9.53 Lost Control
At first, everything was only Zhao Bolin's speculation. After all, they had been busy running away and escaping from Commander Yang's troops. It was not until they arrived here that a sense of incongruity seeped into his heart.1
—Something was off with Lu Yizhou, he could tell.
Zhao Bolin was someone who found it difficult to believe in unscientific matters like instinct or déjà vu. However this time, the feeling was so strong that he could not bring himself to ignore it. He had a hunch that… if he were to let Lu Yizhou walk away now, he would definitely regret it in the future.
Seeing that Lu Yizhou did not give any response whatsoever, the worry in Zhao Bolin's heart intensified, even the fragrant aroma of instant noodles were unable to lure him anymore. He circled around to stand in front of Lu Yizhou and peered up at him. Upon closer scrutiny, Lu Yizhou did not look different from the outside but… he was not looking into Zhao Bolin's eyes. The Lu Yizhou he knew would never avert his gaze away. He was steadfast, domineering and dauntless. But this Lu Yizhou… it seemed like he was afraid of something?
Zhao Bolin pondered on it and could easily guess, "Is it because of you biting the pilot?" Then he observed Lu Yizhou's reaction closely and — bingo. It was apparent that Zhao Bolin had touched the crux of the matter.
His heart which had been hanging on a single thread could finally be put down and he subconsciously let out a sigh of relief. Goodness… his mind had gone ahead of him, conjuring up countless other possibilities as to why Lu Yizhou suddenly acted so distant like this. But as it turned out, this was just because of the earlier feeding?
He could not help but joke, "I don't even blame you for sneaking behind my back, so what are you acting so dejected for?"
Lu Yizhou pursed his lips, the arms hanging loosely by his side were trembling ever so slightly.
Zhao Bolin might not have any problems with it. He might have already accepted Lu Yizhou's nature as a zombie, thinking that it was natural for him to bite people but… it was not the same for Lu Yizhou.
For three months, he had kept an iron control on himself. No matter how hungry he was, how tempting the humans in front of him were, he could always shove his zombie instinct to the back of his mind. However, he had no idea what had possessed back in the helicopter — he actually bit people for the first time! Exactly how could this happen? He had clearly been biding his time, waiting until the perfect moment to catch everyone off guard so he could whisk Zhao Bolin away. Due to Yang Tengfei's accusation, the soldiers' attention was focused on Zhao Bolin, enabling Lu Yizhou to sneak into the helicopter in order to cut off the protagonists' means to escape.
…And that was where the problem came in.
He jumped into the cockpit and saw the pilot's widened eyes. The poor soldier was so shocked that he could not even make a sound. Through those eyes, Lu Yizhou saw the reflection of himself. Pitch-black eyes, extremely pale skin, crawling pale blue veins and after that… his memory went blank. Lu Yizhou truly had no idea what happened and the next thing he knew… the soldier had screamed like a pig being slaughtered. That desperate scream was akin to a harsh slap for Lu Yizhou. He snapped to his senses only to find that his teeth were deeply embedded into the soldier's neck. Even now when he had washed his mouth countless times, he could still taste the intoxicating flavor of raw flesh, blood, as well as the fear and despair emanating from the dying man.
—He had lost control.
For the first time ever, his zombie instinct had taken over his consciousness and made him do something he was not supposed to do.
It was okay this time because the victim was nobody but… what if it became Zhao Bolin in the future? What if one day, he woke up to find his lover as a… cold corpse due to the blood loss or… walking around mindlessly like any other zombie outside?
Lu Yizhou was afraid. He was truly, horribly afraid. After he had bitten the pilot, he was not given much time to dwell on it because he had to keep his guard up against the protagonists. It was not until now, when they had arrived in a temporary safe place, where there were only two of them in this enclosed space, did Lu Yizhou's mind keep drifting back to the past. Whenever he recalled the pilot's horrified look and imagined that it could very well be Zhao Bolin one day, he felt so terrible that he wanted to puke out the flesh he had just eaten.
He could feel it. Something had changed within his body after he tasted human meat for the first time. He had become much stronger, more agile and invulnerable, but at the same time, his zombie instinct was also getting more and more stable. If this went on, then… Lu Yizhou feared that he would succumb to his instinct sooner or later.
He feared that he would look at Zhao Bolin one day and think that he was a 'prey' rather than 'partner'...
Goddamnit it…! The situation was so ironic that Lu Yizhou could not help but smile bitterly. The most dangerous problem Lu Yizhou had to solve was actually not Commander Yang Tengfei — but himself. He was akin to a ticking time bomb by Zhao Bolin's side, one whose danger could not be predicted, one whose might could not be defeated.
Lu Yizhou lifted his eyelids and gazed at his lover in forlorn. Look at him… he was so slender and thin. If Lu Yizhou were to lose his mind, how could Zhao Bolin fight back?
Even now, he could not deny the fact that he desired Zhao Bolin's flesh. A part of his mind still clamored for him to bite the person in front of him, to devour him whole until—
Fuck! Lu Yizhou shut his eyes and gripped onto the wooden table beside him for support. As a result, the fragile table almost crumbled into dust under his grip. Lu Yizhou gasped softly when a splinter of wood stabbed into his palm, drawing blood. It did not hurt and the wound immediately closed even before blood could seep out, but this was just the ultimate proof that his ability had evolved even more. If only Lu Yizhou's sweat glands had still worked, he would have broken into cold sweat by now.
"Lu Yizhou…?" Zhao Bolin was taken aback when the edge of the solid wooden table suddenly crumbled into dust. The person in front of him looked like he was experiencing a great deal of pain and Zhao Bolin could not help but rush ahead to support him. "Are you okay?!"
However, he did not expect that even before he could touch Lu Yizhou, he would be brushed away by a sweep of his arm. Lu Yizhou might not exert even one tenth of his strength but for Zhao Bolin, it felt like he had just been slammed by a truck!
The impact sent his body flying and he slammed into the wall with a force strong enough to break his ribs!
