SHE IS HER OWN PERSON
"Cane! How can you do that?" Jace rushed toward Cane once he learned about what Cane had decided. "You know I will never agree to it. Why did you make this decision on your own without saying anything to me?!" Jace was too furious, as he forgot his place for a moment there.
Currently, they were in the fortress, as Lou explained a few things to Cane about what he was going to do with the protection around the Howling Wolf pack.
The merchant grinned to see how furious the beta toward his alpha. "It seems, I am not the only one, who dissatisfied with your decision. You are a terrible decision maker." Lou didn't hold back when he mocked Cane, though he was laughing and pretending what he said was only a joke.
He had been very upset because he couldn't see Iris, not even a glimpse of that auburn hair, but the profit that Cane offered to him was too important for his greedy ass to stir trouble with this alpha beyond repair.
Therefore, Lou could only satisfy himself by throwing a hidden insult and mocking Cane here and there, which made him even more furious because the alpha didn't seem to care.
The way Cane could be so nonchalant some time made Lou dumbfounded. As a busy body like him, he couldn't understand how this shifter could tune out the world from his care.
"Know your place, beta," Cane said assertively.
Only then, Jace realized he was in the presence of someone else and it was noy appropriate for him to talk in that way with Cane.
"My apologize, alpha," Jace said, he lowered his head, but it didn't make the tension left him.
"You can leave now, Lou. I will call you again if there is something important," Cane talked to the merchant, the way he spoke, it almost like this merchant was one of his employees and was not important enough to spend his time with…
Though it was true in a sense, but Lou couldn't help it, but became so mad. Thankfully, he was pretty good at hiding it and smiled like usual.
"Sure, I am very busy after all to listen to your beta's complain. My time is precious." Lou turned around, but before he could leave them alone, Cand added.
"Do your job well and you will get what you want sooner." Of course, what Cane meant was to introduce him to someone from the other continent, so this merchant could expand his business. "Stay away from the pack house."
Lou turned around and was about to shout at the alpha, but Cane had walked away with Jace, so no one would hear their conversation.
"Damn you, Cane!" Lou cursed through his gritted teeth, he looked like he was going to explode, while Sabian approached him.
"Are you, okay, master?" he asked carefully. "I want to let you know that Lil Thing is missing again."
"I am not okay and I don't care with that creature!" Lou stormed away, he was too frustrated every time he finished talking with Cane, but he couldn't choose not to stick with him, now the whole continent learned that he was one of Cane's people.
Actually, Lou knew where that stupid rumor came from that he was one of Cane's people, which pictured him as someone in lower status compared to him, but he couldn't confront Cane without valid evidence, after all, how could you find evidence with a rumor?
This alpha was very cunning through and through.
On the other hand, Cane and Jace walked toward the other part of the fortress, where the guards and warriors just finished with their meals and left the spot to work again. They greeted the alpha and the beta respectfully before resigned themselves.
"Cane, how can you put my sister in danger by appointed her as one of the luna's personal warriors? She has seven already and there will be a lot of warriors around her, she doesn't need extra hand. Couldn't you see she feels uncomfortable with the other warriors that she is not close to?"
Jace could see how Iris was a little bit awkward with the other five warriors and most of her interaction would be with Eron and Dyne.
"Luna Iris and Aliana only have met a handful of time, she will feel uncomfortable. More so, how can you assign my sister without telling me anything?" Jace felt frustrated and anxious to think his sister would be in danger with this new assignment.
Cane listened to his complain without saying anything, he let his beta to vent out his grievances and only when he was done, Cane finally spoke. "It's your sister's idea. She is adamant to be the luna's personal warrior."
"What?! She is not even a warrior! Why you agreed with her?!" Jace exploded, but a single glance from Cane made him held himself back.
"Tone down, Jace. I am still your alpha. This is how you talk to me?" Cane asked grimly and this managed to make Jace kept himself in check.
"My apologize again, alpha. I am too agitated." Jace balled his fists and clenched his jaw. He looked so defeated and hopeless. Because he knew, if Aliana was the one, who suggested it and Cane had agreed there was no amount of words or pleas would change the decision, both of them were pretty strong head to say the least. "But, I really wish you can reconsider this decision."
Cane stared at his beta, he looked so desperate. "Aliana gave me so many good point and benefit for her to be Iris's personal warrior, unless you can give me a better reason not to, the decision is final."
Jace opened his mouth to speak, but he shut it again, as his brain worked so hard to find him a reason for Cane to not go through with this plan, yet he failed to find any reasonable reason, thus he came up with whatever in his mind.
"She is not a warrior."
"She is a good fighter and a smart one, you know that," Cane replied easily. 1
"She is… a woman." Jace looked even more desperate, as he devalued his own little sister. "She is stubborn and hard to listen to an order."
"A woman…" Cane repeated the words, which made Jace flinched, because he knew Cane disliked the way he talked, but he kept a strong façade. "Aliana makes a good point for being a female warrior among the other male warriors that surround my mate. If you are going to emphasize that aspect, you are being resentful toward your sister and I don't condone such behavior, beta."
Jace gritted his teeth, as he pushed forward, knowing he already made a mistake and not to think about what Cane said just now.
"What reason she gave you? That make you agree with her suggestion?"
"Your sister said to talk with her if you asked this question."
"He is my little sister, Cane. The only person that related by blood with me. I promised to keep her out of harm way."
"Yes, no one will deny that Aliana is your sister, but on top of that, she is her own person."
Jace knew how true it was, but he is too far with his denial. "You will be like me if your twin siblings were still alive and they decided to put themselves in danger."
Cane was silence for a while, it had been a long time he talked about his siblings, it almost felt like they were in different lifetime from what he had right now. "Yes. I will try my best to put them away from harm way if I still had them, but they will be as stubborn as me to choose how they want to spend their lives."
Jace leaned his back against the wall of the fortress, as he stared at the bright sky, it was a perfect day for picnic. He remembered how he used to go with little Aliana and their parents before everything that went down with the Howling Wolf pack.
Aliana was a bright and brilliant little girl. She was strong in her mind and heart.
The thought, his dear little sister had to put her own life on the line for someone else, even though it was the luna, didn't put Jace's mind at ease. He didn't want her to go out of the pack, knowing what kind of danger she could face out there.
"I will talk with her, but if I managed to convince her to step down, will you grant it?"
"Naturally."
============================
"So, Hanna will be in charge for the orphanage?" Iris was surprised to hear what Aliana told her.
"Yes, Hanna and Will," Aliana added. "It seems, Will has some kind of breakdown, which makes the alpha free him from his duty."
"And you will come with me instead of Hanna?"
"Yes! How excited it will be, right? Are you excited, luna?!" Aliana looked so radiant, as she smiled brightly at Iris. "Do you like me to go with you?"
"Yes, I like it," Iris replied, she felt her worry slightly faded away when she found Aliana didn't hold any prejudice against her. She felt relax, after thinking she wouldn't get along with her, but right now, it seemed, they could be a good friend. "Hanna needs to rest and be with Will. He doesn't look in a good state now."
And with that, they talked about a few random things, until Aliana stopped and tilted her head. "You can come out now."
