Chapter 188 – Can I get a friendly hug?
"What did he leave for me?"1
Robin saw the curiosity in her eyes and was a little remorseful.
He could not tell her just yet and tried shifting her attention to something else,
"You said his clothes had stories to them."
Sabrina's eyes lit, recounting her adventures with her father-in-law. To her, the man was her father, and never added in-law when addressing him.
She began shifting the clothes one by one until her hand caught one of interest to her, and she smiled,
"Yes. This one, I gifted it to him during his last Christmas with us. He loved it so much, he wore it a lot."
She held another one but did not remove it from the hanger. It was a black casual Lacoste.
"This one was something I bought for you but you came home drunk so I got upset and gave it to him. It wasn't meant for someone his age but he wore it and looked so good. I remember us taking a picture together."
Robin lowered his head in shame when he saw how gloomy she looked talking about him being drunk.
He made a silent vow in his heart to never visit the club again, since that was where all his problems began.
"I got this suit specially made for him on the day he graduated with his Doctorate degree. He begged you to attend but you never did. The suit made him so joyous and do you know what he said?"
Robin shook his head with a pitiful expression. It was a painful realization that Sabrina and his father found happiness with each other.
"He said that he wished I was a boy."
Robin felt a pain in his chest at the revelation and could vaguely discern that his father must have given up on him and wished that Sabrina was rather his son.
It still did not make him judgmental and he wanted to confirm the reason, asking,
"Why?"
Sabrina shook her head pitifully. She never had a normal chat with Robin like this when they were married but are doing so now. How ironic!
"I don't know, and I didn't ask."
"What about that red shirt?" Robin pointed at a shirt that seemed isolated.
Sabrina's countenance darkened at the sight of it. She did not intend to reveal the story behind it.
"It's better I don't say it."
Her reluctance, to Robin's understanding, was an indication that she was hiding something unpleasant.
Since she started it, Robin wanted to hear it all. He was ready to carry the guilt.
"Please, I want to hear it."
A tear slipped down Sabrina's eyes but she quickly wiped it and recalled the sad but intriguing story.
"On Valentine's Day two years ago, I prepared a special candle-lit dinner for you."
Robin felt another ball of regret hit his head as Sabrina continued the story,
"I was hoping that it would make you happy so you'll make me your priority. I discussed it with your father and he gave me tips on the things you would like."
Her voice was suddenly heavy with emotions but she refused to cry again this time around.
It was already over and to shed more tears would only mean she had not gotten over it.
"He called you on the phone and you said you have more important matters to attend to and not trivial things like me, who had nothing to do except sitting up and waiting for you to return."
Robin recalled that day that he was in a hotel room with three women, not knowing how to hide his shame.
Perhaps he should have allowed her to skip the story of the red shirt.
"I heard the voice of your whores in the background, telling you to hang up and come to bed and you did."
Sabrina smiled bitterly but Robin's eyes were red and swollen with unshed tears whilst she continued the story, even when Robin had wished that she wouldn't.
"I wept that night, thinking that my hard work was wasted and accepting that I would never be good enough for you. Your father came and dined with me. He was wearing that red shirt which he bought for you."
From how broken Robin was, he would not be surprised that Sabrina felt worse. She forced a smile, looked him in the eyes, and spat coldly,
"This is it, Robin. The reason why I would never consider ever remarrying you. Everything about your father makes me smile but all you bring is pain."
"There are no good memories of you and me and I have nothing to hold on to."
She walked out after speaking her mind. Robin froze for a while before he followed her, though he wanted to stay behind for a little longer to think about all that she had said but also knew that she would be waiting for him in the car.
After giving the keys to Grandma's driver, he walked to his car and sat in the passenger seat. It took a while before he started the ignition and stepped on the accelerator.
The drive back to Sabrina's mansion was extremely quiet, as they were both lost in different thoughts.
Robin did not know how to wipe her pains of the past of him but was also worried that she was hungry.
"Should we stop somewhere and grab something to eat?"
Sabrina sneered at the thought of eating with him in a public place.
"Who knows if we bump into a paparazzi or something? I will go and eat at home."
The meaning of her words was clear to Robin that she did not want to be seen with him and the public and it shattered his heart.
All his hope was lost at this moment. "Okay. We shall go and eat at home."
Sabrina did not respond and again, silence returned. When they reached the mansion, Robin asked after opening the car door for her,
"Can I get a friendly hug?"
