7.61 We Can Only Wait
Meanwhile, the Cobalt Fang's basecamp was currently shrouded in a heavy atmosphere.2
Tens of men surrounded every corner of the building, their faces somber. Even the servants didn't dare to say a peep, opting to do their work hastily with their head lowered. The security in the basecamp increased ten folds overnight, all due to the unknown fate of their leader.
The doctors who had been invited to this place all came to the same conclusion.
"I apologize… I can't seem to pinpoint the problem in Mr. Tenley's body."
"There's no definite explanation for what is happening to Mr. Tenley right now."
"I apologize…"
"Useless fools!" Two consecutive shots were fired to the wall, and the doctors shrunk in fear, trembling. "What's the use of you lots living if you can't even treat him?!" Hector's face was almost purple due to anger, veins bulging out of his neck. If not because he didn't want to add unnecessary strife with the government at times like these, he would have shot these doctors as soon as the word 'sorry' was uttered from their mouths!
The more he looked at the doctors' faces, the more irritated he was. "Scram! All of you, get lost!"
No need to be told twice, they dashed out of the room with wind on their feet.
"Reign in your temper, Mad Dog. Mr. Tenley's condition is getting better."
Hector swiveled to point his gun at the man beside Zion's bed who was currently examining him. "You…" He gnashed his teeth. "You're the one I should kill first. You are the one who has created this fucking drug! If something happens to Boss, I won't let you have an easy death!"
The man chuckled wryly, a hint of apprehension flashed in his eyes; albeit compared to the bunch of doctors earlier, he was very calm and composed. He was none other than Cruz, the one who had treated Zion when he was injured by Moshe's ambush, as well as Regius' sexy, illegal doctor.
"Think about it. Don't you think something is off?" Cruz stared at the MRI scan of Zion's brain, contemplating. "We have tested this drug on more than a hundred people but none of them have the same effect as Mr. Tenley. There's actually nothing wrong with him. I have injected the antidote and his blood has been cleared of the drug, but his brain activity shows that he's currently in a coma. Why?"
Hector pressed the muzzle of the gun closer to Cruz's temple, his teeth gnashing. "I don't want to know. It's your fucking responsibility!"
If Cruz had not feared that the Mad Dog would open fire because of his volatile temper, he would have rolled his eyes. Talking with this brute was no use. Like his nickname, he was a crazy beast. And now, without its master, the crazy beast was on the verge of pouncing on other people as he pleased.
"We can only wait." When his words seemed to flame Hector's temper even more, Cruz promptly added. "You can't kill me. Like you have said, I am the one who created the drug. Nobody knows its exact composition except me. If you kill me, then you won't have anyone to go to if a mishap occurs."
Hector's arms were trembling from the force he used to restrain himself. His fingers shook on the trigger, eyes boring down on the audacious man in front of him. "How dare you…!"
Cruz heaved a sigh and asked instead, "Your men are monitoring Moshe's mansion right? How is his pet's condition?"
"Do you think we will get something at times like these?" Hector scoffed incredulously. "Moshe has his men surrounding every fucking corner of the mansion. You'd think that he is the one who has gotten drugged instead! The little rat is right, Moshe's relationship with that man is indeed unusual. Why did you have to go and give them the antidote? You should just slip poison in and let him die!"
This time, Cruz couldn't not roll his eyes. Idiot, he cursed inwardly. "Do you hear what you're saying? Moshe's relationship with his pet is unusual. If he dies after the antidote is injected into him, what do you think Moshe will do? With Mr. Tenley's condition, do you think you can hold the fort if Moshe himself comes to raze the basecamp to the ground?"
The muscles on Hector's face spasmed. As much as he hated to admit it, the doctor was right. Moshe wasn't his Boss' nemesis for nothing. If he had only been a pretty face, then Zion wouldn't have ended up like this.
He turned his gaze to the unconscious and pale Zion, and his chest burned with flames of revenge that almost burned his mind into bits. One should know when to retreat when the situation called for it, was the first thing Zion instilled into him because Hector often didn't know when to stop when it came to hunting his enemy down.
He was Zion's right hand man. Everyone was relying on him to keep a cool head. Slowly, he lowered his gun and slammed his fist to the nearest wall, chest heaving in rage.
"Moshe is currently busy dealing with his pet, he won't have time to come our way at least for a few days." Cruz concluded when he saw that he had managed to smack a little sense into Hector's hella thick head. "I estimate that Mr. Tenley will wake up in a few days. All we can do is wait. Until then…" He patted Hector's chest in mock camaraderie and sauntered away. "You'd better think twice before you act, Mad Dog."
Hector's lips twitched into a terrifying smile. Did that man seriously think that Hector could wait? He wasn't nicknamed Mad Dog for no reason, for fuck's sake. The longer he went without his owner, the wilder he would become.
"Hey," Hector turned sideways to offer him a provoking smirk. "You're going to abandon your lover boy just like that? Who knows what kind of fate he will go through in Moshe's hands."
Cruz halted in his tracks but didn't turn around. He merely let out a chuckle. "Who says he's my lover? Just a little pretty thing that is nice to fuck around with. Even if he is my lover, is he more important than my own life?"
"He is the only reason why you can become Boss' personal medic and now, he will die because of your drug, how tragic!" Hector's wild cackles trailed along Cruz's back until he disappeared from sight.
The Mad Dog's laughter quickly subsided and he turned to his owner, a manic glint surfaced in his dark, fathomless eyes. "No matter what others say, I will avenge you. Please wait for my good news, Boss." After saying that, he turned on his heels and exited the room.
The heartbeat monitor fluctuated slightly and Zion's eyelids twitched.
