9.51 Why Not Me?

All over the country, the zombies responded with a loud growl, creating a terrifying cacophony that seemed to emerge from the belly of Hell. It was as if they were injected by a powerful stimulant; their originally jerky and stiff movements became swift and agile. The turbid white eyes gleamed with a faint crimson color, emitting thick bloodlust and thirst for blood.  0

They broke into houses, scaled the high buildings, overturned the cars strewn haphazardly on the road. The citizens hiding in the safety of their own houses, camping in the wilderness as well as those taking shelter in high places where zombies could not reach… all of them were unable to escape the bloody siege. Screams of fear and despair reverberated through the air. Fire exploded from numerous buildings. 

In a blink of an eye, the barely surviving country turned into a bloody purgatory and the clear blue sky was covered in a thick layer of gloom.

Inside the military basecamp.

The technician, who was responsible for monitoring the situation, cried out in shock when he looked at the screen in front of him. "Fuck! What's happening?!" 

Those who heard him followed his line of sight and were stunned as well. They could not believe their eyes. Three months following the virus outbreak, the army had almost stabilized the condition. They sent out rescue parties as often as they could manage, rescuing the trapped and helpless citizens and bringing them to the military basecamp. All that remained were those who chose not to move from their houses and those who stayed in the wilderness, preventing the soldiers from finding them due to the lack of time and manpower. Nonetheless, the number of survivors had stabilized in the range of 400-500. 

However, now… they saw the blue dots which represented the 'normal citizens' turned glaring red with a speed visible to naked eyes! Meanwhile, the red dots — zombies — were constantly moving like a wild tumor, devouring the healthy red with a might of unsurpassable tsunami. The soldiers and technicians in the control room could only witness the massacre with blank eyes and pale faces.

What was happening…? Why did something like this happen out of nowhere?!

One of the soldiers snapped out of his trance and tremblingly reached for his walkie-talkie. "C–Commander Yang, we have to inform Commander Yang as soon as possible!" His urgent tone brought everyone back to their senses and in an instant, the basecamp was thrown into chaos. 

"This is Team C. Code black warning. I repeat, code black warning!" The soldier tried to reach the Commander with the signal they had discussed previously. Under normal circumstances, as soon as Yang Tengfei received the signal, he must drop everything he was doing at the moment and lead the troops to solve the emergency. 

However, the soldier kept calling and calling… and his voice was akin to a small stone falling into the deep sea. Chills permeated his bones and despair twisted into his heart like a poisonous vine. He lifted his head, the rims of his eyes reddened as he met the desperate gazes of his comrades. "I can't reach the Commander!!" He cried out in dismay. 

On the other hand…

Commander Yang Tengfei, whom everyone was trying to reach, was currently fighting his own battle on the rooftop of the Biology Building in F University. The helicopter had exploded and they were besieged by hundreds of berserk zombies. The ammunition had almost run out but the number of zombies in front of them was not decreasing at all!

"Kill the King!" He roared furiously. "Kill the King and they will all perish!" For some reason, the crowd of zombies got more aggressive in front of him. If he let his attention swayed even for a moment, he would find a few zombies trying to sneak an attack and bite him! Plus, he had to protect the helpless and frightened Li Zhu in his arms and hence, his hands were too full to deal with Lu Yizhou!

Alas, was it that easy to deal with the Zombie King?

Every bullet which strayed to him was easily dodged. Not to mention that the zombies were a bunch of martyrs who would pounce on the soldiers as soon as they aimed at their King, preventing them from launching an attack!

It was not that the soldiers did not want to kill Lu Yizhou, but they were really helpless to! It was already so difficult to keep their own lives under the zombies' siege, and they had little time to spare for the Zombie King. In fifteen minutes' time, two soldiers were caught by the zombies and thrown from the fifth floor building. Their screams echoed terrifyingly as they plunged into the sea of zombies awaiting for them below. On the other hand, the others' stamina was soon depleting. They could feel that their momentum was getting weaker, whereas the zombies became increasingly aggressive. This was simply a suicide mission!

"It's impossible!" The soldiers cried out. One after another, their gun ran out of bullets and they could only confront the zombies face to face. "Commander, it's impossible to kill him!"

"Damn it!" Yang Tengfei cursed out loud. His sharp features were drenched in sweat and splashes of blood, and his eyes glimmered in rage. He caught Li Zhu's trembling figure from the corner of his eyes. Gritting his teeth, he shoved one of the guns in his hand to the youth. "Take it and shoot!" When Li Zhu merely stood there with a dumbfounded look as he cradled the burning gun, Yang Tengfei ground his molars in frustration, hating that iron could not become steel. He bellowed amidst the rain of gunshots and growls of zombies. "Snap out of it! You have to fight for your own life! Now take the gun and shoot!"

Li Zhu's tears had long since dried up. His whole person was already frightened silly and under Yang Tengfei's pressuring command, he could only fumble with the gun. However, his arms were too weak and his fingers were shaking so badly that he could not muster the strength to press the trigger…

In that moment, a clear and pleasant laugh echoed behind him, the satisfaction and ease from that voice was utterly contrasting with the hellish scene around. Hearing that voice, Li Zhu shuddered as though he was struck by lightning. Before he could even think, he cried out desperately, "Please… Please stop this, I beg you, Teacher! Please let us go…!" 

