9.28 Drone's Footage
Zhao Bolin slid open the door and made sure to put on an annoyed look to let Yang Tengfei know how unwelcomed his presence was. "What do you want?" He had completely forgotten that if not for Commander Yang's timely arrival, he wouldn't have been able to launch a sneak attack on Lu Yizhou.2
Yang Tengfei paused. Zhao Bolin might have tidied his appearance before he came out, but the sharp commander's eyes could still spot a few strangeness. The rims of his eyes were abnormally red and there were deep creases on his white lab coat which were not there before. Yang Tengfei surreptitiously glanced over and saw chaffed marks around Professor Zhao's wrists that had started to turn blue.
Almost in an instant, a million conjectures appeared in Commander Yang's mind, one was wilder than the other, featuring a secret deal between a certain student and a certain professor which involved sexual intimacy and pleasure.
For the first time ever, Yang Tengfei's mind went blank in shock and he forgot what he was going to say. He had already heard how eccentric this person was but never had he expected that he would not even let go of a student!
So this was the reason why he chose Lu Yizhou out of everyone… Who knew what kind of scandalous thing these two were playing behind the closed door? If this kept on, would the antidote be ready in time?!
A hint of regret prickled Yang Tengfei's heart. If he knew this kind of thing was going to happen, he should have made the student named Li Zhu stay behind to supervise the progress of the experiment! Was it too late to summon the helicopter back?
"Hey." Zhao Bolin snapped his fingers in front of the frowning commander's face. Just one glance he could tell that this person was up to no good. "If there's nothing, then you should scram." Professor Zhao clicked his tongue. "I was getting to the good part of the experiment when you came knocking on the door."
The frown on Yang Tengfei's forehead deepened and at the same time, he was rendered speechless by this professor's shamelessness. Daring to expose his own sexual activity so freely, how thick this person's face was? Commander Yang's impression toward him plunged deeper down and he could not help but warn in a low, threatening voice, "I hope Professor Zhao will take this project seriously. You can play however you want after that and nobody will care. But at this moment, I expect your full attention and time."
Professor Zhao's mind was filled with confusion. What kind of nonsense was this man spouting? He did not take it to heart and sneered, "Well, should I remind you who is the one distracting me now?"
Commander Yang harrumphed coldly. "Fret not, I will leave as soon as I ask a question." He then proceeded to take out a tablet and show it to Zhao Bolin. It recorded the surveillance footage of the CCTVs all over the country. The time stamp was yesterday noon. "Do you have any idea what could have caused this to happen?"
Professor Zhao snatched the tablet from his hands and scrutinized the screen closely. "What is this?" He mumbled under his breath. This was the first time he had seen this footage as he had been trapped here from the very first day of the virus outbreak. Through the tablet, Zhao Bolin watched as countless zombies were moving in unison as if they were trained soldiers. They were heading in one direction — F University.
Almost in an instant, realization dawned on Zhao Bolin but he quickly adjusted his expression because Yang Tengfei was watching his reaction closely.
This time stamp and the abnormal zombies behavior — all of them coincided with the time Lu Yizhou joined their group! Yes, there was no mistaking it, Zhao Bolin was sure that this should have happened after Lu Yizhou was bitten and mutated into a superior zombie. Or in other words, all of the zombies were responding to him!
"Do you know something?" Yang Tengfei asked in suspicion. To be honest, he had long suspected that this had something to do with Zhao Bolin. If not him, was there anyone else who could attempt something like that? However, it was only his speculation and he had no proof to support it. He had intended to take this advantage to scout for information to determine how he would act in the future? If this abnormal phenomenon was really caused by Zhao Bolin…
"Hmm… interesting." Zhao Bolin showed an appropriate measure of intrigue and bewilderment. No matter what, he could not let anyone know about Lu Yizhou's true identity! "Can I take this with me? I want to analyze it further."
So it was not him? Albeit a little skeptical, Yang Tengfei showed nothing on his face and nodded curtly. He had no business left and thus, leaving one last reminder for Zhao Bolin not to slack off, he turned away and went down the stairs.
"Hmph, acting so high and mighty." Professor Zhao rolled his eyes in disdain. "If I create the antidote, you have to grovel under my feet to receive that!"
.
