Beyond Evolution is Perfection

Peggy is an emotional wreck. News of Steve's death had broken her and despite Howard's effort of consoling her... She didn't respond.

But Peggy was a strong woman. Despite being emotionally unstable, she didn't let it show on her face during meetings. She was still the  'Margaret Peggy Carter' that everyone respected.

But when she was within her inner circle, she was just a woman with a broken heart.

"Peggy, you know that you can't mourn forever... You have to move on. There are countless men who like you." 

Now I know where Tony got his insensitivity from.

Howard looks towards me. "Isn't that right Marcellus?"

I sighed. "Miss. Carter, you are a strong woman. Despite everything that you had gone through, you didn't break down. And for that, I respect. But what Howard said is also true. You... have to let him go at some point." 

She is not a fan of mine but I don't like spewing lies for unnecessary things. I lie only when I know that the lie will benefit me.

"Besides we need you for this initiative. And despite you working with us, I know that your focus is not on the project. You are a talented woman… one of the smartest I have met. You cannot break down that easily." I don't want anything to go wrong with this project… Especially when there is a chance of a Hydra invasion.

True. She might not show her feelings but the mistakes she was making during the projects were more than enough to tell us about her mental state.

She didn't reply but instead stood up. "I am going out for fresh air." With that she went out of the room.

*Sigh*

"You think she is going to be okay?" Howard asked me and honestly… I wasn't sure. 

"Give her some time." I took a sip from the cup of coffee… I need the caffeine.

Howard clicked his tongue. "And we just started our project." 

Yeah. He was Tony's father alright. 

"Don't worry, we will restart our project from next week." I need time to gather strength, not to waste it in consoling a heartbroken woman. "Besides, how is your project going?" 

His face instantly turned bright. "Great! I am nearly done with the missiles and once I implement the additions you suggested. It will be perfect."

I chuckled at his antics. "I need to go and check on the current project." I got off my seat. "I will see you later."

We needed a headquarter for 'S.H.I.E.L.D' and yeah, the name was finalized. And since we didn't have the iconic Tri-Carrier, it was decided that the 'first' base would be made underwater.

Me and Howard were in charge of the build as Peggy was not in her best state. And I am pretty sure that neither the government nor Peggy would have agreed to the secret installments we made in the base.

Surprisingly it was Howard's idea to implant special trackers to check the functioning of the base. Which makes me question… How did 'Hydra' infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D in the first place?

Howard was a technical genius and with the supervision of Peggy, it shouldn't have been possible.

But then I realized…

The higher ranked officials were from Hydra. *Sigh* Too many issues to deal with. 

Speaking of Hydra… I will have to deal with the Monolith at some point.

[Unknown Location]

Arcnen Lennon was not happy. He was definitely not happy with the current authority. 

He and his team were ordered to make an upgraded version of the 'Super-Soldier Serum.' But how were they going to do that when they didn't even have the base formula?

"If not for Mr. Essex, I wouldn't have even hoped for success." He was ecstatic looking at the blood sample in front of him. "With this… we might just succeed." 

*Knock* *Knock* 

"Come in." He said, not even bothering to look towards the door. 

A blonde-haired woman in a lab coat walked in. 

"Sir, you have a letter."

Arcnen raised an eyebrow. 'Who would send me a letter?'

"Was the sender's name on it?" He asked to which his assistant nodded.

"It is from someone called… 'The Jester'."

[Unknown Location]

"Things are going to get interesting from now on. But how on earth does a mutant know about the 'Golden Serum' project?" He looked at the photo in front of him. "You are truly interesting, Marcellus Hanley."

Essex had found a new test subject to work with.

[1 month later]

Howard and my projects were coming along perfectly while Peggy seemed to have also gotten back to her original self… 'just a little.'

McDonald's had established itself within most of the American states as the war had ended quite a while back and the industries were chaotic. Taking the chance, they had established themselves in most of the regions.

I got a message from Victor that he had smelled James in Kenya, and they were chasing him like a wild goose.

If they keep it up, they will be able to catch him before the deadline.

"But I will think about it later. I have books to go through." I mumbled looking at the large stack of books in front of me.

"I never knew that you were interested in genetics." Turning around, I find Peggy standing near the doorway with a smile.

"It is one of the many things that I like. And I find it quite fascinating." This made her tilt her head.

"Fascinating?" 

"Indeed. 'Fascinating.' Don't you find the theory of evolution to be fascinating? The fact that we, 'Humans' who are said to be the most advanced species, evolved from apes. The species who don't even know about clothes and modesty." I smiled at her expression. "Interesting isn't it."

"It is."

"Humans started off as weak beings who were hunted by almost every other being… yet they evolved and became apex predators themselves." I sighed. "Physically, we might not be the strongest... but we are smarter than the rest."

Peggy leans on the wall. "So, what do you think is beyond our current evolution?"2

"Immortality, Invulnerability, and Godhood. In simple terms… perfection." 

Peggy's eyes widen. "Immortality is not possible."

"Maybe not now, but in the future… Who knows?"

I know. Because I will obtain it.
