The Way He Did

Dr. Feng hastily went to check up on Lu Yizhou and Zachary, hoping to see that they were at least having a good rest… but no. These two little brats, one was half crippled and the other paralyzed from the waist down due to the coma, dared to have sex in such a condition and worse, that bastard Lu Yizhou did not think that anything was wrong with that!0

As much as Dr. Feng was happy for them, he could not help but feel exasperated as well. Why the hell couldn't they wait until they recovered? It had not even been twenty four hours since Zachary regained consciousness, for God's sake! Or was it how it meant to truly be in love? The urgency to be entwined with each other, the rush, the longing, the unwillingness to wait even for one more second…

Dr. Feng did not understand, and he felt like he wouldn't either. Ever.

He was too rational to be ruled by emotions.

But wasn't it how he viewed Lu Yizhou and Zachary in the first place too? Especially Lu Yizhou. Dr. Feng had never pegged him for such an eager and anxious lover. Okay, he had no idea how Lu Yizhou was before he met Zachary, but he could tell from their everyday interaction that he was a reclusive and detached man. Yet in front of Zachary, it was as if all those emotions buried in the depth of his heart had finally found a long lost floodgate. They surged out of him in powerful waves – in the way his eyes softened, in the way the corner of his lips curved, in the way he tenderly took the other man into his arms – it was so mushy that Dr. Feng got goosebumps all over his body.

And in exchange, Zachary, who was basking in the love, seemed to glow and shine in a way that made him so blissful. He looked like a different man compared to three months ago, as if he had been born anew.

Dr. Feng watched over them from the sidelines, sighing. A relieved smile graced the corner of his lips.

Well, whatever. As long as the two of them are happy… then all is good.

(Even though he could not resist nagging them a little more.)

***

"They are so sappy, can you believe it?" Dr. Feng chuckled as his fingers smoothly flew across the hologram keyboard. "I heard that they have been married a few times inside the simulator, and God… they are going to hold another wedding ceremony in the future!"

Dr. Feng had stayed with them until evening and made sure that both of them had settled well, and only then did he return to the institute to continue his work. Even though their building had half collapsed, it did not mean that they could take a few days off. The fates of hundreds and thousands of people lay in their hands. As the Head Administrator, Dr. Feng had to oversee this process and ensured that no error would occur. Fortunately, Luan had been such a great help. He had organized all of the files sent to him into a few categories depending on their urgency. And it helped. A lot. Having a capable assistant was such a bliss, especially if this assistant was one whom he had built with his own hands.

"Hmm," Luan's eyes were extremely soft as he gazed at the smile on Dr. Feng's lips. "I attended both of their weddings."

"Really?" He raised his head in surprise. Then without thinking, he added, "Was Cyrus there as well?"

Instantly, the air between them froze.

Dr. Feng got a shock himself. Did he just ask… oh shit. It was not his intention to bring up Cyrus – at all. He had just been too happy with Lu Yizhou and Zachary's news that he let it slip out. Perhaps it was some sort of mutual understanding, they had never mentioned Cyrus since… well, since he found out about their intimate relationship which ended up in Luan coming clean to him. It was as if just the mere mention of Cyrus' name was enough to choke them, similar to the feeling of having a fish bone stuck on their throat.

Dr. Feng's feelings toward Cyrus were complicated – too complicated to be put into words. He created Cyrus solely for Zachary's sake because he was afraid that something would go wrong with him inside the simulator, and the blooming relationship between Cyrus and Luan was something that he had not foreseen. And if he were asked to comment about this relationship… he did not know what to say either.

Luan told him that the person he had always loved was him, but Dr. Feng was not certain. It was not like he doubted Luan's feelings – well, he did. A little. After all, the one who had spent so much time with Luan in the simulator was Cyrus, no?

As for him… all he had was the label of 'creator'. He was often buried in his work, neglected Luan all day long and only remembered to talk to him when he was on break. How to say it? He… really had no idea what Luan was seeing in him.

At least with Cyrus, Luan could definitely become a priority, he could be loved, cherished and adored – he had seen it in the way Cyrus looked at Luan. Those eyes overflowing with love and affection was exactly the same as how Lu Yizhou was looking at Zachary.

As for him… he would never be able to make Luan his priority. For starters, his work would always demand most of his time, effort and attention. On top of that, he had his future projects and aspirations as well. After the grand success with the simulator, he had a few ideas he'd very much like to try. It was expected that he would be more busy in the future.

He could not make Luan his priority – even if there was love between them.

He would never be able to love Luan the way Cyrus did…

Even then, could Luan still declare with all confidence that the person he loved was him?

Wouldn't it be better if he were to… be together with Cyrus instead? Alas, Dr. Feng knew that saying something like that would make Luan feel horrible. As such, he pressed his lips together and said nothing.

The heavy silence was broken by Luan's voice. "I…" he sounded choked. "Yeah, I was with him… at that time."

Dr. Feng lowered his lashes, lost in thought. Actually, he was not the kind of person who liked to let a problem ferment for long. He'd rather seek a solution and work on it, no matter how long it would take him. And he already made two exceptions, both for Cyrus and Luan.

Perhaps it was because he had seen how beautiful and pure the love between Lu Yizhou and Zachary was, all of a sudden… he did not want to bury his head like an ostrich anymore.

They had to work on this somehow. Rather than stewing in uncertainty until an indefinite time in the future, wouldn't it be better to solve it once and for all?

Thinking up here, Dr. Feng closed the document he was working on and turned to Luan, his expression serious. "Luan, I… have something I'd like to talk to you about," he chose his words carefully. "Can you lend me an ear?"
