I don't want such daughter-in-law

Xi Ting was happy to see someone dote on his wife.0

The only person uncomfortable at the dining table was Madam Xi.

Recalling the photos that she received on her phone today, she turned pale and threw her fork and knife on the plate with a loud "Bam."

The wealthy households were very particular about table etiquette. The fundamental rule was that they shouldn't make unnecessary noises while eating.

Madam Xi grew up in a wealthy household and had known this since young. With the loud "Bam," everyone at the dining table halted their conversations. Everyone turned to look at her.

Old Madam raised her brows, "Wenpei, what are you doing?"

"Mom," Madam Xi picked up the napkin, wiped her mouth gently, and threw the napkin on the table. She looked sharply at Qin Yan and said coldly, "I just recalled something and have to say it now."

"If you have to say anything, say it after the meal," Old Madam was unhappy with her actions. With a displeased tone, she said, "Must you say it during the meal?"

Seeing Old Madam's expression, Madam Xi did not dare to continue.

But thinking back to what she saw, she mustered her courage and said coldly, "I have to say it now since everyone is around. I'm sorry for disturbing your meal, Mom, but this matter is very important."

Qin Yan felt Madam Xi turn to look at her. She lifted her head and saw the look of disgust and anger in Madam Xi's eyes. She had a bad feeling about this.

She knew that what Madam Xi wanted to say had something to do with her.

As she was thinking of this, Madam Xi asked coldly, "Qin Yan, are you hiding something from us?"

Qin Yan put down the juice she had just picked up. She turned her head to face Madam Xi, courteously said, "Mom, what matter are you referring to?"

Old Madam also put down her chopsticks, "Wenpei, what exactly are you talking about?"

Madam Xi scoffed at Qin Yan's calm composure, "The Xi Family isn't held back by old traditions. But as a prestigious family, we would still like our sons to marry someone of comparable social status. Even if they fall in love with someone from a small family, we will accept her as long as she's prim and proper."

She continued, "Sometimes, moral character is more important than family status. I hope I'm clear enough with my views. I'm not saying that the Qin and Xi families are incompatible. I'm not stopping you from dating Ah Ting. Although I don't ask for much, it doesn't mean that I don't have expectations."

With this, Madam Xi's expression changed, "Since you have decided to be with my son, you will be Xi family's madam in the future. You should be clear of your status, know how to behave, and not do anything that will damage our Xi family's reputation."

Madam Xi did not spare a thought for Qin Yan's feelings. She didn't even pretend to maintain harmony. The expression of others on the table changed.

Qin Yan's gaze met Madam Xi's sharp eyes. She was stunned for a few seconds. Guessing what the former was referring to, Qin Yan asked, "Mom, are you talking about…"

Seeing Qin Yan continue to feign ignorance, Madam Xi's expressions became worse. She threw her phone on the table which displayed the same pictures and videos which Xi Ting had received.

"Tell me, what is going on here?"

"Wenpei, what is this?" The Old Madam couldn't help but be shocked at this turn of events.

"What else could it be? Everything is clear in these pictures and videos. Mom, you have said that it would be fortunate if Ah Ting can find a wife no matter what background she comes from. As long as Ah Ting is happy, we have nothing much to ask for, and there's no need to marry someone of similar status."

"But…" Madam Xi again glared at Qin Yan with her sharp eyes, "I can look past my daughter-in-law's family status, but I cannot look past her character."

The meal couldn't continue with Madam Xi's words.

"Yan Yan, what exactly is going on?" Old Madam looked at Qin Yan tenderly. She did not believe Madam Xi's words. She had seen all types of people in her life. She trusted her own judgment. She believed her granddaughter-in-law was obedient and honest. She would definitely not do anything that would harm their family name.

There had to be some misunderstanding. She had never misjudged anyone before. Her grandson was also very clever and had good judgment. He wouldn't be with a promiscuous girl.

"Grandma, there's a misunderstanding."

Qin Yan was unfazed. She met Madam Xi's cold gaze and said politely, "It did not happen like that. Someone's sowing discord on purpose."

"Sowing discord?" Madam Xi did not trust Qin Yan at all, "There are pictures of you two together, and you still say there is a misunderstanding?"

"Mom, no, I…"

Just as Qin Yan wanted to explain, a voice beside her said solemnly, "I already know about this matter and this is indeed a misunderstanding. I know my Yan Yan's personality well. Mom, if you get any such news next time, please ask me first. You're scaring Yan Yan with your tone. I brought her home to strengthen our familial ties, not for her to feel aggrieved."

Finishing his sentence, Xi Ting reached out under the table and squeezed Qin Yan's hands. He showed his trust in her with his actions.

Seeing that, Madam Xi went pale with anger, "What misunderstanding? Just because she said this is a misunderstanding? Ah Ting, don't trust her too much. Do you think I'll be unreasonable and say this without any evidence? You trust an outsider over your own mother?"

Madam Xi was fuming. Her own son would rather believe the words of an outsider over hers. At this critical moment, he actually chose that woman and did not consider his own mother's feelings.

He had embarrassed her. She exploded with anger and did not have much rationality left. Out of spite, she said some words she had suppressed.

Old Madam's expression changed immediately upon hearing Madam Xi's words.

Xi Ting's eyes darkened too. Although his expression remained the same, his eyes were cold.

Xi Jung frowned. He didn't expect Madam Xi to say that. He always thought his mother was elegant, gentle, and knowledgeable. She had been educated well since young and would never say such hurtful and disrespectful words to someone.

These words were what other crude mothers-in-law would say. Saying her future daughter-in-law was an outsider was too hurtful.

"Wenpei, you've terribly disappointed me today! How can you say such words as a mother-in-law? Yan Yan will be married to Ah Ting and will be a part of the Mo family. How can you say she's an outsider!"

Madam Xi realized she shouldn't have said those words out of anger. But she wanted to maintain her stance. It was too late to take back her words.

She would also never apologize to her daughter-in-law. After all, she didn't feel like she had done anything wrong. How could she consider this scandalous girl as future madam of Xi family?

Since the words were out, Madam Xi didn't hold back, "Mom, how can we still consider her as Xi family's future daughter-in-law after she did such a disgraceful thing? So what if I don't see her as family? I don't want such a daughter-in-law."

"Enough," Old Madam hit the table. She said in anger, "Ah Ting already explained that it was just a misunderstanding. Yan Yan is his girlfriend. If it was true, do you think he'd act like this? Do you think he understands his partner less than you do?"

"You shouldn't give importance to such misunderstanding. Look, you've even ruined our dinner and made everyone uneasy just because you believed it."

"The family has enough troubles already. Are you doing this to create more trouble for all of us?"

"Grandma, don't be upset," Xi Jung said, immediately getting up and going to Old Madam's side. He started to pat her back, worried that she would get too agitated, "It's just a misunderstanding. Now that everything is explained properly, everything is fine."

"Mom," Xi Jung said with a frown after he coaxed Old Madam, "You must have misunderstood Sis-in-law. I believe she isn't someone that would do such things. Let's not talk about this anymore. She's a part of the family already. Stop addressing her as an outsider."

Even though everyone said to let this matter go, Madam Xi wasn't going to be reprimanded in such a manner in front of everyone.

She was the mother-in-law. Why couldn't she comment when her daughter-in-law was seen together with her ex-boyfriend in public?

Was she not allowed to ask? How did she wrong her daughter-in-law?

Qin Yan must be faking it. She wanted to ruin the relationship between her and her son.
