5.13 Don't Kill Each Other!
"Doctor Wyatt!" A flurry of footsteps approached him, followed by two nurses and a security guard. Upon finding him leaning weakly against the wall, they panicked. "Doctor Wyatt, are you okay?! Goodness, your neck…!"1
Wyatt knew that there would be hideous finger marks around his neck, especially when the sentinel didn't even hesitate to block his airway, his eyes were cold in silent determination to kill. Wyatt had never seen him before, which was a weird thing because rank A sentinels in the world could be measured in two digits and there was no way they could avoid going to hospital at some point of a time. Their medical reports must have been archived in the hospital and coincidentally, one of Wyatt's favourite pastimes to do was to skim through medical reports like he was reading a very interesting novel.
More importantly, why…? Why did a sentinel want to kill him? He didn't seem like holding a grudge, more like… like someone ordered him to do so.
Wyatt coughed a while more as the nurse went to open the windows to let fresh air in. He was still reeling in shock from both the near death experience and General Kai's bizarre appearance. Right, General Kai! He grabbed the security guard's arm, his expression almost frenzied. "Where is General Kai? Have you seen him on your way here?!"
"No." He replied gravely. "Actually I am on the way to search for him because it seems like the fire originated from his room and also…" He hesitated, creases appearing between his brows. "There are four unknown rank A sentinels tied in the room, unconscious with a varying degree of burn wounds. They are not the patients in the hospital."
Chills ran down Wyatt's spine as everything suddenly clicked in his mind. The thoughts in his mind flashed by faster than the speed of light to the point where his entire body went still to catch up with his brain. Those people were coming to assassinate General Kai and him, he realized in dread. For what? As for the clear reason, he could slowly investigate it later but more importantly, the fact that an assassination attempt had happened in the hospital, even more in a secluded ward where he treated unstable sentinels, was solid and true. It was an exclusive ward that only the government and a few higher-ups knew and that's why he had been cautious and only allowed his most trusted people in.
However, not only did the assailants know General Kai's precarious state enough to take advantage of that, they also knew the layout of the ward. Wyatt's face turned somber at that. Someone on his side must have defected.
And General Kai…
"We have to find him." Wyatt ordered with gravity in his tone. General Kai had awakened his special abilities in response to the attack. Wyatt couldn't imagine what kind of state his mind was in right now. "Inform the control room. He couldn't have gone too far. Now!"
The security guard nodded and talked to his walkie-talkie. It didn't take long until they found out where General Kai had gone because there was no way for them not to notice the appearance of a man surrounded by fire. When Wyatt heard the answer, he swayed on his feet and would have fainted if the situation had allowed him to do so. Instead, he took a deep breath and tried to regulate his emotions. It came to him as easily as breathing. As a trained guide, he had been repeating the ritual daily for decades. Slowly, he calmed down even though his mind was still running a hundred miles per second.
Why was General Kai heading toward where 000 was?! And one more thing, 000 was inherently a vigilant and detached guide. Usually, if such a thing happened — not that the hospital was caught on fire that often, but you got Wyatt's point — he would prefer to lock his door and holed himself in it, uncaring of the turmoil outside. He wouldn't budge from his place unless the building collapsed. Yet the personnel in the control room reported that 000 had personally come out of his room?!
He did nothing other than standing, staring straight into the hallway as if… he had been expecting General Kai's arrival. How could that be possible?!
Wyatt had indeed entertained the idea to let the sentinel and guide meet somewhere in the future to see how far their compatibility with each other went but he didn't mean in this kind of setting and time! 000 had a violent nature and was still unprepared to meet a stranger and worse, General Kai's condition…
A curse slipped out of Wyatt's mouth. "I will be going there. Please send a small reinforcement my way! Prepare to deal with a feral guide and sentinel!" After leaving that one sentence, he forced his weak knees to work and ran as fast as he could.
Please… Wyatt prayed desperately. Please don't kill each other until I get there!
He skidded to a halt right on the corner where 000's room was in time to see General Kai's back facing him. His tall and broad stature had almost engulfed 000 in front of him but Wyatt could see from the position of their feet that 000 was… standing quite close to the General? A strange expression flickered in Wyatt's face. 000 allowed General Kai to get close to him?
The words died down in his throat and he found himself unable to move, unable to speak as he witnessed the proceedings between the two. Why were they just standing there staring at each other? Could it be… Wyatt hadn't decided what to do yet when all of a sudden, an influx of riotous emotions flowed in the air. So strong and violent that it almost knocked Wyatt unconscious. Not only from one person, but two. He sucked in a sharp breath as 000's feelings surged into him uncontrollably and he found himself tearing up despite having no idea why. His heart squeezed at the sheer depth and intensity of feelings that 000 projected and in the next second, he heard General Kai speak, his voice so faint that Wyatt almost missed it. "Terra…"
T—Terra?! Wyatt's eyes flew open in shock. Was that 000's name? No, how could General Kai know it?!
000 — or Terra — surprised him by suddenly collapsing and General Kai caught him in time before he could hit the ground. "Terra!" Came the general's urgent inquiry. "Are you okay?!"
