PREPARATION TO THE SILVER RIVER PACK
I could spend hours talking to you and it only feels like a handful of moments. And I know that life can be difficult and challenges get in the way, but with you, life feels effortless. It feels like the struggle is worth it. Just to see you at the end of the day. When I am with you, the sadness goes away.
*** Pillow Thoughts; Courtney Pepperneil ***
It was not easy for Cane to deal with this feeling of fear. The blissful moment only lasted momentarily, until he saw Iris exhausted face and how some part of her body had bruised. The color irritated him. He was afraid, something so bad could happen to her.
But then, if she could survive their previous intimacy when he was not careful enough, she must have survived this, this consolation thought was not really help actually, because it irked him even more to be reminded of something that forever would be engraved in his mind and heart.
"You don't need to be worried, Cane. I am only a little bit tired," Iris said, she stretched out her arms and Cane carefully came closer and rested his forehead on her shoulder, as they hugged each other, in this position, it was obvious that he didn't put all of his weight on her.
"How do you feel?" Cane asked after some time passed. He licked the bruises on her neck, where he bit his mark on her skin.
"I feel… good," Iris cleared her throat. "How do you feel?"
Cane stopped licking her bruises. "Awful." He started to communicate his feeling now, though it was not the answer that Iris anticipated.
"What?" Iris pushed him slightly away from her, so she could see his face. He still had this emotionless expression, but his eyes were so gloomy, as if there was a storm that brew inside him. "Did I… that bad? I told you I didn't know what to do."
Cane was speechless, he was mad because the outcome was not the way he wanted it to be, since Iris got hurt, but here she was; thinking she didn't perform enough. Who cared about that?
"Iris, you can play dead and lay down still like a plank for all I care." Cane's voice was very stern. "I will not complain and still find you attractive."
Iris blushed. What was that supposed to mean? "Is that a compliment?"
Hearing the question, Cane chuckled. He laughed more nowadays, even with the tragedy that befell on his pack and how they were in dire situation. She managed to crack him up, even when he was upset and frustrated.
The way she blushed, the way she asked him timidly and how she tried to look nonchalant, but failed miserably. He liked this side of her and how some time, he would find her ogled at him with fascination.
Cane was not sure what she found so attractive about him, he could see the way she loved him fearlessly and wanted to try everything for him. She stretched her boundaries and tested her limit for him. She endured everything… the pain, the agony, the hardship that came when she chose to be with him and here she was; still staring at him with adoration in her eyes.
He was a monster, but still, she came closer to him undauntedly.
It was surreal to have this woman in his life when he thought, he wouldn't fall for anyone anymore, but here he was, succumbed in her presence and was unable to let her go.
It started with her giving him the Blue Moon pack, but it ended up with him giving her his whole heart.
There was nothing much, his heart was not pretty, after all, it had been broken and shattered into million pieces, but by some miracle, it was still beating and now, it beat for her…
"You did nothing wrong," Cane said softly, he grabbed her hands and kissed her knuckles solemnly. "I am disappointed, because in the end, I still hurt you."
"No, you didn't." Iris was adamant. She felt uneasy when she thought, Cane wouldn't try it again with her. Well, she only said she was sore, but she didn't complain…
Cane chuckled again, he could see how eager Iris was to prove how she was fine, when the evidence was all over her skin.
"You need to eat more and rest." Cane kissed the tip of her nose and stood up right in time someone knocked on the door to deliver Iris's meal and medicine.
After her stomach was full and they talked about what Cane's next plan was, Iris fell asleep again. She snored softly, looked content, as she rested her head on his laps and Cane checked on a few reports, while caressing her head.
Iris slept all the way through afternoon and only woke up before dinner time. She felt better and the sore had decreased significantly, it must be Cane, who dutifully applied the medicine when she was sleeping, since it should be reapplied every three hours.
Iris felt so embarrassed, but there was this beautiful smile on her lips. She liked it when Cane paid attention to her.
The next day, they discussed about leaving to the Silver River pack. Like usual, Jace would be in charged for the pack, while Ethan would come with them, so did Redmond, which meant, he would probably not be able to be there when Sofia gave birth to his firstborn.
The thought of it gave him a mix of feeling.
"I don't care about the baby," Redmond grumbled, every time he thought about the matter. "Women gave birth every day. It's not like I can do anything about it anyway." He gulped down the entire drink and slammed it against the table, as he left the money and walked back home.
Sofia had toned down her nastiness a little bit now, though Redmond was not sure what the cause of the change of attitude, but it was nice not to have to fight with her in every single moment they were in close proximity. She also made Maria stopped to argue with him, which helped Redmond a lot, because he was on the verge of bashing that old woman's head against the wall for bothering him so much.
"I heard you are going with the alpha and the other to the other pack," Sofia broke the silence between them when they were having their dinner. Maria dutifully cooked for her and supplied everything she needed, since she was not allowed to step into the pack house. 1
The old woman was still thinking the alpha would come to his sense, once the baby was born, thus she didn't bother him so much, especially when she was not able to see him, even when she tried so hard to do so.
With everything that was going on in the pack, the problem with Sofia didn't look so important again in the eyes of the most pack member, as they had a lot of things to deal with, more so when their alpha didn't even pay attention to this pregnant woman. They started to question the baby as well. Now, Kaz was not in the picture to rally people behind him to worship Sofia, some of them only had her in the back of their mind.
"Yeah," Redmond answered curtly, as he ate his food, while Sofia played with it, seemingly didn't have any appetite.
"How could they bring you with them when you are part of the pack that had attacked them? They still trust you?"
Redmond frowned and stopped eating when he heard the question. "If you are still clueless about what is going on and what is going to happen, I will educate you a little bit here," he said in light tone.
Sofia pursed her lips. She knew she was not that bright when it came to the state of affair or read the power struggles between men over territory and whatnot, but it vexed her when Redmond pointed that out in not very nice way. Still, she didn't curse at him.
"Cane is the only alpha in the south, with the power struggle in the capital city and how those people fought for the throne, he is going to unite the whole seven packs in the south under his command. Soon, there is no more seven packs in the south, only one and he will be the alpha." Redmond was not really good at explanation, so he only blurted out the common thing that people had predicted when they read the shift in power.
Therefore, what he told her was only a common knowledge that had spread among people.
"More so, if they still bothered me with the fact those traitors came from Blue Moon pack, I can remind them I have killed most of my comrades and I will do the same if they didn't shut their mouth up."
Redmond then ate more aggressively, he was irritated to be reminded of that and Sofia didn't try to engage in conversation with Redmond again.
It was not that she wanted to upset him, she only wanted to have someone to talk to, but she didn't know what the safe topic to be discussed…
===============================
"What do you want?" Cane asked Haco, as the sorcerer came to visit him in the study room. His expression looked trouble, which told Cane there must be something important he wanted to tell him.
Meanwhile, Iris was sitting next to Cane, doing her own thing. She had been learning about medicine with Grace and Ardand in the past few days.
