Chapter 303 – Martin does not love me anyway
Mara's lips curved into a smile, the first genuine one she had managed since her arrival in this wretched place. 2
Despite her weakness, she summoned the strength to speak, desperate for Peter to hear her plea and show her mercy.
"Pete, please, I need your help. I promise, we can be together," she implored.
In that moment, Mara realized the gravity of her mistake.
She shouldn't have confided in Peter about her pregnancy.
Even more so, she shouldn't have rejected his advances when he wanted to be intimate with her.
If only she had acquiesced, he would never have turned his back on her, and their relationship wouldn't be in ruins.
Regrettably, Peter remained unconvinced. He had hacked into the surveillance cameras in Mara's room, witnessing everything firsthand after Robin informed him that Mara had shot him.
The truth was disheartening for Peter, as he had hoped Mara would have a change of heart towards him.
He saw that most of the turmoil they faced was a result of her unwavering love for Martin and her fear of losing him.
"Where is your boyfriend?" Peter asked, his expression devoid of emotion.
Mara, though pitiful, clung to a glimmer of hope with Peter by her side.
Furthermore, his question made her believe that he had come to terms with her relationship with Martin.
"They've separated us. I don't know where they've taken him," she replied weakly, her voice laced with regret.
She had been blinded by her love for Martin, foolishly staying when she should have been running.
So, do you want me to save him too?" Peter asked her.
Since she had promised him that they were going to be together, he expected her to say no. But to his awe, she responded, "Yes, yes."
"And will he still go to Sabrina?" Peter asked her, and Mara felt defeated for the first time.
She was certain that Martin no longer had a chance with Sabrina because there was no way Robin would let her out of his sight.
The way he rushed to her aid when Mara intended to put an end to her life was still a surprise to her.
"He won't stand a chance."
Peter sighed,
"So, what would you do if I help the two of you?" he asked, hoping that she would include him in her plans. But once again, his hopes were dashed.
"We shall travel far from here. We won't cause trouble. I already lost my baby."
It would have been good for Peter since she lost the baby. At least Martin would not come between them.
Though he saw everything, he still asked her, "How did that happen?"
"Robin slapped me for calling Sabrina a bitch, and I fell and hit my waist," Mara recounted bitterly.
She wanted to die, but it seemed that even death was running away from her.
How could she have been so stupid to put her life in Martin's hands? She should never have hoped that he would love her when he was obsessed with another.
Peter forced a smile, though his eyes betrayed his true emotions.
He had hoped that, despite everything, Mara would still have some love for him in her heart. If she did, he would have defied Robin for her. But once again, she let him down.
"Perhaps you shouldn't have lied to him. I didn't come here to torment you, but I also didn't come to rescue you," Peter stated, crushing any remaining hope Mara had.
Her already pale face grew even paler, and the little hope she clung to vanished.
"Please, Pete. You're my only hope," Mara pleaded, her tears already spent, unable to shed any more.
She would have found solace in Sabrina's death, but the fact that Sabrina was still alive while she suffered alone was the most agonizing thing for her to bear.
What do I gain from helping you?" Peter asked, and Mara felt a glimmer of hope.
Money held no value for her anymore, as she faced the possibility of death and leaving it behind for someone else to enjoy.
"I can give you money. We still have a substantial amount saved up," Mara offered.
Peter shook his head, once again disappointed, and his love for her slowly fading with each interaction.
Bitterness laced his tone as he asked her,
"I already told you that I don't need money. Did you ever even ask what I do for a living? All my life, Mara, I wanted us to be together. I wanted to make you happy, but you had to get pregnant by a man you always called your brother."
Mara saw the pain and disappointment in his eyes, and she felt a profound sense of loss. "I'm sorry, but love makes us do insane things. Please, Pete, help me?"
Pete forced a smile as he looked down at her pitiful form. The general and his men were heartless, but did Mara deserve their cruelty?
"You can't pay me, Mara. You know that I don't need money."
"I can offer you sex," Mara blurted out, but he only shook his head even more.
"No. I was only accepting sex because I thought it would create a connection between us, and that eventually, you would fall in love with me. But it didn't happen. I was just testing you, and I realized that you are still in love with Martin," Peter revealed, leaving Mara disheartened for being honest with him.
However, she was willing to do anything to escape this mess, even if it meant sending assassins after Sabrina later. As long as she was alive, Mara would know no peace.
"So, what do you want?" she asked seriously, and Peter couldn't help but chuckle.
"What I desire, you have already relinquished, so you see, it is impossible for you to repay me," Peter said indifferently.
Mara lamented, regretting her previous words. Given another chance, she would have expressed herself differently.
"I am willing to change. I will love only you. Martin does not love me anyway," she pleaded, hoping to touch Peter's heart.
