9.20 Commander Yang Tengfei
The next morning, Lu Yizhou received news from his minions that they had failed to hold Commander Yang Tengfei back. He had expected it, after all the other party was a capable soldier and a protagonist to the boot. He only wished to delay Commander Yang until he managed to successfully infiltrate Zhao Bolin's group and hence, he ordered his minions to retreat.1
After the incident today, the remaining eight people were the ones who were depicted in the original plot, meaning that there should be no threat from Zhao Bolin's side anymore. Lu Yizhou was satisfied.
Now was the time to deal with the two protagonists.
Although Li Zhu claimed to believe Lu Yizhou's bullshit yesterday, he could tell that Li Zhu was becoming more suspicious of him for some reason. Lu Yizhou tried to act like usual as he had no idea what had triggered the other's doubt.
By usual, he meant sticking to Zhao Bolin all day long, acting like his shadow even as Zhao Bolin went to the bathroom. After the suicide feat Zhao Bolin attempted when he braved through the crowd of zombies, Lu Yizhou confirmed that Zhao Bolin actually cared for him deep down, perhaps even more than he thought if he could disregard his own safety just for saving Lu Yizhou. Albeit touched, Lu Yizhou could not help but get angry and hence, he decided to teach the little leopard a lesson.
"Why are you following me again?!" Zhao Bolin asked angrily, his fur bristling. He was ready to pull down his zipper when he discovered that Lu Yizhou was leaning against the door frame and staring at him with that deep gaze of his. As a result, Zhao Bolin almost got a heart attack in front of the urinal stall. This man did not make any sound at all, just like a ghost! Scared people to death!
The corner of Lu Yizhou's lips curled lazily. [If not you, then who should I follow?]
"Just…" Zhao Bolin sputtered. "Just follow someone else!"
Lu Yizhou raised a brow. Even though he did not move, his question was clearly written on his expression. [Are you sure?]
Zhao Bolin glowered like a kitten with his claws out. "What do you mean by this, Student Lu? No matter what, I am still a professor! This behavior of yours has really crossed the line!" Even though he delivered such an indignant speech, his reddened cheeks and darting eyes had given him away, reducing his momentum by half.
Lu Yizhou was ready to tease him further when his ears caught the faint sound of motor blades. Commander Yang Tengfei was heading here; he was much faster than Lu Yizhou expected he would take. How troublesome... Lu Yizhou pressed his lips together but that second of inattention had caught Zhao Bolin's eyes.
His expression grew alert. "What's wrong?"
Lu Yizhou shook his head and smiled. Then before Zhao Bolin could say anything, he reached out to muss up the other's hair and swiftly took his exit. Behind, Zhao Bolin's face was blank for a moment. When he registered what Lu Yizhou had done, it was already too late, he had disappeared somewhere else. "Bastard!" The distinguished and elegant Professor Zhao could not help but curse a certain student's rogue ways.
When Zhao Bolin came out after finishing his business, he found the students sticking to the window and discussing something excitedly.
"Professor Zhao!" The students beckoned him closer. "It's the army! They're really heading here this time!" As he spoke, the sound of helicopter blades drew closer and closer until they could feel the air vibrating along with it.
The students opened the window and waved enthusiastically. "Here, over here! We are here!"
"Oh thank God, we are finally saved!"
The zombies in the university were attracted by the noise and rushed out of the building like ants coming out of the nests. Their number was overwhelming. Alas, they could do nothing but stretched out their hands upward because the helicopter was merely hovering in midair. Soon thereafter, gunshots were heard.
"Good evening, everyone." A man with a deep voice spoke through the speakerphone. "We are from the Second Battalion of the Special Forces. All survivors, we need you to cooperate with us. Please stay where you are. My comrades will come down in a while to bring everyone to safety. I repeat, please stay where you are and wait for our arrival."
The students cried and hugged each other. "We're saved! We're truly saved!"
Amidst the darkness, a ray of hope finally shone down on them. Even though these university students tried to keep up a hopeful outlook, a series of incidents that had happened these past few days had really worn them out, both physically and mentally. A respected Professor betrayed them, their classmates and friends either died or turned into zombies… They were actually so close to breaking down. Now that help had finally arrived, they could not help but break down in tears, even the male students were crying out loud.
Contrary to them, Lu Yizhou who was leaning against the wall with no expression on his face and Zhao Bolin who had a frown on his face, looked especially out of place.
Zhao Bolin glanced at the man and could not help but approach him. He asked in a quiet voice. "Aren't you happy?"
Even if someone beat Lu Yizhou to death, he still could not cry freely like these people did, especially after transforming into a zombie. He felt like some metabolism in his body had been broken. He no longer sweated and he did not need to drink much water as well. He only kept up the appearance just in case. To Zhao Bolin's question, he asked instead, [What about you?]
He did not expect Zhao Bolin to answer honestly. "It's strange. The Special Forces… they have a lot of work to do. Protect the President, the parliament, those high ranking members in the governments, building a basecamp, doing damage control etc. All of them are more important than evacuating a bunch of students from an ordinary university. This is only the third day of the outbreak and I don't believe that they have already built a stable basecamp. So… what are they doing here?"
As expected of my man, Lu Yizhou thought with a tinge of pride. He smiled and could not help but hint at the other. [Of course, they're here because there is something more important than the lives of those people as well as doing damage control. What do you think it is?]
Zhao Bolin's heart sank and his expression grew heavy. "Do you know something?"
Lu Yizhou spread his hands and put on an innocent look.
Just as the announcement declared, soldiers jumped down from the helicopter and landed on the top of the nearest buildings. From afar, bursts of cheers could be heard from the survivors in other buildings. The students grew more excited. The Biology Building did not have stairs to the rooftop and hence, they could only open the window as wide as possible to let the soldiers come down from above.
Five soldiers maneuvered their way inside, clad in protective gear from head to toe whilst carrying guns. The students stared at them with fervent eyes filled with tears. "Thank you for coming for us! Thank you!"
A tall man who looked like their leader stepped forward and pulled up his helmet. His eyes were razor sharp and seemed to carry an invisible pressure that calmed the rowdy crowd. "Is Professor Zhao here?"
Eyes immediately turned to Zhao Bolin.
Thanks to Lu Yizhou's hint, Zhao Bolin had already expected this and thus, he was not too surprised. He lifted his chin and crossed his arms over his chest. "Who are you?"
When dealing with someone other than Lu Yizhou, Professor Zhao actually looked quite intimidating. He had a penchant for putting on an indifferent look that made people feel like he was looking down on them. Alas, this time it was not an act because he truly disliked dealing with the army.
The man was not offended by Zhao Bolin's curt tone. He had more or less heard about the professor's infamous reputation. He walked forward and gave a standard military salute. "It's an honor to meet you, Professor Zhao Bolin. I am Yang Tengfei, the Commander of the Special Forces." Commander Yang stared into Zhao Bolin's eyes and said earnestly, "I am here on behalf of the government as well as the entire humanity, imploring you to lead the research to create an antidote for the outbreak we are facing right now."
