Visions of Varinthia

Varinthia was a kingdom located in a distant land, known for its diverse and tribal culture. 1

Rich traditions yet simple customs, where respect for elders and reverence for the wisdom of the past were highly valued. The kingdom boasted lush landscapes and high mountains, skilled warriors and powerful magic users who played integral roles in the kingdom's history and governance.

That was all the Adela had ever read about it.

The young king, who commanded respect effortlessly, and the Archduke of Lanark embraced warmly after their handshake, slapping each other on the shoulders—a show of camaraderie seldom seen among noblemen in public, even when they were siblings.

"It has indeed been a while," Aldric said, his gaze briefly shifting to Adela before returning to Kaiser.

Kaiser's voice carried a touch of emotion as he replied, "Welcome to your second home."

Observing the fondness between the two men, Adela felt a warm sensation within her. She had initially believed that such closeness was reserved for Kaiser's relationship with Gustav, but now she realized she had been mistaken.

She decided to place her trust in her father's judgment.

"Kaiser, I noticed a woman riding a mare to a carriage bearing the de Lanark's crest this morning. Is she your daughter?" Aldric inquired, as if Adela, who was right by her father's side, was transparent.

But that detail was not of immediate significance at that moment.

Desolation washed over her as she realized that the young King must have been a silent witness to her tears earlier. She was left wondering if he would dare breach the boundaries of tact and address the incident.

Perhaps Egon was justified in being cautious around him.

Kaiser leaned closer to Adela, his voice hushed whispers in her ear, "In Varinthia, it is customary for a man to seek permission from a father before addressing his daughter. Rest easy."

She pondered over the expression she must have had on her face for her father to take the time to explain.

Kaiser cleared his throat and spoke up, "Yes, allow me to introduce you to my daughter, Adelaide de Lanark."

Aldric's midnight blue eyes fell upon Adela, lingering this time as he extended his hand. Trying to emulate her father's gesture, she extended her hand instead of placing it on top of his.

King Aldric took her hand in his, instead of a customary greeting, he gently turned her hand and pressed his lips to her palm.

A small gasp escaped Adela's lips. The unexpected intimacy of the gesture sent a jolt of surprise through her. She quickly composed herself, though her cheeks flushed with a faint blush.

Aldric released her hand with a broad grin, his eyes still locked with hers. "It's a pleasure to officially meet you," he said in a low tone.

Drawing upon years of practiced savoir-vivre, she maintained a neutral expression and replied, "The pleasure is mine."

"You are fortunate to have Kaiser as your father," the young King began their conversation with that, but his gaze shifted back to the Archduke. Adela pondered the appropriate response to what she perceived as an unusual compliment when he continued.

"So, you named her Adelaide," he spoke with a touch of melancholy.

"Yes," Kaiser replied, his expression devoid of humor.

Aldric's eyes arched with a subtle smile as he looked at her again, evoking a sense of familiarity that eluded Adela.

"A proud name for a proud woman. Do you know the origin of your name?" Aldric inquired.

She swallowed, unsure if the story she had been told about her name was true or not. Nevertheless, it was the only narrative she knew. "My mother... She lost a sister shortly before I was born. They named me Adelaide in her memory, but those close to me call me Adela."

Aldric's face lit up. "Adela," he said, appreciating both her name and nickname.

She had to redirect the conversation to a more familiar topic, seeking comfort in her ability to navigate it.

"Your Holiness was correct. Having the Archduke as my father is truly a blessing. We share a profound bond, and our pride in each other is unwavering," she expressed, leaning closer to her father's side.

"It seems we have that in common, for I too hold a deep connection with the Archduke and take great pride in knowing him," he warmly replied.

She returned his warm smile, but a conflicting sensation stirred within her despite the comfort she felt. There was an undeniable air of dark authority surrounding him, as if he had been shaped by countless battles and trials. But there was something else, not quite sinister but certainly not entirely benign.

Feeling the weight of Egon's gaze on her back, she pondered whether her apprehension stemmed from the mate bond they shared.

I suppose I will never truly know.

Interrupting her introspection, Aldric spoke once again.

"I would like to converse with your guests, Kaiser," Aldric expressed.

"Please do. Adela organized this gathering precisely for that purpose," Kaiser affirmed.

Aldric nodded, his deep blue eyes revealing a glimmer of appreciation. "In Varinthia, we acknowledge and honor the innate diplomatic prowess of our women. They possess a unique ability to bridge gaps and nurture relationships that transcend borders. Through their guidance, we navigate the intricate complexities of international affairs. I firmly believe in the influential power of women's voices in shaping a brighter future."

Adela was awestruck by his words. It sounded like a kingdom where women truly made a significant difference, unlike Emoira.

"I understand that our customs differ," his gaze briefly flickered to the soft rose hue of the sheer gloss on her lips. "In Varinthia, our men engage in battles while our women excel in diplomatic affairs. We believe that while our muscles may be mighty, the intellect of our women is mightier."

She bit her lip as a few older noble Emorians gasped, yet the king appeared unfazed by their reactions.

"With your father's permission, I would like to present a business proposal to you, Adela, but it can wait for now," the king suddenly shifted to a more serious tone. He glanced at the crowd once more. "I wish to engage in conversations with each of you. Our plans for Emoira are ambitious, but even the wisest ruler is ineffective without those who provide guidance and those who carry out the plans. I believe in sharing both the burdens and benefits of any interaction I pursue." Aldric placed an arm on Kaiser's shoulder. "I am honored to be in the land that birthed Kaiser de Lanark."

"If you wish to meet everyone, then let us proceed," Kaiser said, as he had never been one to relish public praise.

"Yes, please approach and introduce yourselves," Aldric half-smiled at Adela. "And do not forget to express your gratitude to your princess, one by one, before approaching me."

Adela's back burned with discomfort, and she found it challenging to discern her emotions regarding the situation. All she could do was go along with it.
