10.34 Experimental Subject

Lu Yizhou's brain turned sluggish for a moment.  1

The logical part of his mind subconsciously rejected this ridiculous notion because, how was it possible for someone to cross through the boundary of time and return to a century ago within a blink of an eye? However, he recalled once again that this was a simulator. Anything was possible in this place and he should not think too much about it.

Yes, that's right… he only needed to ponder about why he ended up in this place. What was up with the floor of the cage? Had he triggered some kind of mechanism or… had it always been there, waiting for someone to jump into it? No. Lu Yizhou instantly rejected that possibility. In the original plot, the two protagonists had also broken the padlock and barged into the cage in search of Pandora. Not only that, Percy had even destroyed the bone skeletons until it scattered to dust. However, he did not trigger this kind of event.

Or in other words, Lu Yizhou must have done something for him to be stranded in this place. As for what it was, he could only slowly explore it by himself. Fortunately, his connection with 666 remained stable in this bizzare environment.

Come to think of it, if he was currently a hundred years in the past, did it mean he could meet his lover before… he was reduced into bone skeletons?! Lu Yizhou's eyes lit up. As a veteran transmigrator who had gone through nine worlds before, his instinct told him that this was his chance to find out the truth about the curse in Nightingale Prison and how to free his lover from it!

He was very eager to get out of this place and found Pandora. However, when he tried to move down from the bed… he belatedly realized that black metal bracelets were wrapped around his wrists, ankles and neck, and they were held by long steel chains which were affixed to the wall. The length of the chains were only enough for him to circle around the cage. As for breaking out, don't even think about it. He could not even touch the gate.

Lu Yizhou was rendered speechless. He recalled that the bone skeleton he had seen yesterday was also chained in a similar fashion. Even after he breathed his last, his flesh rotted and was eaten by insects, the chains still lasted as a restraint to keep him inside the cage until the end of the time.

Lu Yizhou's brows furrowed and an absurd conjecture formed in his mind. It couldn't be…

[666: Hehe, you're right, Host! Congratulations, you have become a human experimental subject! Fortunately, the technology a hundred years ago is quite outdated. 666 has managed to extract some information from the computers there. Simply put, you're still a human, but you can't be considered one either.]

Thanks to 666, Lu Yizhou finally glimpsed upon the hideous and bloody truth of this place.

Before it was transformed into Nightingale Prison, this place was actually an elusive research institute that was funded by the government. The existence of this institute as well as the content of its research should never be disclosed to the public and hence, it was built deep underground like some kind of terrifying beast who would never see the light of the day.

The name of the project was 'Divine Origin' — or in layman terms, the researchers were trying to create a God.

No matter which era it was, as long as desire was still a part of human nature, longevity would always be sought after. The emergence of various deadly plagues and viruses had struck fear in people's hearts. Each time, they were able to evade death simply because of the sacrifice of countless others. But who could have foreseen that it would not be their turn next time?

Money, status and power were profane things which could be earned, but the same could not be said with health.

You might be a very influential person who stood above all, but once you crossed a certain age, you still had no choice but to obediently wait for death. You might have amassed wealth which was enough to sustain half of the population on Earth, but sadly you could not even protect yourself from a cancerous disease.

In the face of God, human beings were absolutely weak, pathetic and helpless.

So why not create a God whom they could control at will?

The researchers were certain that the key lay in their brains. A genius physicist once published a controversial theory that humans were only able to utilize five to ten percent of their brain power throughout their lives. A maximum of fifteen percent was already enough to make someone a once-in-a-century prodigy.

It was speculated that if humans could break through this mental constraint, then they would achieve a breakthrough and ascend as a superior species. Psychic powers that only existed in science fiction, such as clairvoyance, telekinesis, psychometry, levitation, prophecy and others, would not simply exist in imagination!

Once humans managed to activate the better part of their brain, they would no longer be considered as a human, but a demigod!

That was the ultimate purpose of 'Divine Origin'; to cultivate a fetus' brain in a nutrient solution, giving it regular stimuli and providing it with the best nutrients. They monitored the brain's activity and it was not until the level of activity exceeded 50% did the brain be sent into an artificial body.

This was the origin of divinity that they had been yearning for!

Lu Yizhou: "..."

His expression was weird as he examined his own body. This was an… artificial body? Of course, Lu Yizhou did not feel that there were any changes with his 'brain', but that could be attributed to the fact that he did not actually belong to this era.

He touched his arm and the sensation that was transmitted to his brain was very silky and velvety, just like real human skin. He tried to pinch it and felt the usual sharp pain stinging down his nerves. He brought his thumb to his mouth and tried to bite it and see if he would bleed—

[666: W–Wait, Host! 666 doesn't recommend you to do that!!]

The alarm and horror in 666's tone made Lu Yizhou pause with his teeth only millimeters away from tearing into the skin. [Why?]
