7.54 Avenge His Family
Kaede returned to the group of expectant men, eyes burning in excitement as soon as they laid upon him. "Did Boss say something? Had he given the green signal?" 0
"Can we march straight to the Cobalt Fang's basecamp?"
"This is a crucial time! Previously we were not sure whether Zion Tenley was still alive or not so we didn't dare to act. But now it's been confirmed that his life is in danger, whether he will be able to pull through depends on him and him alone! Their entire clan is already in shambles. Isn't this the best time to act?"
"We have to thank Aiden for that! If not for him, we wouldn't be able to get this kind of golden opportunity! Eh, you…" The men's faces abruptly changed when they saw what was in Kaede's hand. "Why are you still holding onto the antidote? Quickly give it to Boss otherwise Aiden's condition will get worse!"
Kaede's patience suddenly snapped. "Do you think I don't want to hand it over to him?!"
Heavy silence reigned between them at Kaede's sudden outbursts. Moshe's men were dumbfounded, even more so when Kaede suddenly rubbed his face roughly. One of them couldn't hold back and asked, "Eh, Kaede, are you… crying?"
"I think you need to get your eyes gouged! Who the fuck is crying?!" Kaede hollered with dampness on the corner of his eyes. His face was so red and the veins that popped out of his neck looked mildly concerning. Kaede breathed heavily as he glared at the antidote in his hands. "I knew it…" He said in a low voice. "I knew since the first time we saw him that Boss' attitude toward him was different."
"K—Kaede…?"
Kaede couldn't understand. This was the opportunity they had been desperately searching for years. The morale of Cobalt Fang's men were at an all time low after the mishap that happened to their leader. There was no better time than now if they wanted to drag them down once and for all. Everyone could see it clearly but why couldn't Moshe?! Instead of taking over the situation, he… he chose to lock himself inside the room with that man and do God-knows-what!
Kaede couldn't help but tear up when he recalled Moshe before he met Aiden. He was merciless, competent and brilliant. A perfect leader thorough and thorough. Now though…
"Kaede, what should we do?"
"Should we act without the Boss' command? Did he look like he was going to appear anytime soon?"
Kaede shook his head, lost for words as to how to explain to Moshe's men that their Boss had finally surrendered his heart and put someone above his clan, his legacy, his loyal men… and even his own life. Everyone was feeling perplexed. They had clearly seen Moshe's state when he returned bringing with him a delirious Aiden. Not to mention the men, that was the first time Kaede had seen his Boss look so scared and distraught. He hadn't even put on such a look when his father was killed in front of him!
Moshe almost didn't take his eyes off Aiden whilst Kaede was examining him. The cold-hearted Moshe was showing a lot of emotions, it was unsettling. To be a leader meant that he had to command a lot of people with a cool head and if his head was already clouded with emotions, then could he still become a leader…?
Many people went out of their way to get rid of their weakness. Right… for example Zion who chose to kill his whole family. It sounded merciless but Kaede actually admired the man's callousness. Having someone by Moshe's side would only be a liability and if their enemy found out then… it would mean instant death.
"We will wait." Kaede forced out through gritted teeth. It pained him down in his solar plexus to sit still and watch the chaos brew without dipping his hands in it. But Kaede had been working by Moshe's side for the longest. He was willing to put his life down for Moshe's sake, let alone supporting his decision.
If there came a day when Aiden proved to be his weakness, well… Kaede had no choice but to take the matter into his own hands.
Everyone was disappointed but there was nothing they could do. Still, they waited for two more hours outside in case Moshe somehow changed his mind and decided to come out. When he didn't appear either, they were disheartened and finally dispersed. A crowd of people scattered under the night, no one noticed that a certain someone was sneaking into a totally different direction.
It was Ezra, the man whom Lu Yizhou had taken down when he escaped on the first day as well as the one who had guided Lu Yizhou to Moshe's private room.
Getting into the car, he drove to an inconspicuous complex where a lot of old apartments were lined up and parked under one of them. His movement was quick and decisive as he strode into the dark and desolate lobby, proof that it wasn't the first time he had come here. He bit his nails as he waited for the elevator to take him to the sixth floor, anxious and jittery.
Even when deep in thought, he made his way through the narrow hallway with the ease of someone who had ingrained every nook and cranny to mind. And when he finally arrived at a certain door and found the person he was seeking for inside, he couldn't hold back anymore from accusing, "You said you're only going to teach Moshe a lesson! And now what, Aiden almost died… just like your Boss!"
Tsiiing! A knife flew past his head, slamming deep into the door behind him until only the hilt could be seen. In an instant, Ezra froze in place and his face became as pale as a sheet. His knees faintly trembled. D—Damn it, he got too deep inside his own head that he had forgotten whom he was dealing with!
"Don't talk about my Boss with your shitty mouth," came a voice so gravelly it seemed to have been forced out of the deepest recess of Hell. He was standing by the window, his silhouette illuminated by the street lamp outside, rendering Ezra unable to see his current expression.
Even then, shivers ran down Ezra's spine and he gulped. "I—I apologize. But still—"
"It's no one's fault but the one who went to the event with my Boss. Regius, Moshe's former boytoy. I have let Moshe's men have him, are you still not satisfied?" Hector, Zion's right hand man, stepped away from the window and stalked toward Ezra who was frozen by the doorway. Their heights didn't actually differ by much, but Hector was wide and muscular as Ezra was slender. And when Hector stood in front of him like that, he looked pitifully dominated. "All you tell me is that Aiden is his fucking pet… so what was wrong with messing with him?"
Ezra screwed his eyes shut by reflex when Hector lifted his hand… to pull out the knife stuck on the door. He played with the weapon with his dexterous fingers, eyes gleaming sharply amidst the dark.
"Answer me!!!" Hector suddenly slammed his fist right beside Ezra's head with an ear-splitting bang, so close that he could smell the breeze of death brushing on the tip of his nose. "He is only a pet, so what's wrong if he died huh?!"
Ezra's breath stuttered to a halt. M–Mad Dog, he cried out inwardly. This man's temperament really suited his title!
Ezra cowered even more, shaking in fear. "No... No, you aren't wrong there. I–I come to tell you something i–important. I have confirmed it with my own eyes. Boss— I mean, Moshe's relationship with his pet is truly unusual." At Hector's intrigued look, Ezra received a burst of courage to straighten up and finish his sentence. "I am sure of it! Even now, Moshe chose to stay with him instead of launching an attack on your clan! He might even be in love with his pet!"
"Love." Hector spelled the word as if it was a parasite, a gum sticking to the sole of his shoe. In disgust and derision. "Love…" He surprised Ezra by suddenly breaking into guffaws. Ezra shrunk his neck and tried to avoid Hector's spit that was flying all over the place.
"I–Is that important enough? You… You will really guarantee Moshe's suffering, right?" His lips trembled as blazing hatred flashed through his eyes. At that moment, the weak Ezra actually looked a little menacing. "I don't care if I have to die. That bastard must suffer a life worse than death! Only then will I be able to avenge my innocent family whom he has brutally killed!"
"Sure…" Hector drawled out with a vicious smirk. "But before that, there is one more thing I need you to do."
