Did I pass?
According to the late general, he never met this man who forced him to turn his back on Dominic Zhu. He never had any idea of what this man looked like, his nationality, or what this man could actually do. The only information the late general had about this person was… he was dangerous.0
This man who called himself No One was described as someone who seemed to have eyes, ears, hands, and feet everywhere. Even when the General put up a fight in the beginning, he eventually had to follow the man's orders. He had no choice. His family was in danger and even if he wasn't the most righteous person in the world and he had taken part in illegal dealings, the General was a father and a husband.
It just so happened that the decision he made was based solely on emotion and complacency that Dominic wouldn't hurt him. At least, he wouldn't hurt him just like this other man would.
No One...
What a strange name to call himself. However, people like this weren't new in the underground world. It didn't have to have a significant meaning behind it.
"I see..." Heaven rocked her head in understanding, listening to every detail being told by Dominic. She snapped her eyes up as a plate landed before her, gazing up ever so slowly to meet her husband's eyes.
Dominic spread his palms on the edge of the counter, bending over as he grabbed a fork from one of the drawers. "In the end, that's the only clue we got. I have to admit it somehow poked my ego, considering the General didn't even know this man's name. And yet, he chose him over me."
"But then again, I'm sure he considered other aspects before making such a big decision." He placed the fork on her plate, offering her a smile from across the counter. "I'm sure he has an idea that there were people out there who didn't need to let their names known before others fear them."
Just like Hera.
"It's still a good thing we know this No One might be Primo Rossi," he added knowingly, raising his brows to signal her to dig in. "We can make preparations."
Heaven kept her silence as she held her husband's gaze. Without a word, she picked up the cutlery, letting out a shallow breath.
"What did Bear say about it?" she asked, forking out a piece of omelette. "I'm surprised he let you kill the General."
"It's a personal grudge." Dominic shrugged. "I told him about it beforehand, and he said it's something personal. Therefore, he respects that I had to settle it on my own."
"He said that?"
"Mhm." Dominic nodded, acting as if this type of conversation was normal between husband and wife. "I did a lot of thinking about it. To be honest, I felt a little satisfaction watching the general feel helpless. It makes me think he finally understood what I felt that night."
Satisfaction?
Heaven arched a brow, pressing her lips into a thin line. "Darling, are you secretly a sadist?"
"Huh?"
"Not only did you torture the general but also, you found satisfaction in it." Heaven shoved another piece into her mouth and then rested her jaw on the bottom of her palm. "And then you even killed him. Don't get me wrong. I am not judging you. All I'm saying is, it's a surprise that you killed him immediately."
"I didn't kill him."
"Huh?"
"I said I tortured him and wanted to kill him, but I changed my mind," he casually explained, tilting his head to the side. His soft and cool expression didn't change, and there was no trace of deception in his eyes.
"Even though the late general betrayed me and I had all the reasons to hurt him, I thought he could still be useful. He might've been retired, but he still had connections that I don't. It's better to exploit him until he takes his last breath. That's even more torturous for him."
Deep lines appeared between her brows as she listened to his explanation. From the very beginning, she immediately assumed it was Dominic who ordered the General's death. His casual reaction to the news said it all.
What was he saying now?
"It's crazy," she breathed out. "But I don't think I'm following."
"When he told me everything he knew, I left him in his room. Though Mr. Cruel took off his noose, we let him tied on the table. He could take them off themselves. He used to be a military man. That should be easy for him."
"Then how did he die?"
"Maybe he knew that he would be spending the rest of his life licking my shoes like an animal," he guessed. "Or perhaps the other party finished the job for running his mouth."
Her eyes slightly squinted, assessing Dominic's face thoroughly. "Do you think it's the latter?"
"Do you?"
"Well." Heaven chewed her food slowly, drawing a deep breath as she pondered. "I suppose you already know that will happen, eventually."
"Mhm."
"Then why did you let it happen? If you think he can be useful, why you did you let them finish him off?"
Dominic pressed his lips as he hummed a long tune, watching his wife eat whilst having such a conversation. A short chuckle slipped past his lips, amused at how they casually conversed about things that he never thought he could ever talk about so casually.
'But then again, she lived a life where things like this happen every day.'
"I feel like I am currently being evaluated by my mentor," he humored with a light chuckle. "I do think he can still be useful, but protecting someone who's one of the reasons I almost lost my entire family is beyond my principles. Moreover, if his connections were truly that great, then he could've lived. But he didn't, and that saved me the trouble of putting my fate in his hands."
Dominic lowered his head to look at her at eye level, brows raised. "Did I pass?"
The corner of her lips curled up as her sharp eyes were glinting sharply. Propping her arms against the edge, she perked up. Heaven stretched her neck, planting a soft and quick peck on his lips. When she drew her head back, her lips stretched from ear to ear until her teeth were fully displayed.
"You learn fast. Makes me proud." Heaven winked at him, making his lips hook into a smirk.
"All thanks for having a great mentor."
As those words rolled out of his tongue, Dominic bent down for another round of kisses. This time, much more passionate than the last.
