Chapter 109 – A father's advice on love

Cobby did not hide the truth from Devin because he knew that Sabrina would deal with Robin. That girl was very kind, but she also knew the right places to pinch.1

"I know that he wants her back, but it's up to Sabrina to decide if she wants to go back to him or not. I will never encourage nor stop her." 

Cobby saw Devin's eyes glazed with unbelief and disappointment, but he did not judge him, rather understanding how difficult it was for Devin to get the true meaning of love.

Perhaps since Devin had not tasted all the sides of love, which included the sweetness, pain, bitterness, and hate, but also forgiveness, change, and second chances, it was very hard for him to grasp everything just like that.

Cobby explained further, 

"Everyone makes mistakes, but does everyone deserve a second chance? Everyone gets burnt by the fire, but it's a matter of whose fire was hotter and who sustained the most injuries. If your injuries deter you from being attracted to anyone else, then that is also a problem."

Devin did not respond and tried to break down his father's projection of love. He was able to get the understanding that it could bring a lot of pain, but sometimes, that was the beginning. 

Once you can go past that level, a new chapter automatically opens.

"In life, everybody's story is different. A man can put a price on a woman, depending on how she appeals to his heart," Cobby concluded and continued to look at his son with affection. Devin leaned back on the chair in deep thought. 

He understood that his sisters should be allowed to make their own choices, just as his philosophies about not dating his sister's best friend were wrong.

"I understand, Dad."

Cobby smiled, grateful that his honest words had not fallen on rocks but on good soil. "Good. If I am not there one day, I want you to take care of your sisters with wisdom and not only with strength."

Devin sniffled his laughter, knowing that his father was talking about his aggressiveness toward the men who came close to his sisters. 

"I get it. Thank you for telling me this."

Cobby shook his head. He did not want the appreciation. He only wanted to see the changes his words brought into his life. 

"It's my duty as your father. I did not tell you before because I thought that you already knew."

After accepting his father's definition of the language of love, Devin found the need to ask him,

"Dad, do you think that Matilda feels anything for him?" He was afraid that, just like other girls, Matilda would develop feelings for Daniel, and if that happened, then it would make it difficult for Devin to win her heart.

"All I saw in her eyes was confusion and shock," Cobby said in honesty. 

Devin smiled and said, "Thank you for telling me." 

It was a relief to know that Matilda did not fall for Daniel just like that. However, his father's next words brought discomfort into his heart.

"But as for your sister, I saw hurt."

Devin was upset. He did not want to accept that his sister felt the tiniest bit of attraction towards Daniel, but his father was telling him something else, which meant that he was reading his sister wrongly, or she was pretending before him in the bid to make him happy. 

Devin did not know which was which.

"Daniel was hitting on her, but I stopped him, and the last time he came to the company, he asked her to make a dress for his girlfriend. So, if he has a girlfriend, then why should he be hitting on Matilda too?"

Devin was raging like an angry volcano. His father smiled. Playboys were difficult to understand. 

When you think they are in love, you might wake up to realize it was all a façade, and when you thought they were not serious, you might just wake up another day to be in for another surprise.

"Don't judge too quickly, son, lest you end up with regrets but watch closely without reacting. Then things would gradually fall into place," Cobby issued both a warning and advice. 

Due to the subtlety in his voice, it only came out as kind advice.

"Alright. I hope your method works," Devin gave up and spoke. Cobby did not want him to apply the rules blindly and said,

"It's an ancient method, but it works every time."

"I will call Lizzy for you," Devin said before stepping out of his father's car. 

Something laid heavily on his heart, and he felt like if he did not let it out, he was going to burst from it.

In his car, the two women were still confused about everything that happened. 

Matilda was sure that Daniel was up to something and also felt that Robin was involved but could not conclude exactly what it was. 

If they were just trying to pick on Devin, then Matilda felt saddened in her heart for Devin since all he tried to do was protect her.

"Do you like him?" Lizzy suddenly asked Matilda, bringing her out of her thoughts. Matilda thought carefully about the question, not wanting to lie to her.

"I don't know him, but I must admit that I was moved by his boldness. He is like he wants something, and he goes ahead to claim it."

Lizzy felt uneasy but also thought that perhaps it was because Matilda had no idea who Daniel was. 

"He is a player, just like Robin."

"Players change when they find the right woman," Matilda responded. 

She did not think that any man was broken beyond repairs. No one was perfect for as long as she was concerned, for which reason, life gives us a chance to make things right.

Unknown to her, her ideologies confused Lizzy a lot. She asked directly, 

"So, what will you say in Sabrina's situation? That she was not the right woman for Robin?"