Yang Tengfei let out a foul curse, it was unknown who it was directed to.

"Let you go?" Zhao Bolin emphasized each word firmly. His voice was gentle and pleasant to the ears, yet at the moment, it only sent chills down everyone's spine. "Then, earlier… did you have any plans to let me go?" He harrumphed coldly. 

Zhao Bolin was very clear on this matter in his heart. If not for Lu Yizhou, then the one whose corpse was buried on the ground right now would be him. He had never expected that Li Zhu would be so vain but… who could blame him? It was human's nature, after all. In desperate moments, they could even throw their pride and dignity away. On the contrary, he admired someone like Yang Tengfei more. At least, he still had the backbone not to beg for mercy.

Admiring everyone's twisted expression due to his words, Zhao Bolin was finally satisfied and shifted his gaze to Lu Yizhou who had been standing still beside him. Ever since Lu Yizhou let out that loud roar, he had not reacted whatsoever to the proceedings in front of him as if that one command had drained all of his energy. Zhao Bolin was slightly worried. However, knowing that this was the revenge opportunity Lu Yizhou had painstakingly prepared for him, he did not want to let the effort go to waste. And thus, Professor Zhao chose to take his fill on the suffering around him first. 

"Lu Yizhou?" He reached out to cup Lu Yizhou's cheek and wiped the blood on the zombie's mouth with his sleeve. "Are you okay?" He asked in concern. 

Lu Yizhou barely gave a reaction. He merely lowered his eyelids to gaze at Zhao Bolin with that pitch black eyes of his. 

The zombie in front of him was clearly the most dangerous of all, yet somehow Zhao Bolin could not bring himself to be afraid. The corner of his lips tilted into a smile. "Have you been shocked silly after biting someone for the first time? Who told you to be so greedy?" Zhao Bolin tried to crack a joke to dispel the tense atmosphere. However, he did not expect Lu Yizhou's brows to furrow tightly as if he was enduring some kind of pain!

Frowning, he checked Lu Yizhou over with his eyes and found that the zombie was clenching his fists tightly, his arms trembling so hard that blue veins flared along the skin.

Ah. Realization suddenly dawned on Zhao Bolin. Lu Yizhou was desperately trying to keep his instinct in check. He was trying not to let his zombie side rule his logic.

Zhao Bolin could confidently say that he was the one who knew Lu Yizhou the best, both physically and mentally, especially after he transformed into a zombie. And through their close and intimate interaction in these past three months, he had learned Lu Yizhou as a person too. He had accompanied the zombie through his first feeding and hence, he knew how difficult it was for Lu Yizhou to cross that mental barrier.

His golden eyes softened as a sour feeling spread over his chest. Lu Yizhou dealt with the pilot to destroy the helicopter… all for Zhao Bolin. However, aside from heartache at seeing how dejected Lu Yizhou was, there was also a tinge of regret and jealousy wriggling on the corner of his heart. 

Why should Lu Yizhou bite the pilot? Why should that person become his first? A voice inside him demanded unreasonably. Why not me? 

Zhao Bolin was startled by his own thoughts and hastily shook his head. No! What kind of idea was it? Lu Yizhou biting him was out of the question! Not to mention that Zhao Bolin was unwilling to become a zombie, he was also afraid of pain! He opened his mouth, intending to comfort the zombie with a few soothing words. Alas, before he could even say one word, Lu Yizhou's eyes suddenly widened as his gaze went through him. 

He reached out toward Zhao Bolin almost in desperation. Zhao Bolin only felt a strong force pulling him forward, cushioning his fall as he rolled on the ground. There was a bang and the ground beside them cracked. Dust flew up as a result, and oh Lord… Zhao Bolin only felt that his ears were ringing and he could not hear anything for a moment. He lifted his head with a gasp and discovered that it was Yang Tengfei who aimed at him! 

Zhao Bolin glared at him resentfully, wishing that he could turn the other into minced meat with the force of his resentment. This person really wanted to kill him!

At some point, Yang Tengfei had let Li Zhu take the rear, trusting him to shoot the zombies while he aimed at Zhao Bolin and fired again and again. He was aware the chance of hitting Lu Yizhou was almost nil and hence — he shot Zhao Bolin because he was Lu Yizhou's Achilles Heel! 

Commander Yang's eyes were bloodshot. "Die!!" 

Zhao Bolin's pupils dilated sharply. Under the oppression of black muzzle, his body tensed as he prepared to dodge. However, Lu Yizhou pressed him back into his embrace, firmly protecting Zhao Bolin's body with his own. He only felt the vibrations of Lu Yizhou's chest under his palm and the next thing he knew, his vision blurred and a sense of weightlessness overcame him. 

A choked cry escaped from Zhao Bolin's throat.

They were falling! Holy shit, they were falling from the fifth floor—!
