9.6 Genius And Freak
[666: A–Aye aye, Host!]0
God knew how relieved he was when the familiar prompt appeared in front of his eyes. He had suffered enough already moving blindly in the previous simulation, dancing on the tip of death again and again and almost failing to save the villain. Lu Yizhou's tense shoulders relaxed. As long as he had the original plot, then everything would be easier.
He directed another glare at the zombies nearby out of spite and sat down to digest the plot.
To no one's surprise, this world was an apocalypse modern world.
Just like any other apocalypse stories, the problems originated from an error in the government's secret project regarding genetic sequence. At first, they planned to study the animals' and plants' recovery rate. Despite not being the top of the food chain, animals and plants had their own special way to hasten their cell generation.
For example, axolotl, a species of aquatic salamander, had the "superpower" of regenerating its limbs, spinal cord, heart, and other organs. Flatworms and hydra, for instance, could regrow their entire bodies from only a tiny piece of their original selves. Even among vertebrates (animals that do have spines), the axolotl wasn't the only animal capable of regeneration. Young frogs were known to regrow limbs, though they lost this ability when they changed from tadpoles to adult frogs. On the other hand, the axolotl retained it throughout its entire life, making it unique among vertebrates and a great model to study in regeneration field.
If this research succeeded, then not only would it become a once-in-a-century breakthrough in the medical field, but humans could also reach immortality!
For this research, the government put together all the brilliant and renowned researchers in the country and dumped a huge sum of money to fuel the experiment.
Alas, as the saying went, man proposed and God disposed.
Not only was the research an utter failure, but something happened midway to the experiment object's cells. They underwent mutation and their behaviour became one akin to rabid dogs, greedy for flesh and blood and for some reason, they were very hard to kill because of their enhanced gene segment.
Through a series of events, the experiment object bit one of the researcher's hand and the 'virus' multiplied from thereon. The entire research facility was wiped out and the people who knew best about this experiment were turned to zombies…
…except for the villain of this world, Zhao Bolin.
He dedicated all of his life to research about genetic recombination and at the same time, he was also the youngest professor of Biology Department in F University. One could say that Zhao Bolin was a genius but at the same time, he was also a bizarre freak who did not play by rules.
Even though he was only 28 years old, he was actually the best person to lead the government's project. Alas, Zhao Bolin, this freak, was unmoved by the promise of immortality and the riches he would amass by this one project. He liked his peace and quiet, and he had also been accustomed to be rhythm of university. Rather than being hailed as a God of Immortality, he preferred to stay out of the radar and tinkered with his miscellaneous experiments. Nobody understood how this freak's brain was wired and he did not intend for anybody to understand either.
His peace lasted until the disaster struck.
Now that the whole world was gradually occupied by zombies, the government — who had been pissing in their pants — belatedly realized that there was a genius hermit hidden in F University! After one thing and another, Zhao Bolin was respectfully 'invited' to become the leading researcher in the seek of antidote.
Invited, my ass, Lu Yizhou sneered. He must have been threatened.
Nonetheless, Zhao Bolin was not the kind of person who would take this lying down. Even when the government pressured him, Zhao Bolin always had a way to return the courtesy twofolds. He agreed to lead the experiment. But he had two ironclad conditions;
First, the experiment must be conducted in F University and the members must be personally chosen by him. Zhao Bolin disliked the atmosphere in the military basecamp and he disliked those hypocritical people in the government even more. If he had to work, then he'd rather do it in the environment that set him at ease.
Second, everyone had to listen to his order. Not even the commander of the army or the president himself could tell him what to do.
Everyone was speechless when they heard of these arrogant conditions.
But… But Zhao Bolin was their only hope during the helplessness! No matter how enraged they were, they still had to grit his teeth and clutch onto him like a last straw. A few prominent members of the government convened a meeting and reluctantly agreed with Zhao Bolin's unreasonable demands.
But they also had to put in a condition as well so as to not let Zhao Bolin trample all over their faces. They wanted the antidote to be created within half a year.
Instead of intimidated, Zhao Bolin merely sneered, "When the time comes, let's all go to hell, eh?"
Those first-class researchers, who had become zombies by now, could not even achieve a breakthrough after years of experimenting and the government wanted him, a solo fighter, to create antidote in half a year? Dream on!
Just in a few short sentences, Lu Yizhou could already picture how his lover was in this world. Arrogant, willful yet charming and brazen. The corner of his lips curled and soft purr rumbled out of his throat. Alas, the person himself did not seem to realize his own reaction and continued reading.
Zhao Bolin's research team was only filled with five people, including himself. They were his graduate students, the so-called researchers who were still wet behind the ears.
One of them was the protagonist of this world, aka the shou, Li Zhu.
Being chosen as the elite member of Professor Zhao's research team was akin to a dream come true to him. He admired the professor very much. His positive, youthful mentality made him one of the people whom Zhao Bolin trusted to work with.
And hence, the hope of the world commended in the F University. The military gradually moved their basecamp there and created a strong barrier to provide a conducive environment for Professor Zhao.
Just like that, time flashed by and the research actually went quite smoothly under Professor Zhao's guidance.
Zhao Bolin disliked to interact with people in the military and everytime he wanted to send a report, he would order Li Zhu, who had the most likable personality, to go. Who could have guessed that this prolonged interaction would lead to the blossoming romance between Li Zhu and the commander of the army, Yang Tengfei?
One was a pure-hearted and shy researcher while the other was a cool and domineering army commander. Truly… a love story worth of the protagonists.
