Chapter 77 – Mara’s strange concern
The next day, news about the scandal from two years ago concerning the General's daughter rescued in the club with a drug overdose sprang up again with a video. 2
It was on all social media channels as well as newspapers and even the news. This time, people were not cursing Matilda but rather, the man in the video and sympathizing with Matilda.
The news spread very fast and netizens were requesting the arrest of the man who destroyed the life of Matilda Saint two years ago.
When Martin saw the news, he was surprised since he had tried to get anything to prove Matilda's innocence but was told that the video had been wiped.
He did not want to tell Matilda because of how disappointed Sabrina would be and said he was still working on it.
Whoever retrieved this video could be two things. Either he was a threat or someone powerful who was up to something.
He quickly called Devin, since he was not aware of it but the fact that it made Devin happy.
"Have you heard the news about Matilda?"
"Yes, I'm behind it," Devin confessed. He had been so busy and did not have time to inform Martin. Martin was surprised and slightly disappointed to not have been told since they were working on it together.
"How did you know? I thought your hacker and mine could not get anything?" Martin asked, hiding his consternation.
"Indeed, but it was delivered to my doorstep," Devin said honestly and Martin was somehow confused.
"Your doorstep? By who?"
"I have no idea but since it involved authentic information, I had to use it," Devin revealed.
Martin was uneasy about whoever this mysterious helper was since the person seemed to be more powerful than either of them to be able to get something they both could not get.
"You don't care about the source?"
"I'm still trying but at the moment, I am more concerned about getting the fool arrested for what he did to Matilda," Devin said seriously.
He could not help the burning rage inside him when he saw the video yesterday and how Matilda broke down. Something he never felt for a long time awoke inside of him.
"You have taken it personally. Are you liking her? You know what I mean," Martin asked.
Knowing his best friend and the way he spoke, Martin discerned that there was more but neither did Devin deny it.
"It's difficult to not like her."
"Devin, you know what I mean," Martin insisted, which meant that he wanted the plain truth and details of the whole matter.
"Yes, I like her but I have always tried to not date someone who is a friend or a family member's friend. You know what happens when problems arise. You end up hurting a lot of people," Devin revealed.
Before the drug incident, he had always had a thing for Matilda but for the fact that she was Sabrina's best friend, Devin avoided it.
Martin seemed to like her for Devin as well and encouraged him,
"Matilda does not seem like trouble."
"I know and I'm still thinking about it. I also don't want it to be like she owes me for clearing her name kind of thing," Devin said thoughtfully.
He has always been responsible, putting reasoning above feelings. He kept it for years and did not think it would be difficult to keep covering what he felt for Matilda.
"I wish you all the best," Martin stated before the call ended.
As soon as Martin hung up and returned to work, his phone began to ring and it was Mara. Worriedly, he answered it.
"Mara, are you alright?"
"Martin, you can't let them find the man in the video. You just can't," Mara was perspiring heavily while she was speaking at the end of the line but Martin could not see it. He disagreed with his sister,
"He deserves to be punished for what he did not to an innocent girl."
Mara was shivering from fear. This was something she did secretly and Martin was not aware of it. There was no way of confessing it without Martin knowing about her long-kept secret.
Mara took deep breaths and thought carefully before explaining,
"I think the same thing but I want us to rather do the punishment."
"I don't understand you, Mara. You don't even know Matilda so why are you concerned? Are you aware that she is Sabrina's best friend?" Martin asked seriously.
Mara was sniffling at the end of the line and Martin's worry kept increasing as she went on to explain,
"It's just pitiful. I cried while watching the video."
Martin sighed with relief, feeling that she was just taking pity on Matilda, which somehow felt strange since Mara hated anyone close to Sabrina.
She only had not dared to touch Lizzy also because of Devin.
"Don't worry. Devin is already trying to get the guy involved and I believe Matilda's dad would also be doing his part."
Mara was even more disturbed at the revelation. She could not allow that to happen. "Why don't you do it for Sabrina? It would help her to make up her mind faster," Mara pitched to Martin's interest, so he would not be suspicious of her.
Martin nodded his head at the thought. The more he did things that pleased Sabrina, the happier she would be with him.
Right now, she was still upset because of what Zayla did so this might indeed help matters and make her happy again.
"You have a point. She loves her best friend so much. I will see what I can do."
"Don't be afraid to use as much money as needed. I don't need to approve this one," Mara said again, Martin felt weird.
When Mara spoke like that, then it meant she was giving Martin no room to fail the task, which made him feel like there was more to it.
"I'm I supposed to think that you are being generous?" Martin asked suspiciously.
"What makes you think that I care about what you think?" Mara asked in return, Martin gave up.
"Alright, I will let you know the outcome."
