10.7 Curiosity Kills The Cat

His sentence was cut off short by loud incessant beeps. An emotionless voice drifted out from the speaker in the hallway. "First warning for S-27. Don't spread baseless rumors inside the prison." The sentence was repeated twice more before it became silent. S-27 was exactly Christian's inmate's series numbers. 

To think that a warning would cut in at such an appropriate time… it seemed like someone had always been monitoring them! Lu Yizhou narrowed his eyes thoughtfully. So Pandora was considered as a baseless rumor for them? No, this demeanor was just like trying to bury some secret matter under the ground!

Christian immediately clicked his jaws shut and his face became ugly. The prisoners who saw this offered one excuse after another before they scrambled back to their cells, leaving Lu Yizhou and Christian alone. 

"Satisfied?" The man slammed the door close with his backhand and shot him an icy glare. 

Lu Yizhou let out a quiet snort. Satisfied? On the contrary, the doubt and questions he had toward this prison was increasing rapidly. The mystery of Pandora, the strange happenings that the warden said would take place at night and also the song he heard earlier… Alas, in this place, nobody could offer him an answer except Christian, but the man did not look like someone who was willing to cooperate. Not to mention the tight surveillance…

It was surely not impossible to ask 666 to tamper with it for a while. However, it would only generate unnecessary suspicion and bring trouble to himself. Lu Yizhou still had not found a way to deal with the chip on the back of his neck. Judging from the earlier victim, the electricity voltage must be quite high. If he was not careful, he might perish in the warden's hands before he could get to his lover.

Lu Yizhou shrugged like a naïve newcomer he was. "I was just curious."

"In this place, curiosity kills the cat, newbie…" the corner of Christian's lips tilted into a dangerous sneer. "...so you'd better live quietly and obediently if you don't want to be killed." After saying that, Christian brushed past him, bumping into his shoulder along the way, and lay down on the bottom bunk of the bed. "If you grind your teeth, snore, or kick your blanket at night, I will kill you," he added in a threatening tone.

A cold glint flashed through Lu Yizhou's eyes. He did not take Christian's threat to heart, of course, but he was afraid that… whatever he might do in the future might implicate this person too. He did not fear godly enemies, only pig teammates. And it was worse because this pig teammate was someone he could not afford to kill. If Christian were to get in his way… perhaps Lu Yizhou should borrow someone's knife to kill, just like he did in the previous world.

[Can you do something about the power electric in the chip?]

[666: Hic, 666 is not sure, but… don't put your hopes too high, Host. It looks like this chip's GPS function and electric current come from one power source. It's difficult to turn one off while maintaining the other…]

"You haven't told me your name," Christian suddenly piped in. 

Lu Yizhou was not in a good mood because nothing ever worked in this place and hence, his reply was curt. "Leonard."

"Leonard…?" Christian's eyes abruptly snapped open and he sat up with an incredulous look. "Leonard, the mad cannibal?" 

The prison had allocated schedules for them to watch television together twice a week in the name of education, and it would be boring news channels every goddamn time. Of course, a smart person like Christian would instantly connect Leonard's name to the case that had been booming in the country. He just did not expect that this madman would be his cellmate in the end!

"It seems like the warden doesn't inform you about this." The sarcasm in Lu Yizhou's tone was apparent as he saw the other's shocked appearance. 

Christian's face darkened. When Lu Yizhou put it like this, how could he not realize what was going on?! The warden wanted to dig a pit for him and he had foolishly jumped into it himself! He gritted his teeth with a resentful look. However, in the face of Lu Yizhou this newbie, he still wanted to save some face. So, he put on an indifferent front and declared, "So what if you're Leonard? It's still not certain who will win if we fight right now."

"Indeed," Lu Yizhou nodded sagely.

Christian: "..." Forget it, he could not communicate with this madman!

In the end, the two people tolerated each other with much difficulty and a temporary truce was formed. They made an agreement that no one was allowed to peek when someone was in the toilet. 

That's just what Lu Yizhou wanted. Moreover, he had 666 to keep guard for him. Once he discovered that Christian had violated the agreement, then he would not hesitate to gouge the man's eyes out to teach him a lesson. 

So far, the atmosphere in their cell could be considered peaceful and civil.

Nighttime arrived and the warden returned with a few staff to distribute food — a few packages of ham and sausage. Lu Yizhou could not help but sigh morosely when he saw this. They were really treated as livestock here. Moreover, they could only drink water from the tap and it smelled faintly of dirt and rust. Who knew how much bacteria was contained there? Were criminals no longer human beings in the end??

After this unpleasant experience, Lu Yizhou was determined to finish his mission in this world as soon as possible. He could not help but think of Pandora. He had lived in this prison for almost a decade, in the bottommost level where the living environment was definitely worse than the level Lu Yizhou was in now. Even Lu Yizhou had felt that this was unbearable. How could Pandora continue to live here? Lu Yizhou felt distressed thinking about the hardship he had gone through.

After dinner, he was laying on the upper bunk when a voice came from the speaker in the hallway again. It was different from the voice who issued the warning to Christian earlier. "Current time 8.52 PM. Lights out in eight minutes. Be careful not to wander in the hallway. The consequences will be yours to handle."

[666: Uwaaa, w–why does this sound so ominous?! QAQ what consequences are they talking about?!]

[I don't know either.] Lu Yizhou furrowed his brow. [We can only wait.]

Right as the hour hand of the clock moved to nine, all the lights went out at the same time and submerged the whole prison in pitch-black darkness. It was so dark that one would feel momentary blindness. Lu Yizhou reached out his hand and waved it in front of his face, but he could not even see it.

There were surprised cries nearby from the newcomers who had entered together with Lu Yizhou. 

"What the fuck is going on?!"

"How can you turn off all the lights? Damn it, how can we go to the toilet later?!" They yelled out accusingly.

"Your courage is quite big, newbie," Christian's low voice came from the bottom bunk. 

Lu Yizhou did not deign to answer that. He was focused on observing his surroundings and he also had 666 on standby in case something untoward would pop up — even though he would not rely too much on the system. It was a scaredy cat, after all.

In the next second, his eyes quietly widened.

He heard it again… 

It was the same voice who had sung when he entered the prison earlier!
