5.7 Looking For A Guide?

Lu Yizhou heard a pair of rapid footsteps approaching and the two guards saluted before the door promptly banged open in the next second, almost shaking the wall along with it in the process. A man — similar in age to Kai, Lu Yizhou surmised — in white coat strode in before he paused as he took in the scene inside the room. He had long, unruly hair that was tied in a low ponytail, androgynous features, stormy grey eyes and heavy eyebags that almost reached his cheeks. His frown turned into mild surprise as he saw Lu Yizhou standing on his two feet before a scowl overtook his features again. "It's not advisable to get up from bed yet in your current condition, General Kai."2

Oh, this must be the man that had brought him here and performed a surgery on him. Wyatt, Lu Yizhou recalled. 

He sat down and made himself comfortable on the bed before his broken leg decided to give up on him in the next second. A glance to the side told Lu Yizhou that the two spirit guides had disappeared. He got anxious again. Where had they gone to? Where was his lover? Lu Yizhou could smell him clearly from Doctor Wyatt so it meant they must be close enough for the scent to rub off on him, right? How did his lover get into the hospital? Was he injured? Lu Yizhou's jaws tightened as a ball of anxiety curled in his chest. Damn it, he should have digested the plot first instead of entertaining that stupid eagle. Look at where it got him!

"Calm down." Doctor Wyatt's commanding voice snapped him out of his thoughts. He looked up to see the doctor's hand bracing against something on his back pants and with his sight-sense, Lu Yizhou saw a familiar lump of a gun. "Calm yourself down, General Kai. Or else I will be forced to take drastic measures."

[666: Host, you're currently a three-senses dark sentinel that has just been rescued from death. Everyone is expecting you to expand your fourth sense in response to the danger. They are wary of you.]

In other words, they were scared that Lu Yizhou would suddenly turn morbid and unleashed a massacre on them, he hummed in understanding. 

Even without 666 elaborating, Lu Yizhou could clearly smell the growing apprehension from the two guards stationed in front of the door, similarly in a defensive stance in case Lu Yizhou suddenly sprung up from bed and pounced on them. He turned his gaze to Doctor Wyatt who, despite his vigilance, didn't show an ounce of fear. Instead, there was a sense of fortitude and serenity that radiated from him. Like a wave, it splashed against Lu Yizhou's skin and tickled him with the same emotions, and he felt his mind sobering up despite himself. Right, there was no need to be so anxious. He ought to take one step at a time.

"You're a guide." Lu Yizhou pointed out.

Tension bled out from Doctor Wyatt's shoulders and he let go of the gun to put his palm across his chest, bowing. "My name is Wyatt, rank S guide in charge of this hospital and your attending doctor. Pleased to make your acquaintances, General."

"Likewise." Lu Yizhou inclined his head slightly. "What happened to Lieutenant Yves?"

"He's alive but still hasn't regained consciousness yet." The corner of his lips twitched as if reminded of something unpleasant. "Unfortunately, he has developed his third sense and has to be monitored closely for a while. The hospital has taken the liberty to separate you two in case one of you is going feral and affects the other. But if you want to see him, I might be able to do something."

"There's no need." Not going to lie, he was a bit disappointed knowing that Yves survived the explosion but he was the main protagonist, after all. There was no way the simulator would let him die so easily.

Doctor Wyatt's eyebrows rose to his hairline. "Really? I can sense a faint disappointment from you, General. I can do something about that, if it means placating a bit of your worry. Bluntly speaking, I'm concerned that your condition will get worse if you keep holding your emotions in check so you might as well tell me everything in your mind. I am your doctor first and foremost before I am a guide, General."

Lu Yizhou's jaws shut with an audible click and he cursed inwardly. Damn it, here was an annoying guide that could perceive his emotion. He was practically a psychic and half a mind reader! Lu Yizhou had never let another human into his mind and all of a sudden, he felt terribly exposed like he was showing the most tender part of his belly to be prodded and poked. Gritting his teeth, he tried desperately to rein in his feelings, regardless of what the doctor had just said. [How do I make it stop?] 

[666: H—Host, mind barrier! Every dark sentinel can form a mind barrier to protect them from a guide's spiritual power! Wait a second uh— you only need to imagine erecting a shield that separates yourself from others.]

Lu Yizhou did just that, stacking layer upon layer of shields in front of him until not even a sliver of air could get through and judging from Doctor Wyatt's intrigued expression, it seemed like he succeeded in doing so. Expression betraying nothing, Doctor Wyatt inched closer with deliberate steps. "As expected of General Kai, you have a very strong control over your power, even more than the rumors made you out to be." Gesturing to the clipboard by the bed, he added. "I am going to check your vitals and stitches now."

He was really treated like a wild animal, wasn't he? Lu Yizhou wondered, both amused and exasperated. He nodded and in the next fifteen minutes, Doctor Wyatt always informed him what he was going to do before he proceeded. Lu Yizhou also got berated for getting his new stitches torn. Slowly, he found himself accustomed to the doctor's presence, especially when the man moved; the sweet, delectable scent would always waft into the tip of his nose. Lu Yizhou carefully lowered his eyelids so as to not let his turbulent emotions be seen. His lover, he was sure of it. The scent was a tad different from Oliver's pheromones; more delicate and mild with an earthy undertone, but the base note was unchanged. Lu Yizhou's body and soul would only react to one person and no power in any universe would be able to change that.

"How is your right eye?" Doctor Wyatt asked after he finished a series of tests and confirmed that Lu Yizhou's motoric system worked just fine.

Lu Yizhou blinked. Right eye? He brought his hand there only to find the soft gauze. Ah that's right. He had been too preoccupied with the spirit guides and the doctor's appearance to truly learn the extent of his injuries. As soon as he recalled the shattered biohazard mask and the glass fragment, his right eye gave a throb. No wonder he had been slow in noticing his spirit guide's presence even though it had been right by his bedside. No wonder he had felt something off with his vision. Lu Yizhou pursed his lips. "Is it damaged?"

"Yes," the doctor sighed in sympathy. "I'm sorry but the harm has been done by the time you're sent into the operation room."

Well, that was it. Losing one eye wasn't a big deal at all. He would rather lose an eye instead of a limb. It would be so inconvenient otherwise. "No need." He replied. "I am grateful that Doctor Wyatt has saved my life."

He was thinking as to how to casually ask about his lover without arousing suspicion when Doctor Wyatt suddenly asked. "General Kai, I have been informed that you were on your way to the Guides Association when the accident happened. Are you looking for a guide?"
