When she remembered Mark's answer to her question. She frowned slightly. 'It's fine as long as he said, "No, I don't know them". But why did he try to explain it to me? It was almost like he tried to hide something. He didn't seem to be lying but his answer was definitely fishy.'

'If he wasn't guilty there was no point in explaining. Why would it matter to him? But he went all the way to describe how they talked and got to know each other and then left the ship. What is he trying to cover up?'

'Should I ask Xiao Lan about that? But she seems to know them. I can't even remember the face of the man who was walking with her to the virgin road. If she knows them, she may tell me or may not tell me. I can't even force her. Maybe I'll try to hypnotize her. It can work.'

Xue Lin decided on her own.

Her eyes turned to the turned-off laptop.

'I should pack my bag,' she thought.

When Ge Chen woke up, it was evening. He yawned and stretched his arms. He looked around and scanned the room he was in.

The room was dark and cold. He turned off the air conditioner and got up from the bed. After taking a bath, he dressed up and came back to the bedroom.

He turned on the light. The room suddenly brightened up.

That's when he noticed something was missing.

Xue Lin's luggage wasn't there. None of her clothes were in this room.

"Lin?" he called and looked around. He searched everywhere but she was neither on the balcony nor the room.

He rushed outside the room and searched for her on the deck.

On the way, he collided with Lu Feng.

Lu Feng was stunned seeing him so disheveled. "Hey, what's wrong? Where are you going like this?"

"My wife," Ge Chen stated. He seemed restless. "Did you see her?"

Ge Chen confirmed, "Yes, I did. She packed her bag and used Mu Feng's helicopter to go somewhere. I don't know the details…"

Before he could finish, Ge Chen was gone.

He mumbled, "How come Mr. Knows-it-all doesn't know where his wife went?"

Meanwhile, Ge Chen opened Mu Feng's temporary office door with a loud bang, only to find out a black muzzle was pointed at him.

"God! You scared me!" Mu Feng put down his gun.

He was used to enemy ambushes. So, he always kept his gun with him and never let his guard down.

"Where did you send my wife?" Ge Chen directly went to business.

Mu Feng was stunned. "Send your wife? Didn't she tell you? She wanted to go to Germany. She asked for my help and so I let her borrow my helicopter. I thought you knew."

His eyes grew bigger when he had a sudden realization. "Don't tell me she threw you a divorce paper and ran away?"

"…" Ge Chen's cold gaze swept over his friend.

Mu Feng raised his hands. "All right. My mistake. I shouldn't have joked about this. Here, take this." He threw a white envelope at his friend.

Ge Chen caught it. On the envelope, his name was written on it. The sender was none other than his wife.

Mu Feng kept blabbering, "Your wife sure is backdated. I mean who writes letters these days. When I asked her about this, she said that she couldn't tell you beforehand since it was urgent. Leaving a text or a short note would be too informal. She wanted to be sincere to you by writing the letter. I don't know what her brain tells her. To me, it looks more like a letter to a boss than a letter to a husband. Why do you guys have such a formal relationship?"

Ge Chen coolly replied, "She wants some space and I'm giving her that. Any problem?"

Mu Feng approved his decision. "Not at all. You did the right thing. If you disobeyed her, she would have hypnotized you and you would have become a living robot."

Ge Chen sat on the couch and unfolded the letter. It said –

I didn't want to wake you up knowing how tired you were. So, I'm leaving without a word.

I just got my approval letter and I'm going to Germany to complete my study.

It might take a while to finish my study. I'll keep in touch. If you wish, you can visit me here.

After I finish my study, I'll go back to China.

"What did she write?" Mu Feng asked.

He was curious to know what the terrifying woman could write to give an excuse to his scary friend.

Ge Chen replied while folding the letter, "…She went to finish her study."

Mu Feng placed a hand under his chin and mumbled, "She is a sucker for study, isn't she? I wonder why she wants to hurry so much."

He remembered something from the past. "I saw her in the campus and Italy. She would read books every day. One day, she asked me to give her the records of the top criminals who we dealt with. She was very curious about those criminals' profiles. Look, I know I shouldn't say this but I deal with criminals, you know. You should keep an eye on your wife. She might do something dangerous. My instinct is always right."

"If I do that, she will feel suffocated and will avoid me forever." Ge Chen stood up. "She might be reasonable and understanding but if something threatens her freedom, she will take it very seriously. The last thing I want is for her to think I'm her enemy."

Mu Feng pondered about her situation. He couldn't help but share his opinion. "She is very wary of you, isn't she? I wonder if something happened to her in the past. Didn't you check her background?"

Ge Chen shortly explained, "I did. She had a hard time in her family. Everyone opposed her and mentally and physically abused her."

"Hmm, it can be the case. Maybe she thinks you will hit her. Maybe she thinks all human beings are bad," Mu Feng expressed his thoughts about her.

"She is a good womanizer," Ge Chen bitterly disclosed.

"*Nani?!" Mu Feng looked like his eyes were going to pop out of the sockets.

"She was a host back in her school days."

Mu Feng was still confused. "Did I hear right? Host, not a hostess?"

"Host. She accompanied women and the women would fall for her. Even Louis lost to her." Ge Chen then told him the whole story.

"…I can't believe Louis would fail to beat a brat-like woman. She is all tiny and thin. Moreover, she… I can't believe this." Mu Feng knew his friend would never lie about this but it was unbelievable.

Mu Feng and Louis were good partners back in high school. They would hang out with women all the time. He knew how capable Louis was.

How could a woman who looked like a middle schooler outsmart the handsome playboy Louis?

Ge Chen asked, "Do you still believe she had anything to do with women? I think it's only men she is wary of."

"So, family abuse isn't the reason, you mean?" Mu Feng rubbed his chin. "Hey, can it be that her heart was broken by a man?"

Ge Chen glared at his friend.

Mu Feng calmly said, "I know you are upset but it can be the only reason. That's why she doesn't want to fall in love easily and is taking her time to get to know you. Since you are all rich and powerful, she thinks you will dump her one day and go out with another woman."2

Ge Chen was deep in thought.

'Why didn't I consider that before?' he wondered. 'Our relationship is already bound in a contract. She might think I won't be faithful to her. Or maybe, she thinks she doesn't need to put her heart in this uncertain relationship.'

He looked up and questioned his friend, "How long are you going to stay here?"

"For a week. Why?"

"I'll stay with you for a week," Ge Chen declared.

Mu Feng was genuinely happy. "That's great. What is your plan for your wife?"

"I'll meet her soon in Germany." Ge Chen inwardly thought, 'She needs some break from this contractual relationship and I'll give her that.'

"Since we will be together for a while, why don't we work on the submarine that we lost?" Mu Feng showed an evil smile.

Xue Lin reached her home in the evening. She unlocked the door and went inside.

She felt a layer of dust under her feet. She turned on the light and saw the familiar place, her true home.

She felt at ease in this place.

In Ge Chen's house, no matter how big it was, it was still not her house. Moreover, there were always people walking and working. She didn't feel comfortable.

In her house, she could do anything, wear anything, eat anything, without anyone telling her what to do.

So quiet and so peaceful.

She cleaned the home and took a bath. After she was done bathing, she went to the kitchen.

She hurriedly left for China. So, there was still food in the fridge. She cooked lemon butter prawns with rice.

While she was eating, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen and paused.
