Isn't That The Case?
Dr. Feng was dazed when this voice suddenly echoed beside his ear, and the first thing that popped up in his mind was, 'Indeed, this kind of voice is the best…'2
Then, he abruptly jolted back to his senses once he realized who had shielded his fall. He was so shocked that the alcohol in his system instantly evaporated by half. Squeezing his eyes shut, he gripped onto the mahogany desk to prop himself up and Luan let him go just like that, much to his relief.
"Luan, you…" He turned to face the man behind him only to be stunned by their close proximity.
Their heights only differed by half a head and thus in such a distance, Dr. Feng's lips almost brushed against the taller man's chin. Their breaths intermingled as they found themselves staring into each other's eyes.
Somehow, Dr. Feng found his head became dizzier when he met such an intense and heated stare. Yet he still could not bring himself to look away. In his honest opinion, Luan's eyes were still the most beautiful he had ever seen. Especially… the tenderness that radiated from within…
Realizing what kind of inappropriate thought had crossed his mind, Dr. Feng abruptly jerked backward as if he had been scalded and his spine slammed against the sharp edge of the desk. In an instant, burning pain seared through his back and he doubled over with a gasp. It hurt so much that tears were squeezed out of his eyes. Unfortunately, the sudden movement caused his vision to spin and he almost fell again if not for Luan holding his arm in the nick of time.
He cursed under his breath. For God's sake Feng… just what are you doing?!
Luan's voice came again above him, still as deep and pleasant as ever. "I know you don't want to see me, but… let me help you on this one, okay?"
Wait, what…? Who did not want to see whom? Still disoriented, Dr. Feng could not help but feel like something was wrong with his memory. Had he drunk so much that he somehow stepped into a parallel world? It was Luan who avoided him first, right…?
It was in this dazed manner that he let himself be supported to the couch that was only used to welcome the inspectors during regular inspection sessions.
The distant part of his mind – the one that was not working properly right now – sensed that something was wrong with their current situation. But in his inebriated state, asking him to think was no different than asking a toddler to solve an algebra equation. He could only stare at Luan blankly, his gaze following the man as Luan went to fetch him a glass of water.
"Drink this." Dr. Feng flinched in surprise when the cup half-filled with water suddenly appeared in front of him, held by slender and graceful fingers with well-defined knuckles.
Even his fingers were very beautiful— wait… that's not right. When did Luan get here so fast? Had he teleported?
Still a tad confused, Dr. Feng sluggishly reached out his hands and it was not until his palms closed around the cup did he finally realize what had been nagging on the back of his mind for a while. He snapped his gaze up in shock. Luan, he… how did he catch him and hold this cup? Didn't he only have a virtual body?!
Perhaps the bewilderment in his expression was too obvious, Luan showed a faintly helpless look and helped him bring the cup to his mouth. "You can talk after you finish this, okay?"
Dr. Feng gave a slow dazed blink and responded with an 'en', then he obediently tipped his head back and let the water slide down his throat. The icy liquid was akin to a soothing balm to his parched throat, filling him with immense relief and satisfaction. It felt so comfortable that he could not resist drinking a little faster. Oh God, why hadn't he realized how delicious water was? It was sweet, pure and heavenly!
Too focused on quenching his thirst, Dr. Feng failed to notice that Luan's gaze was fixed on the fair column of his neck and his little Adam's apple that bobbed up and down. His eyes were searing as if a wild flame had ignited from within.
Seeing that the drunk Head Administrator almost choked on his water, he reached out to hold the cup and whispered in a soft yet raspy voice, "Slower."
Dr. Feng's lashes quivered and he almost let go of the cup.
In the middle of the night, under the luminous glow of countless codes swimming in the air, the voice seemed to have gained a hint of ambiguity. It sounded deeper and lower than usual, making his ears tickle as if the tip of the feather was softly grazing against them.
This was clearly not the first time he was alone with Luan after everyone was gone. But that was before… before Luan confessed his feelings for him! Thus, even though they were all alone in the empty building, he had never felt anything except for gratitude that he finally had someone to talk to in the middle of his short break.
Alas, now that he knew Luan's hidden feelings for him, how could he still treat him like usual?
The more he thought about it, the more depressed he was. Clearly, the one who confessed was Luan and the one who decided to disappear on a whim was also Luan. So why was he feeling so self-conscious now? Damn it… it must be Xiao and Lu Yizhou's nonsense that had brainwashed him. Now he could not even recall how he used to treat Luan!
Luan had no idea what was in Dr. Feng's mind, but when he saw that the man was in obvious bad mood, he lowered his lashes to hide the self-deprecating smile in his eyes.
Exactly what are you expecting to happen, Luan?
At first, he really did not have any intention to appear. Looking at this man from afar, as he had always done for years, was already enough for him. But when he saw how Dr. Feng walked falteringly, how he kept knocking against one thing after another, Luan could not help but want to help him out.
He had lost count of how many times he restrained the urge to just rush forward and hold the man in his arms. Even now, the indent on his palms from where the nails had embedded into it, had not disappeared yet.
In the end… when he saw how Dr. Feng slipped and almost fell to the ground, his body moved faster than his brain and he finally held the man in his arms for the first time. But oh he could not bring himself to be happy at all…
"Why… did you say that I don't want to see you?" Dr. Feng's voice broke his trance and he raised his head to find the man frowning at him.
There were still traces of drunkenness on his features, causing the corner of his eyes to be tinged faintly with red. It made him look… softer, more approachable. More beautiful. He was heart-achingly beautiful. He had always been. But right now, this kind of him made Luan want to reach out and touch him to see if he could smear that alluring crimson hue on his cheeks too…
Luan took a few steps backward to put some distance between them and rid himself of the messy thoughts. The corner of his lips curved into a smile that did not reach his eyes. "Isn't that the case?"
That answer was so unexpected that Dr. Feng responded with a frown. "You…" he pressed on his aching temple. He did not remember ever saying anything to Luan about this. "Just what kind of nonsense are you talking about…?"
