Huo Yao looked at Lin Shuwen wordlessly when she realized what had happened. "From the looks of it, your investigation was poorly done."2

Lin Shuwen detected a hint of sarcasm in Huo Yao's tone. He cleared his throat awkwardly and said, "I slipped up."

There was no point in explaining it further. His carelessness had resulted in this embarrassment and that was the fact. Moreover, He Xiaoman had accused him of corruption.

Huo Yao pursed her lips. Since Principal Yu was present there, she had to keep up her model student image, so she said sweetly, "Just to be clear, I am a Huo. From now on, don't make such mistakes ever again."

Lin Shuwen nodded. "It was my bad. Please forgive me."

Huo Yao stopped harping on the subject. Now that the show was over, she turned to look at Principal Yu. "I'm heading back to class."

The principal was still reeling in shock due to the events that just transpired. He simply acknowledged Huo Yao while he was in a daze.

Huo Yao nodded and turned to go back to class without casting a look at He Xiaoman.

Lin Shuwen had already wasted a lot of time on He Xiaoman. Since he was already done discussing work matters with the Principal, he and his colleague from the Department of Education proceeded to leave as well.

But He Xiaoman remained in a stupor. She watched everyone leave, with the things that Lin Shuwen had said reverberating in her ears.

If not for her foster daughter, Lu Corporation would not have even made the cut for vetting.

Also, they were given the opportunity for fast-track vetting purely on account of her foster daughter.

More importantly, he was trying to return a favor to Huo Yao and it had nothing to do with the Huo family.

What had her foster daughter done to deserve such a treatment from Secretary Lin?

He Xiaoman walked out of the campus dejectedly. She was holding her purse and her mind was in chaos.

He Xiaoman kept thinking about what had happened. Would Lu Corporation have had the chance of winning the bid if she did not have an estranged relationship with her foster daughter?

Lu Corporation might have even stood a chance to rise and become one of the top ten businesses in this city using Huo Yao's ties with the city government officials.

It was too late for all that now, and just the mere thought left her frightened and remorseful.

For a moment, He Xiaoman was genuinely filled with regret.

Judging from her foster daughter's attitude, she did not have a chance of repairing their relationship even if her mother had raised Huo Yao.

He Xiaoman was unclear how she made it back to the residence. Lu Hongwen finally came home after spending many days outside. The moment he saw He Xiaoman coming back with a sad look on her face, he frowned.

"What's with the long face?" Lu Hongwen sounded harsh.

He Xiaoman snapped out of her daze. She looked at Lu Hongwen and walked up to him quickly as though she did not catch what he said. Instead, she asked him. "How bad is the embezzlement in Lu Corporation?"

Lu Hongwen's face turned solemn the moment he heard her question. "What is this nonsense? Lu Corporation is in perfect shape."

He Xiaoman threw her designer purse on the couch. "Do you know why Lu Corporation did not make the cut for the bidding?"

Lu Hongwen sneered. "It was all because you suggested that we bribe Secretary Lin. You ruined our chances by pulling that tasteless stunt."

He Xiaoman exploded when she heard him continuing to push the entire blame on her.
