Meaningful gifts (part 2)

Adela looked at Zephir with gratitude. He had finally brought her to the desired point.2

"Thank you," Adela blushed, stealing a glance at the Baroness and the majordomo who stood nearby, their expressions unreadable. After collecting her thoughts, she continued, "The gentleman... he possesses a captivating presence that cannot be denied. His acts of kindness and generosity have touched my heart deeply. His eyes, in their own unique and expressive way, have left an indelible mark on me... I have now decided what I want you to paint, a majestic hawk soaring through the sky, radiating an air of deserving arrogance, fiercely guarding what is rightfully his, and displaying an unmatched power that can conquer the heavens without a trace of harm."

Zephir looked both surprised and impressed. "If I may, My Lady, I believe such heartfelt words should reach the gentleman's ears. Allow me to suggest that you personally write them in your own handwriting, and I will ensure that they accompany the painting when it is delivered to him."

That step would indeed require boldness on her part, but considering the progress he was making in her direction, she made up her mind to go ahead with it.

The artist's keen eye anticipated her response before she even uttered a word. "Perfect!" he exclaimed, giving two claps of his hands. Two servants he had brought with him promptly set up the canvas and brushes. "Now, we must determine the size of the gift. I won't burden you with selecting colors and shades, as I have already envisioned them based on your eloquent description, My Lady. Please remain close by as I work, for I may seek the guidance of your exquisite eyes on certain aspects. I will ensure it is completed by nightfall."

"That would be wonderful," Adela replied, fully aware of Zephir's meticulous nature and his commitment to his art. She heard that once he picked up the brush, he would not set it down until the painting was finished. It was not uncommon for him to devote an entire day to perfecting an oil painting, seeking the input and feedback of the buyer along the way.

"Pardon me," Zephir said, his eyes fixed on her bracelet. "I apologize if I haven't been informed of recent developments. It appears that congratulations are in order. Are you and the gentleman now promised to each other?"

Bernard adjusted his monocle. "Young man, I suggest you refrain from making such bold assumptions. The Lady has called you here to create a return gift, not to spread unfounded rumors. In the Kingdom of Emoria, the announcement of Lady de Lanark's engagement to a worthy lord will be made by the royal family in due time."

Zephir looked perplexed. "But that is a Kolhisan promise ring on the lady's wrist. I assumed that Lady Adelaide de Lanark and Sir Egon von Conradie had finally exchanged vows," he turned to Adela, seeking confirmation. "Are you not betrothed to him?"

Adela composed herself, realizing the implications of the situation. She had harbored doubts about the nature of the ring, as a similar one had been given to her by Claude in the past. Speculations about her relationship with Egon had been circulating throughout Lanark, especially after Larissa's engagement ceremony. It was unsurprising that someone from Kolhis would recognize the promise ring on her wrist.

She offered Zephir a small smile. "No, we are not engaged."

Egon was taking steps in her direction, but nothing would be set in stone until he formally sought her father's permission to marry her.

Zephir shook his head stubbornly. "Allow me to enlighten you then on Kolhisan traditions, My Lady," He gestured for her to come closer, but she stood her ground, maintaining her distance as she stared at him intently.

He let out a sigh."In Kolhis, a promise ring holds tremendous significance and goes beyond being a mere precursor to engagement. It is a solemn vow that transcends the boundaries of a marriage contract, symbolizing a commitment that extends even beyond death, forbidding either party from being with another for as long as they live," Zephir explained passionately. "I must admit that I do not intend to offer such a ring to my future wife. It carries immense responsibility."

"The proposal has not been made yet," the Baroness interjected, sensing Bernard's mounting frustration. "House de Lanark would appreciate it if the details of our Lady's return gift are kept confidential, both by you and your acquaintances."

Zephir winked at Adela, a mischievous gleam in his eyes. "Your secret is safe with me, and I have a feeling that a formal proposal will come sooner rather than later. I shall eagerly await the joyful news."

"Alright then!" Adela exclaimed, trying to mask the awkwardness with exaggerated enthusiasm. "Please let me know if you require anything else from me. I shall take my leave now to prepare for the forthcoming feast." With that, she turned around, ready to exit the drawing room.

"Will you extend an invitation to me for the feast of the Second Order, My Lady?" Zephir's voice unexpectedly rang out from behind her.

She paused and turned back to see his hands clasped together, his expression seemed almost prayerful.

"...The feast for the Second Order is a grand event, attended by esteemed guests and members of high society," she acknowledged, her voice reflecting her contemplation. "Inviting an artist like yourself would certainly be an unconventional choice, but I believe your unique artistic perspective could bring a delightful charm to the occasion."

A conflicted expression crossed her face, the feast held significance beyond mere celebration; it served as a means to mend relationships between the knights of the two orders and uphold the facade surrounding recent events that took place in the forest. The secrecy and delicate balance surrounding the massacre in the dungeon were at stake, and the inclusion of Zephir could introduce an unforeseen element.

Though a wave of discomfort washed over her, Adela managed to smile and nod at Zephir. "If you desire it, I will arrange for you to receive an invitation to the feast for the Second Order. I hope that you find joy and inspiration amidst the festivities."
