9.52 Turn Around
"Ah—!" 1
Zhao Bolin squeezed his eyes shut as the ground inched closer and closer. Sharp wind whistled past his ear, mixed with the scorching smell of burnt metal and blood. He buried his face into Lu Yizhou's chest, fingers digging into Lu Yizhou's back as he prepared himself for the fall.
However, he only felt a sudden jolt before they soared through the sky again.
Huh…? It seemed like… the timing was not quite right…?
Carefully, he peeled open his eyes and was shocked to find that they were already a few hundred meters away from the Biology Building. Zhao Bolin stared wide-eyed at the tiny silhouettes on top of the rooftop and could not come to his senses for a while. How fast! He had known that Lu Yizhou had a superb physique, but he never expected that he would be able to do something like this!
This time, Zhao Bolin clenched his teeth and forced his eyes to open even as they neared the ground. However, the scenario he dreaded never happened. He saw Lu Yizhou propelled his legs on the nearest surface; the wall, the thick branch of trees, never landing on the ground. Then he pushed himself forward and brought Zhao Bolin to run across the flat rooftop. After a few seconds, they flew past the sky again.
Lu Yizhou was so swift and the way he carried Zhao Bolin as though he weighed nothing, it gave off the impression that he could really fly.
Zhao Bolin's expression became dazed. Leaning into Lu Yizhou's warm — because he had just fed on flesh — embrace, listening to his powerful rhythmic heartbeat and feeling the wind fluttering his hair… Everything gave off a very strong déjà vu. It was as if in some distant past, in a place he did not recognize, he had experienced something like this before. He could even see a pair of huge wings behind Lu Yizhou's back. Shocked, Zhao Bolin rubbed his eyes and found that it was only the hem of Lu Yizhou's coat which was fluttering due to his rapid movement.
What was that…? Hallucinations?
It was not until Lu Yizhou landed on a desolate street did Zhao Bolin snap out of his trance. He looked around to see that they were entering an empty house a few distance away from the university. It was a small, minimalist two-story house with a small yard in front. Through the window, Zhao Bolin could see a few zombies running around as well as the black smoke billowing from afar.
Lu Yizhou carefully placed him on the dusty sofa while he himself crouched down. Thick concern could be seen on his pitch black eyes. Even without saying anything, Zhao Bolin could already guess what he was trying to ask. He chuckled briefly and patted the zombie's cheek in a playful gesture. "I'm okay. A bit nauseous, but overall fine. Go and wash your face first. You reek of blood."
Lu Yizhou's lashes trembled imperceptibly. Nodding, he got up and made his way to the bathroom with ease. A few seconds later, the sound of water running could be heard from the closed door.
Zhao Bolin was stunned as a question popped up in his mind. Now that he thought about it, why did Lu Yizhou bring him here of all places? Why did he seem so familiar with this place?
When the zombie came out ten minutes later with no hint of blood on his body, Zhao Bolin blurted out the question he had been holding back, his eyes shining in excitement. "Is this your house?"
Lu Yizhou nodded. He was not surprised that Zhao Bolin could guess it. To be exact, this was 'Ru Jinke's house', the owner of the body Lu Yizhou was occupying. Fortunately, 666 had already dug up all information about his current identity. When Lu Yizhou was fleeing from the protagonist's attack, Ru Jinke's house was the first place which came to mind. Of course, this would only be a temporary place.
He just did not want Zhao Bolin to be hurt in the crossfire. The most important thing for Lu Yizhou was his lover's safety and thus, as soon as Yang Tengfei started to shoot them like a madman, he decisively left the arena for his minions. It was unknown how long the zombies could hold the protagonists back because truth to be told, Lu Yizhou was certain that they could not die so easily. Nonetheless, even if they survived, Lu Yizhou wanted them to lose at least a layer of skin.
But now, it seemed like coming to this place was the right choice.
"Wow…" Zhao Bolin stood up and looked around like a curious cat. Then ignoring Lu Yizhou, he started to explore the place excitedly, only short of flipping the floorboard to see if he had a secret passage below.
Lu Yizhou could only shake his head helplessly and let his lover do what he wanted. In the meantime, he went to the kitchen and cooked two packages of noodles. As a university student, Ru Jinke's junk food stock did not disappoint. Fortunately, Ru Jinke lived in a medium to high-class area so the electricity and water had not been cut off yet.
He threw the long expired eggs and soggy vegetables into the trash bin and opted to choose frozen ham and sausages instead.
As the noodles boiled in the pot, Lu Yizhou's mind began to work.
At most, they could stay in this house for three days and after that, Lu Yizhou had to think of a safe place to hide Zhao Bolin in. It was not certain until when this stalemate would drag on. After all, Lu Yizhou had sped up the rate of the virus' mutation inside his zombie minions' body. In other words, from now on they would only be stronger and more resilient. But at the same time, the final fight against the protagonists would also be imminent. Lu Yizhou was certain that Yang Tengfei would spare nothing to hunt him down.
But for now…
He carried the burning pot out of the kitchen with his bare hands and scooped a large bowl for Zhao Bolin. The curious cat was lured out by the alluring aroma and drifted to the dining table, almost drooling when he saw the juicy ham and sausage inside the boiling soup.
"Oh, I'm starving," he rubbed his stomach with a groan. "You have no idea how tiring it is to deal with them…"
[Did they bully you?]
"No." Zhao Bolin laughed as if Lu Yizhou had just told a funny joke. "How can I allow them to bully me?"
Lu Yizhou handed him the chopsticks and spoon. All the while, Zhao Bolin's golden eyes were peering at him as if he wanted to slice his head apart to see what was in his mind. Lu Yizhou lowered his eyelids and pretended he noticed nothing. Just as he turned around and wanted to search for something to do, Zhao Bolin's voice drifted softly,
"Lu Yizhou."
He halted in his tracks but did not turn around.
"Lu Yizhou, look at me." There was a harsh sound of a chair being dragged back followed by a tug on the hem of his sleeves. Zhao Bolin's voice was grave as he demanded, "Turn around. Why do I sense that something is off with you?"