Yang Tengfei arrived on the fourth floor to hear his subordinates' excited voices. Still with a displeased furrow between his brows from the conversation with Zhao Bolin, he demanded gravely, "Keep your volume down if you don't want to attract zombies here."
The soldiers immediately straightened up upon seeing him. They performed a standard salute, though their eyes were still shining in excitement. "Commander, look at this nerdy's invention!"
It was then that Commander Yang realized there was a non-soldier between them. It was a short, thin and bespectacled male student. After not taking a bath for three days, there was an indescribable odor emanating from him and his face was so greasy that oil could be squeezed out of it. Commander Yang subtly took a step back. "You are…?"
"I am not a nerdy!" The male student rebuked, then pushed up his thick glasses typical of a nerd.
This male student was surnamed Huang. When the disaster struck, he and a few friends were having a nap in the Robotic Club's classroom and hence, had been stuck there for the past three days. Fortunately, the Robotic Club was filled with slag students who, despite the rule clearly forbidding food and drinks, still secretly stashed them in a secret place. It barely sustained their hunger and all of the biological needs were also solved there. One could imagine how much of a pigsty the clubroom had become. It was no wonder that he smelled so bad…
Student Huang was a robot enthusiast. Even before the outbreak, he was already working on a side project to create a remotely controlled drone. In the end, the disaster turned into a fuel amidst desperation and Student Huang unknowingly finished his project.
He was proudly showing off his creation to the soldiers. "The battery can last for up to five hours. It's very easy to control it, you can just use the handler here. Not only can my drone be used for investigation, it can also send messages! Here, look at this, I still have the footage from yesterday when the zombies showed strange behavior. Look at how clear the image is, it's full HD, I tell you!'
Indeed, the footage the drone had recorded did not lose out to high quality CCTVs out there. Not to mention it was airborne! Student Huang's talent was quite remarkable. All of the soldiers were awed. However, Commander Yang, whose eyes were as sharp as a dagger, immediately noticed something strange. "Wait a second! Go back to minute nine and replay it. This time slower."
Realizing the commander's grave look, the soldiers did not dare to play around, even Student Huang subconsciously held his breath and tried to minimize his presence. Commander Yang's eyes were trained on the screen, then after a few moments, he ordered, "Pause!"
The soldier operating the footage quickly hit the pause button and the screen was frozen when the drone had just re-entered F University. It showed a bird view of the buildings from high above.
However, Commander Yang was not interested in the architecture. He magnified the image again and again, until it was focused on the fifth floor of a certain building. They could see the crowd of zombies inside and some of them were still feasting on humans. Crimson liquid splattered on the otherwise clear window. The sight was plainly horrifying.
"Which building is this?" Commander Yang asked.
"Answering Commander's question, it's the Literature Department Building!"
"Literature…" Yang Tengfei sank into thoughts.
The soldiers glanced at each other in confusion, not understanding what could have attracted the commander's attention.
Yang Tengfei himself did not know whether he was just thinking too much about it. After being magnified, the image turned blurred and not even a single person's features could be discerned. Yet at that split second, he actually saw a very familiar silhouette.
Familiar — meaning that it should be a person whom he had seen recently but unfortunately, Commander Yang had met a lot of people these past few days due to the rescue mission. He could not recall it right at the moment. The strange thing was… how could he find someone familiar in this footage when he had never stepped foot in the Literature Building before? Frustration welled in his heart. He could feel that the answer was right in front of him yet there was still a layer of fog covering his eyes, preventing him from seeing the truth clearly.
He told the soldiers, "Send me this footage."
He was going to examine them frame by frame. Yang Tengfei did not know either why he was suddenly so obsessed. It's just that… he had a hunch if he were to dismiss this little strangeness right now, it would be detrimental for him in the future.
Speaking of literature, if he did not remember wrong, Zhao Bolin's little assistant hailed from literature major, didn't he? By any chance, could it be him…?
In the next second, Yang Tengfei immediately denied that possibility. No, how could he be in the Literature Building at that time then appeared here? It was not like he had braved through hundreds of zombies alone, right? Even though Yang Tengfei was a soldier, he did not dare to claim that he could go between buildings unharmed. Not to mention that Lu Yizhou was only an ordinary student…
