In the mirror, I saw Will pulling the sheets off his bed, and I turned around. “What are you doing? We have to go!”

Will looked at me and then down to the sheets.

He shrugged his shoulders. “Yeah. I mean, I knew I could wash these, but I wasn’t sure, so I thought it would be better to just throw them out and put new sheets on.”

Will shook his head quickly. “No. We can’t, Lex. Come on. Help me with these, so I can get you home.”

I helped Will put the new sheets on. He balled up the old ones and carried them down into the kitchen. He pulled out a garbage bag and placed the sheets in it.

Then, he put it in the trash compactor. “I’ll take this out now.”

I sat down at the kitchen island and texted Colt.

Me: Where are you?
